    Trojan Spoofing: A Threat to Critical Infrastructure

    This article explores the phenomenon of location spoofing – where the spoofer is able to ‘teleport’ systems in and out of defined locations, either for the purpose of infiltration into no-go zones or for the ‘teleportation’ out of real, defined zones in the physical world. The research relied on a qualitative methodology, utilising academic research findings, media reports, hacker demonstrations, and secondary data from these sources, to situate the spoofing threat in the context of international security. This conceptual, argumentative essay finds that signal spoofing, the methods of which can be followed via online scripts, allows users the ability to overcome geographically-defined territorial restrictions. This, as this article finds, allows violent actors to weaponise systems such as unmanned ariel systems (UAS), potentially leading to the escalation of political tensions in extreme but unfortunately ever-frequent episodes. The article concludes that, while Trojan Spoofing (in particular) poses a real and an existential threat to international security, it is only a sum-of-all parts in considering other threats to critical functions in society. If geofences are to be used as a single point of security to protect assets against hostile actors, managers need to be aware of the vulnerability of intrusion and the resulting geopolitical consequences.publishedVersio

    Game Theory Meets Network Security: A Tutorial at ACM CCS

    The increasingly pervasive connectivity of today's information systems brings up new challenges to security. Traditional security has accomplished a long way toward protecting well-defined goals such as confidentiality, integrity, availability, and authenticity. However, with the growing sophistication of the attacks and the complexity of the system, the protection using traditional methods could be cost-prohibitive. A new perspective and a new theoretical foundation are needed to understand security from a strategic and decision-making perspective. Game theory provides a natural framework to capture the adversarial and defensive interactions between an attacker and a defender. It provides a quantitative assessment of security, prediction of security outcomes, and a mechanism design tool that can enable security-by-design and reverse the attacker's advantage. This tutorial provides an overview of diverse methodologies from game theory that includes games of incomplete information, dynamic games, mechanism design theory to offer a modern theoretic underpinning of a science of cybersecurity. The tutorial will also discuss open problems and research challenges that the CCS community can address and contribute with an objective to build a multidisciplinary bridge between cybersecurity, economics, game and decision theory

These are Planets, solar systems, the great dark void (which fall into the purview of astronomers and astrophysics), and the Dreamer Region. The earth, from a measurement standpoint, is the baseline of Space. It is the purview of geographers, engineers, scientists, politicians, and romantics. Flying high above the earth are Satellites. Military and commercial organizations govern their purview. The lowest altitude at which air resistance is low enough to permit a single complete, unpowered orbit is approximately 80 miles (125 km) above the earth\u27s surface. Normal Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite launches range between 99 miles (160 km) to 155 miles (250 km). Satellites in higher orbits experience less drag and can remain in Space longer in service. Geosynchronous orbit is around 22,000 miles (35,000 km). However, orbits can be even higher. UASs (Drones) have a maximum altitude of about 33,000 ft (10 km) because rotating rotors become physically limiting. (Nichols R. et al., 2019) Recreational drones fly at or below 400 ft in controlled airspace (Class B, C, D, E) and are permitted with prior authorization by using a LAANC or DroneZone. Recreational drones are permitted to fly at or below 400 ft in Class G (uncontrolled) airspace. (FAA, 2022) However, between 400 ft and 33,000 ft is in the purview of DREAMERS. In the DREAMERS region, Space has its most interesting technological emergence. We see emerging technologies and operations that may have profound effects on humanity. This is the mission our book addresses. We look at the Dreamer Region from three perspectives:1) a Military view where intelligence, jamming, spoofing, advanced materials, and hypersonics are in play; 2) the Operational Dreamer Region; whichincludes Space-based platform vulnerabilities, trash, disaster recovery management, A.I., manufacturing, and extended reality; and 3) the Humanitarian Use of Space technologies; which includes precision agriculture wildlife tracking, fire risk zone identification, and improving the global food supply and cattle management. Here’s our book’s breakdown: SECTION 1 C4ISR and Emerging Space Technologies. C4ISR stands for Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance. Four chapters address the military: Current State of Space Operations; Satellite Killers and Hypersonic Drones; Space Electronic Warfare, Jamming, Spoofing, and ECD; and the challenges of Manufacturing in Space. SECTION 2: Space Challenges and Operations covers in five chapters a wide purview of challenges that result from operations in Space, such as Exploration of Key Infrastructure Vulnerabilities from Space-Based Platforms; Trash Collection and Tracking in Space; Leveraging Space for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management; Bio-threats to Agriculture and Solutions From Space; and rounding out the lineup is a chapter on Modelling, Simulation, and Extended Reality. SECTION 3: Humanitarian Use of Space Technologies is our DREAMERS section.     Development of an Electronic Warfare Package

    Nowadays with the development and cost reduction of unmanned vehicles, armed forces around the world have been using these systems as a replacement or complement for conventional manned systems. Because of all the advantages inherent to the use of these vehicles, there have been many possible applications for these systems. One of possible applications is its use as a vehicle for carrying an Electronic Warfare package. Electronic Warfare, since the military started using and depending on the electromagnetic spectrum to achieve their objectives, has been a major warfare area of high interest. In my thesis, I suggest the creation of an Electronic Warfare package with jamming and spoofing capacities for communication systems, designed to be implemented on an unmanned vehicle, with remote control dedicated programs. To do this, I took advantage of the Software Defined Radio technology along with the GNU Radio software, installed on a Raspberry Pi computer in order to be transportable even by small vehicles.Atualmente, com o desenvolvimento e a redução de custos dos veículos não tripulados, as forças armadas em todo o mundo têm utilizado estes sistemas como substituto ou complemento aos sistemas tripulados. Devido às vantagens inerentes à sua utilização, têm havido inúmeras aplicações para estes sistemas. Uma das possíveis aplicações é a sua utilização como veículo para transporte de um pacote de Guerra Eletrónica. A Guerra Eletrónica, desde que os militares começaram a utilizar e a depender do espetro eletromagnético para alcançar os seus objetivos, tem sido uma das principais áreas da guerra de elevado interesse. Nesta dissertação, sugiro a criação de um módulo de Guerra Eletrónica com a capacidade de efetuar empastelamento e mistificação de a sistemas de comunicações, idealizado para ser implementado num veículo não tripulado, com programas dedicados para controlo remoto. Para isto, recorri à tecnologia do Radio Definido por Software assim como ao software GNU Radio, instalado num computador Raspberry Pi por forma a poder ser transportado também por pequenos veículos
