    Spoken language understanding with kernels for syntactic/semantic structures

    ABSTRACT Automatic concept segmentation and labeling are the fundamental problems of Spoken Language Understanding in dialog systems. Such tasks are usually approached by using generative or discriminative models based on n-grams. As the uncertainty or ambiguity of the spoken input to dialog system increase, we expect to need dependencies beyond n-gram statistics. In this paper, a general purpose statistical syntactic parser is used to detect syntactic/semantic dependencies between concepts in order to increase the accuracy of sentence segmentation and concept labeling. The main novelty of the approach is the use of new tree kernel functions which encode syntactic/semantic structures in discriminative learning models. We experimented with Support Vector Machines and the above kernels on the standard ATIS dataset. The proposed algorithm automatically parses natural language text with offthe-shelf statistical parser and labels the syntactic (sub)trees with concept labels. The results show that the proposed model is very accurate and competitive with respect to state-of-theart models when combined with n-gram based models

    dissertationTraffic congestion occurs because the available capacity cannot serve the desired demand on a portion of the roadway at a particular time. Major sources of congestion include recurring bottlenecks, incidents, work zones, inclement weather, poor signal timing, and day-to-day fluctuations in normal traffic demand. This dissertation addresses a series of critical and challenging issues in evaluating the benefits of Advanced Traveler Information Strategies under different uncertainty modeling approaches are integrated in this dissertation, namely: mathematical programming, dynamic simulation and analytical approximation. The proposed models aim to 1) represent static-state network user equilibrium conditions, knowledge quality and accessibility of traveler information systems under both stochastic capacity and stochastic demand distributions; 2) characterize day-to-day learning behavior with different information groups under stochastic capacity and 3) quantify travel time variability from stochastic capacity distribution functions on critical bottlenecks. First, a nonlinear optimization-based conceptual framework is proposed for incorporating stochastic capacity, stochastic demand, travel time performance functions and varying degrees of traveler knowledge in an advanced traveler information provision environment. This method categorizes commuters into two classes: (1) those with access to perfect traffic information every day, and (2) those with knowledge of the expected traffic conditions across different days. Using a gap function framework, two mathematical programming models are further formulated to describe the route choice behavior of the perfect information and expected travel time user classes under stochastic day-dependent travel time. This dissertation also presents adaptive day-to-day traveler learning and route choice behavioral models under the travel time variability. To account for different levels of information availability and cognitive limitations of individual travelers, a set of "bounded rationality" rules are adapted to describe route choice rules for a traffic system with inherent process noise and different information provision strategies. In addition, this dissertation investigates a fundamental problem of quantifying travel time variability from its root sources: stochastic capacity and demand variations that follow commonly used log-normal distributions. The proposed models provide theoretically rigorous and practically usefully tools to understand the causes of travel time unreliability and evaluate the system-wide benefit of reducing demand and capacity variability

    Complexity of Lexical Descriptions and its Relevance to Partial Parsing

    In this dissertation, we have proposed novel methods for robust parsing that integrate the flexibility of linguistically motivated lexical descriptions with the robustness of statistical techniques. Our thesis is that the computation of linguistic structure can be localized if lexical items are associated with rich descriptions (supertags) that impose complex constraints in a local context. However, increasing the complexity of descriptions makes the number of different descriptions for each lexical item much larger and hence increases the local ambiguity for a parser. This local ambiguity can be resolved by using supertag co-occurrence statistics collected from parsed corpora. We have explored these ideas in the context of Lexicalized Tree-Adjoining Grammar (LTAG) framework wherein supertag disambiguation provides a representation that is an almost parse. We have used the disambiguated supertag sequence in conjunction with a lightweight dependency analyzer to compute noun groups, verb groups, dependency linkages and even partial parses. We have shown that a trigram-based supertagger achieves an accuracy of 92.1‰ on Wall Street Journal (WSJ) texts. Furthermore, we have shown that the lightweight dependency analysis on the output of the supertagger identifies 83‰ of the dependency links accurately. We have exploited the representation of supertags with Explanation-Based Learning to improve parsing effciency. In this approach, parsing in limited domains can be modeled as a Finite-State Transduction. We have implemented such a system for the ATIS domain which improves parsing eciency by a factor of 15. We have used the supertagger in a variety of applications to provide lexical descriptions at an appropriate granularity. In an information retrieval application, we show that the supertag based system performs at higher levels of precision compared to a system based on part-of-speech tags. In an information extraction task, supertags are used in specifying extraction patterns. For language modeling applications, we view supertags as syntactically motivated class labels in a class-based language model. The distinction between recursive and non-recursive supertags is exploited in a sentence simplification application

    Human-Centered Systems Analysis of Aircraft Separation from Adverse Weather

    Adverse weather significantly impacts the safety and efficiency of flight operations. Weather information plays a key role in mitigating the impact of adverse weather on flight operations by supporting air transportation decision-makers’ awareness of operational and mission risks. The emergence of new technologies for the surveillance, modeling, dissemination and presentation of information provides opportunities for improving both weather information and user decision-making. In order to support the development of new weather information systems, it is important to understand this complex problem thoroughly. This thesis applies a human-centered systems engineering approach to study the problem of separating aircraft from adverse weather. The approach explicitly considers the role of the human operator as part of the larger operational system. A series of models describing the interaction of the key elements of the adverse aircraft-weather encounter problem and a framework that characterizes users’ temporal decisionmaking were developed. Another framework that better matches pilots’ perspectives compared to traditional forecast verification methods articulated the value of forecast valid time according to a spacetime reference frame. The models and frameworks were validated using focused interviews with ten national subject matter experts in aviation meteorology or flight operations. The experts unanimously supported the general structure of the models and made suggestions on clarifications and refinements which were integrated in the final models. In addition, a cognitive walk-through of three adverse aircraft-weather encounters was conducted to provide an experiential perspective on the aviation weather problem. The scenarios were chosen to represent three of the most significant aviation weather hazards: icing, convective weather and low ceilings and visibility. They were built on actual meteorological information and the missions and pilot decisions were synthesized to investigate important weather encounter events. The cognitive walkthrough and the models were then used to identify opportunities for improving weather information and training. Of these, the most significant include opportunities to address users’ four-dimensional trajectorycentric perspectives and opportunities to improve the ability of pilots to make contingency plans when dealing with stochastic information
