    Evacuation Guidance Design: An Experimental Study Based on Eye Tracking Devices

    It is a crucial issue whether evacuees follow the evacuation guidance during evacuation. Good evacuation guidance is necessary to be designed to help the evacuees follow the guidance. In this paper, evacuation experiments based on wearable eye tracking devices were carried out to study the design effect of the evacuation guidance. Three factors were considered in these experiments: 1) the position of the evacuation guidance; 2) follow guidance or follow other evacuees; 3) follow a stranger or a familiar person. The results show that more participants noticed the guidance with low position and ground position than the guidance with up position. The evacuees intend to follow others rather than to follow the guidance, i.e. most evacuees act as “follower”. Eye tracking evacuation experiments can also be used to test the effectiveness of evacuation guidance signs

    Application of Virtual Reality in the study of Human Behavior in Fire : Pursuing realistic behavior in evacuation experiments

    Virtual Reality (VR) experiments are used to study human behavior in fire because they allow simulation of fire events with relatively low risks to the participants, while maintaining high levels of experimental control. Manystudies have used VR experiments to explore aspects of the human response to fire threats, but VR experiments as a research method are yet to be subjected to a systematic process of validation. One way to validate VR experiments is to compare VR data to data obtained using other research methods, e.g., case studies, laboratory experiments, and field experiments. Five independent VR experiments were designed to collect data that could be then compared to data collected using other research methods. Both datasets, VR and physical, are thencompared with each other to assess similarities and differences between them. Results show that participants in the VR experiments often acted like people did in the physical-world events. Moreover, Human Behavior in Fire theories that explain the behavior of victims in real fires were found to also explain the participants’ behavior in the VR experiments. There were differences between VR and physical-world samples, which highlighted limitations of VR experiments or aspects about realism that need to be considered when designing VR experiments. Visual realism is not enough for participants to interpret a virtual fire emergency as a threat. Therefore, VR experiments need to induce participants to take the virtual fire event seriously. Social norms that apply in physical world contexts may not emerge naturally in virtual environments, and measures should be taken to enhance behavioral realism in VR. These findings are a meaningful contribution to the development of the VR experiment method for collection of behavioral data

    The research community relies upon biorepositories’ ability to prepare for the scientific advancement that can precipitate the discoveries of the future. Furthermore, as the complexities, financial pressure, and quality issues biorepositories face continue to unfold, it is imperative to explore unmet needs researchers may have for biorepository services as well as evaluate the commercial potential, funding, and competitiveness of a new biorepository. With the goal of contributing to medical and scientific research and the biorepository field, this paper utilizes principles from ISO 9001:2008 “Quality management systems- Requirements” to outline and explore the challenges in establishing a state-of-the-science, accredited, commercial BSL-2 biorepository in order to support academic, clinical, and translational research. In addition, this paper provides detailed quality assurance strategies to meet investigator’s needs, ensure high quality, fit-for-purpose biospecimens, and, most importantly, protect and preserve the biospecimens entrusted to its care

    Exploring the Effectiveness of Transit Security Awareness Campaigns in the San Francisco Bay Area, Research Report 09-19

    Public involvement in alerting officials of suspicious and potentially harmful activity is critical to the overall security of a transit system. As part of an effort to get passengers and the public involved, many transit agencies have security awareness campaigns. The objective of this research is to learn how transit agencies seek to make security awareness campaigns effective and explore how they measure the effectiveness of such campaigns, if at all. This research project includes data from case studies of five major agencies that provide transit service in the San Francisco Bay Area region. The case study data are comprised of descriptions of the types of security awareness campaigns the agencies have implemented, the goals of the campaigns, and how they seek to make their campaigns effective, as well as whether and how these agencies measure and determine the effectiveness of their campaigns. A positive finding of this research is the consistency with which Bay Area transit organizations address the need for passenger awareness as part of their overall security program. However, none of the five agencies analyzed for this study measures the effectiveness of their campaigns. Whereas they all have a similar goal—to increase passenger awareness about security issues—little evidence exists confirming to what extent they are achieving this goal. The paper concludes with suggestions for using outcome measurements to provide a reasonable indication of a campaign’s effectiveness by capturing the public’s response to a campaign

    Abstract: Terrorists likely have adopted vehicle ramming as a tactic because it can be carried out by an individual (or “lone wolf terrorist”), and because the skills required are minimal (e.g. the ability to drive a car and determine locations for creating maximum carnage). Studies of terrorist activities against transportation assets have been conducted to help law enforcement agencies prepare their communities, create mitigation measures, conduct effective surveillance and respond quickly to attacks. This study reviews current research on terrorist tactics against transportation assets, with an emphasis on vehicle ramming attacks. It evaluates some of the current attack strategies, and the possible mitigation or response tactics that may be effective in deterring attacks or saving lives in the event of an attack. It includes case studies that can be used as educational tools for understanding terrorist methodologies, as well as ordinary emergencies that might become a terrorist’s blueprint

    Use of Augmented Reality in Human Wayfinding: A Systematic Review

    Augmented reality technology has emerged as a promising solution to assist with wayfinding difficulties, bridging the gap between obtaining navigational assistance and maintaining an awareness of one's real-world surroundings. This article presents a systematic review of research literature related to AR navigation technologies. An in-depth analysis of 65 salient studies was conducted, addressing four main research topics: 1) current state-of-the-art of AR navigational assistance technologies, 2) user experiences with these technologies, 3) the effect of AR on human wayfinding performance, and 4) impacts of AR on human navigational cognition. Notably, studies demonstrate that AR can decrease cognitive load and improve cognitive map development, in contrast to traditional guidance modalities. However, findings regarding wayfinding performance and user experience were mixed. Some studies suggest little impact of AR on improving outdoor navigational performance, and certain information modalities may be distracting and ineffective. This article discusses these nuances in detail, supporting the conclusion that AR holds great potential in enhancing wayfinding by providing enriched navigational cues, interactive experiences, and improved situational awareness.Comment: 52 page
