SAgric-IoT: an IoT-based platform and deep learning for greenhouse monitoring
The Internet of Things (IoT) and convolutional neural networks (CNN) integration is a growing topic of interest for researchers as a technology that will contribute to transforming agriculture. IoT will enable farmers to decide and act based on data collected from sensor nodes regarding field conditions and not purely based on experience, thus minimizing the wastage of supplies (seeds, water, pesticide, and fumigants). On the other hand, CNN complements monitoring systems with tasks such as the early detection of crop diseases or predicting the number of consumable resources and supplies (water, fertilizers) needed to increase productivity. This paper proposes SAgric-IoT, a technology platform based on IoT and CNN for precision agriculture, to monitor environmental and physical variables and provide early disease detection while automatically controlling the irrigation and fertilization in greenhouses. The results show SAgric-IoT is a reliable IoT platform with a low packet loss level that considerably reduces energy consumption and has a disease identification detection accuracy and classification process of over 90%
Connectivity Analysis in Vehicular Ad-hoc Network based on VDTN
In the last decade, user demand has been increasing exponentially based on modern communication systems. One of these new technologies is known as mobile ad-hoc networking (MANET). One part of MANET is called a vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET). It has different types such as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicular delay-tolerant networks, and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I). To provide sufficient quality of communication service in the Vehicular Delay-Tolerant Network (VDTN), it is important to present a comprehensive survey that shows the challenges and limitations of VANET. In this paper, we focus on one type of VANET, which is known as VDTNs. To investigate realistic communication systems based on VANET, we considered intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) and the possibility of replacing the roadside unit with VDTN. Many factors can affect the message propagation delay. When road-side units (RSUs) are present, which leads to an increase in the message delivery efficiency since RSUs can collaborate with vehicles on the road to increase the throughput of the network, we propose new methods based on environment and vehicle traffic and present a comprehensive evaluation of the newly suggested VDTN routing method. Furthermore, challenges and prospects are presented to stimulate interest in the scientific community
Reliable Data Transmission in Challenging Vehicular Network using Delay Tolerant Network
In the 21st century, there has been an increasing tendency toward the wide adoption of wireless networks and technologies due to their significant advantages such as flexibility, mobility, accessibility, and low cost. Wireless technologies have therefore become essential factors in the improvement of intra-vehicle road safety in Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET), which potentially reduce road traffic accidents by enabling efficient exchange of information between vehicles in the early stages. However, due to the inherent high mobility and rapid change of topology, there are numerous challenges in VANET. Hence, different software packages have been combined in this project to create the VANET environment, whereby the Objective Modular Network Testbed (OMNeT++) and the Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO), along with Vehicles in Network Simulation (VEINS) are integrated to model the VANET environment.
Also, Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) are implemented in the Opportunistic Network Environment (ONE) simulator, where the Store-Carry-Forward technique is used to route traffic. When network resources are not limited, a high delivery ratio is possible. However, when network resources are scarce, these protocols will have a low delivery ratio and high overhead. Due to these limitations, in this research, an extensive performance evaluation of various routing protocols for DTN with different buffer management policies, giving insight into the impact of these policies on DTN routing protocol performance has been conducted. The empirical study gave insight into the strengths and limitations of the existing protocols thus enabling the selection of the benchmark protocols utilized in evaluating a new Enhanced Message Replication Technique (EMRT) proposed in this thesis.
The main contribution of this thesis is the design, implementation, and evaluation of a novel EMRT that dynamically adjusts the number of message replicas based on a node's ability to quickly disseminate the message and maximize the delivery ratio. EMRT is evaluated using three different quota protocols: Spray&Wait, Encounter Based Routing (EBR), and Destination Based Routing Protocol (DBRP). Simulation results show that applying EMRT to these protocols improves the delivery ratio while reducing overhead ratio and latency average. For example, when combined with Spray&Wait, EBR, and DBRP, the delivery probability is improved by 13%, 8%, and 10%, respectively, while the latency average is reduced by 51%, 14%, and 13%, respectively
BEST-Blockchain-Enabled Secure and Trusted Public Emergency Services for Smart Cities Environment
[EN] In the last few years, the Internet of things (IoT) has recently gained attention in developing various smart city applications such as smart healthcare, smart supply chain, smart home, smart grid, etc. The existing literature focuses on the smart healthcare system as a public emergency service (PES) to provide timely treatment to the patient. However, little attention is given to a distributed smart fire brigade system as a PES to protect human life and properties from severe fire damage. The traditional PES are developed on a centralised system, which requires high computation and does not ensure timely service fulfilment. Furthermore, these traditional PESs suffer from a lack of trust, transparency, data integrity, and a single point of failure issue. In this context, this paper proposes a Blockchain-Enabled Secure and Trusted (BEST) framework for PES in the smart city environment. The BEST framework focuses on providing a fire brigade service as a PES to the smart home based on IoT device information to protect it from serious fire damage. Further, we used two edge computing servers, an IoT controller and a service controller. The IoT and service controller are used for local storage and to enhance the data processing speed of PES requests and PES fulfilments, respectively. The IoT controller manages an access control list to keep track of registered IoT gateways and their IoT devices, avoiding misguiding the PES department. The service controller utilised the queue model to handle the PES requests based on the minimum service queue length. Further, various smart contracts are designed on the Hyperledger Fabric platform to automatically call a PES either in the presence or absence of the smart-home owner under uncertain environmental conditions. The performance evaluation of the proposed BEST framework indicates the benefits of utilising the distributed environment and the smart contract logic. The various simulation results are evaluated in terms of service queue length, utilisation, actual arrival time, expected arrival time, number of PES departments, number of PES providers, and end-to-end delay. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-Enabled Wireless Communications and Networking
The emerging massive density of human-held and machine-type nodes implies larger traffic deviatiolns in the future than we are facing today. In the future, the network will be characterized by a high degree of flexibility, allowing it to adapt smoothly, autonomously, and efficiently to the quickly changing traffic demands both in time and space. This flexibility cannot be achieved when the network’s infrastructure remains static. To this end, the topic of UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) have enabled wireless communications, and networking has received increased attention. As mentioned above, the network must serve a massive density of nodes that can be either human-held (user devices) or machine-type nodes (sensors). If we wish to properly serve these nodes and optimize their data, a proper wireless connection is fundamental. This can be achieved by using UAV-enabled communication and networks. This Special Issue addresses the many existing issues that still exist to allow UAV-enabled wireless communications and networking to be properly rolled out
Comunicações veiculares híbridas
Vehicle Communications is a promising research field, with a great potential for
the development of new applications capable of improving road safety, traffic efficiency,
as well as passenger comfort and infotainment. Vehicle communication
technologies can be short-range, such as ETSI ITS-G5 or the 5G PC5 sidelink
channel, or long-range, using the cellular network (LTE or 5G). However, none of
the technologies alone can support the expected variety of applications for a large
number of vehicles, nor all the temporal and spatial requirements of connected
and autonomous vehicles. Thus, it is proposed the collaborative or hybrid use of
short-range communications, with lower latency, and of long-range technologies,
potentially with higher latency, but integrating aggregated data of wider geographic
scope.
In this context, this work presents a hybrid vehicle communications model, capable
of providing connectivity through two Radio Access Technologies (RAT), namely,
ETSI ITS-G5 and LTE, to increase the probability of message delivery and, consequently,
achieving a more robust, efficient and secure vehicle communication
system. The implementation of short-range communication channels is done using
Raw Packet Sockets, while the cellular connection is established using the Advanced
Messaging Queuing Protocol (AMQP) protocol.
The main contribution of this dissertation focuses on the design, implementation
and evaluation of a Hybrid Routing Sublayer, capable of isolating messages that
are formed/decoded from transmission/reception processes. This layer is, therefore,
capable of managing traffic coming/destined to the application layer of intelligent
transport systems (ITS), adapting and passing ITS messages between the highest
layers of the protocol stack and the available radio access technologies.
The Hybrid Routing Sublayer also reduces the financial costs due to the use of
cellular communications and increases the efficiency of the use of the available
electromagnetic spectrum, by introducing a cellular link controller using a Beacon
Detector, which takes informed decisions related to the need to connect to a cellular
network, according to different scenarios.
The experimental results prove that hybrid vehicular communications meet the requirements
of cooperative intelligent transport systems, by taking advantage of
the benefits of both communication technologies. When evaluated independently,
the ITS-G5 technology has obvious advantages in terms of latency over the LTE
technology, while the LTE technology performs better than ITS-G5, in terms of
throughput and reliability.As Comunicações Veiculares são um campo de pesquisa promissor, com um grande
potencial de desenvolvimento de novas aplicações capazes de melhorar a segurança
nas estradas, a eficiência do tráfego, bem com o conforto e entretenimento dos
passageiros. As tecnologias de comunicação veícular podem ser de curto alcance,
como por exemplo ETSI ITS-G5 ou o canal PC5 do 5G, ou de longo alcance, recorrendo
à rede celular (LTE ou 5G). No entanto, nenhuma das tecnologias por
si só, consegue suportar a variedade expectável de aplicações para um número de
veículos elevado nem tampouco todos os requisitos temporais e espaciais dos veículos
conectados e autónomos. Assim, é proposto o uso colaborativo ou híbrido de
comunicações de curto alcance, com latências menores, e de tecnologias de longo
alcance, potencialmente com maiores latências, mas integrando dados agregados
de maior abrangência geográfica.
Neste contexto, este trabalho apresenta um modelo de comunicações veiculares
híbrido, capaz de fornecer conectividade por meio de duas Tecnologias de Acesso
por Rádio (RAT), a saber, ETSI ITS-G5 e LTE, para aumentar a probabilidade de
entrega de mensagens e, consequentemente, alcançar um sistema de comunicação
veicular mais robusto, eficiente e seguro. A implementação de canais de comunicação
de curto alcance é feita usando Raw Packet Sockets, enquanto que a ligação
celular é estabelecida usando o protocolo Advanced Messaging Queuing Protocol
(AMQP).
A contribuição principal desta dissertação foca-se no projeto, implementação e avaliação
de uma sub camada hibrída de encaminhamento, capaz de isolar mensagens
que se formam/descodificam a partir de processos de transmissão/receção. Esta
camadada é, portanto, capaz de gerir o tráfego proveniente/destinado à camada
de aplicação de sistemas inteligentes de transportes (ITS) adaptando e passando
mensagens ITS entre as camadas mais altas da pilha protocolar e as tecnologias
de acesso rádio disponíveis.
A sub camada hibrída de encaminhamento também potencia uma redução dos custos
financeiros devidos ao uso de comunicações celulares e aumenta a eficiência do
uso do espectro electromagnético disponível, ao introduzir um múdulo controlador
da ligação celular, utilizando um Beacon Detector, que toma decisões informadas
relacionadas com a necessidade de uma conexão a uma rede celular, de acordo com
diferentes cenários.
Os resultados experimentais comprovam que as comunicações veículares híbridas
cumprem os requisitos dos sistemas cooperativos de transporte inteligentes, ao
tirarem partido das vantagens de ambas tecnologias de comunicação. Quando
avaliadas de forma independente, constata-se que que a tecnologia ITS-G5 tem
vantagens evidentes em termos de latência sobre a tecnologia LTE, enquanto que

Feudalistic Platooning: Subdivide Platoons, Unite Networks, and Conquer Efficiency and Reliability
Cooperative intelligent transportation systems (C-ITSs) such as platooning rely on a robust and timely network that may not always be available in sufficient quality. Out of the box hybrid networks only partly eliminate shortcomings: mutual interference avoidance, data load balancing, and data dissemination must be sophisticated. Lacking network quality may lead to safety bottlenecks that require that the distance between the following vehicles be increased. However, increasing gaps result in efficiency loss and additionally compromise safety as the platoon is split into smaller parts by traffic: maneuvers, e.g., cut-in maneuvers bear safety risks, and consequently lower efficiency even further. However, platoons, especially if they are very long, can negatively affect the flow of traffic. This mainly applies on entry or exit lanes, on narrow lanes, or in intersection areas: automated and non-automated vehicles in traffic do affect each other and are interdependent. To account for varying network quality and enable the coexistence of non-automated and platooned traffic, we present in this paper a new concept of platooning that unites ad hoc—in form of IEEE 802.11p—and cellular communication: feudalistic platooning. Platooned vehicles are divided into smaller groups, inseparable by surrounding traffic, and are assigned roles that determine the communication flow between vehicles, other groups and platoons, and infrastructure. Critical vehicle data are redundantly sent while the ad hoc network is only used for this purpose. The remaining data are sent—relying on cellular infrastructure once it is available—directly between vehicles with or without the use of network involvement for scheduling. The presented approach was tested in simulations using Omnet++ and Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO)
Robust distributed resource allocation for cellular vehicle-to-vehicle communication
Mit Release 14 des LTE Standards unterstützt dieser die direkte Fahrzeug-zu-Fahrzeug-Kommunikation über den Sidelink. Diese Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit dem Scheduling Modus 4, einem verteilten MAC-Protokoll ohne Involvierung der Basisstation, das auf periodischer Wiederverwendung von Funkressourcen aufbaut. Der Stand der Technik und eine eigene Analyse des Protokolls decken verschiedene Probleme auf. So wiederholen sich Kollisionen von Paketen, wodurch manche Fahrzeuge für längere Zeit keine sicherheitskritischen Informationen verbreiten können. Kollisionen entstehen vermehrt auch dadurch, dass Hidden-Terminal-Probleme in Kauf genommen werden oder veränderliche Paketgrößen und -raten schlecht unterstützt werden. Deshalb wird ein Ansatz namens "Scheduling based on Acknowledgement Feedback Exchange" vorgeschlagen. Zunächst wird eine Funkreservierung in mehrere ineinander verschachtelte Unter-Reservierungen mit verschiedenen Funkressourcen unterteilt, was die Robustheit gegenüber wiederholenden Kollisionen erhöht. Dies ist die Grundlage für eine verteilte Staukontrolle, die die Periodizitätseigenschaft nicht verletzt. Außerdem können so veränderliche Paketgrößen oder -raten besser abgebildet werden. Durch die periodische Wiederverwendung können Acknowledgements für Funkressourcen statt für Pakete ausgesendet werden. Diese können in einer Bitmap in den Padding-Bits übertragen werden. Mittels der Einbeziehung dieser Informationen bei der Auswahl von Funkressourcen können Hidden-Terminal-Probleme effizient vermieden werden, da die Acknowledgements auch eine Verwendung dieser Funkressource ankündigen. Kollisionen können nun entdeckt und eine Wiederholung vermieden werden. Die Evaluierung des neuen MAC-Protokolls wurde zum großen Teil mittels diskreter-Event-Simulationen durchgeführt, wobei die Bewegung jedes einzelnen Fahrzeuges simuliert wurde. Der vorgeschlagene Ansatz führt zu einer deutlich erhöhten Paketzustellrate. Die Verwendung einer anwendungsbezogenen Awareness-Metrik zeigt, dass die Zuverlässigkeit der Kommunikation durch den Ansatz deutlich verbessert werden kann. Somit zeigt sich der präsentierte Ansatz als vielversprechende Lösung für die erheblichen Probleme, die der LTE Modus 4 mit sich bringt.The LTE Standard added support for a direct vehicle-to-vehicle communication via the Sidelink with Release 14. This dissertation focuses on the scheduling Mode 4, a distributed MAC protocol without involvement of the base station, which requires the periodic reuse of radio resources. The state of the art and a own analysis of this protocol unveil multiple problems. For example, packet collisions repeat in time, so that some vehicles are unable to distribute safety-critical information for extended periods of time. Collisions also arise due to the hidden-terminal problem, which is simply put up with in Mode 4. Additionally, varying packet sizes or rates can hardly be supported. Consequently, an approach called "Scheduling based on Acknowledgement Feedback Exchange" is proposed. Firstly, a reservation of radio resources is split into multiple, interleaved sub-reservations that use different radio resources. This increases the robustness against repeating collisions. It is also the basis for a distributed congestion control that does not violate the periodicity. Moreover, different packet rates or sizes can be supported. The periodic reuse of radio resources enables the transmission of acknowledgements for radio resources instead of packets. These can be transmitted in a bitmap inside the padding bits. Hidden-terminal problems can be mitigated by considering the acknowledgements when selecting radio resources as they announce the use of these radio resources. Collisions can also be detected and prevented from re-occurring. The evaluation of the MAC protocol is mostly performed using discrete-event simulations, which model the movement of every single vehicle. The presented approach leads to a clear improvement of the packet delivery rate. The use of an application-oriented metric shows that the communication robustness can be improved distinctly. The proposed approach hence presents itself as a promising solution for the considerable problems of LTE Mode 4
