    Summative Stereoscopic Image Compression using Arithmetic Coding

    Image compression targets at plummeting the amount of bits required for image representation for save storage space and speed up the transmission over network. The reduction of size helps to store more images in the disk and take less transfer time in the data network. Stereoscopic image refers to a three dimensional (3D) image that is perceived by the human brain as the transformation of two images that is being sent to the left and right human eyes with distinct phases. However, storing of these images takes twice space than a single image and hence the motivation for this novel approach called Summative Stereoscopic Image Compression using Arithmetic Coding (S2ICAC) where the difference and average of these stereo pair images are calculated, quantized in the case of lossy approach and unquantized in the case of lossless approach, and arithmetic coding is applied. The experimental result analysis indicates that the proposed method achieves high compression ratio and high PSNR value. The proposed method is also compared with JPEG 2000 Position Based Coding Scheme(JPEG 2000 PBCS) and Stereoscopic Image Compression using Huffman Coding (SICHC). From the experimental analysis, it is observed that S2ICAC outperforms JPEG 2000 PBCS as well as SICHC

    A family of stereoscopic image compression algorithms using wavelet transforms

    With the standardization of JPEG-2000, wavelet-based image and video compression technologies are gradually replacing the popular DCT-based methods. In parallel to this, recent developments in autostereoscopic display technology is now threatening to revolutionize the way in which consumers are used to enjoying the traditional 2D display based electronic media such as television, computer and movies. However, due to the two-fold bandwidth/storage space requirement of stereoscopic imaging, an essential requirement of a stereo imaging system is efficient data compression. In this thesis, seven wavelet-based stereo image compression algorithms are proposed, to take advantage of the higher data compaction capability and better flexibility of wavelets. In the proposed CODEC I, block-based disparity estimation/compensation (DE/DC) is performed in pixel domain. However, this results in an inefficiency when DWT is applied on the whole predictive error image that results from the DE process. This is because of the existence of artificial block boundaries between error blocks in the predictive error image. To overcome this problem, in the remaining proposed CODECs, DE/DC is performed in the wavelet domain. Due to the multiresolution nature of the wavelet domain, two methods of disparity estimation and compensation have been proposed. The first method is performing DEJDC in each subband of the lowest/coarsest resolution level and then propagating the disparity vectors obtained to the corresponding subbands of higher/finer resolution. Note that DE is not performed in every subband due to the high overhead bits that could be required for the coding of disparity vectors of all subbands. This method is being used in CODEC II. In the second method, DEJDC is performed m the wavelet-block domain. This enables disparity estimation to be performed m all subbands simultaneously without increasing the overhead bits required for the coding disparity vectors. This method is used by CODEC III. However, performing disparity estimation/compensation in all subbands would result in a significant improvement of CODEC III. To further improve the performance of CODEC ill, pioneering wavelet-block search technique is implemented in CODEC IV. The pioneering wavelet-block search technique enables the right/predicted image to be reconstructed at the decoder end without the need of transmitting the disparity vectors. In proposed CODEC V, pioneering block search is performed in all subbands of DWT decomposition which results in an improvement of its performance. Further, the CODEC IV and V are able to perform at very low bit rates(< 0.15 bpp). In CODEC VI and CODEC VII, Overlapped Block Disparity Compensation (OBDC) is used with & without the need of coding disparity vector. Our experiment results showed that no significant coding gains could be obtained for these CODECs over CODEC IV & V. All proposed CODECs m this thesis are wavelet-based stereo image coding algorithms that maximise the flexibility and benefits offered by wavelet transform technology when applied to stereo imaging. In addition the use of a baseline-JPEG coding architecture would enable the easy adaptation of the proposed algorithms within systems originally built for DCT-based coding. This is an important feature that would be useful during an era where DCT-based technology is only slowly being phased out to give way for DWT based compression technology. In addition, this thesis proposed a stereo image coding algorithm that uses JPEG-2000 technology as the basic compression engine. The proposed CODEC, named RASTER is a rate scalable stereo image CODEC that has a unique ability to preserve the image quality at binocular depth boundaries, which is an important requirement in the design of stereo image CODEC. The experimental results have shown that the proposed CODEC is able to achieve PSNR gains of up to 3.7 dB as compared to directly transmitting the right frame using JPEG-2000

    Learning sparse representations of depth

    This paper introduces a new method for learning and inferring sparse representations of depth (disparity) maps. The proposed algorithm relaxes the usual assumption of the stationary noise model in sparse coding. This enables learning from data corrupted with spatially varying noise or uncertainty, typically obtained by laser range scanners or structured light depth cameras. Sparse representations are learned from the Middlebury database disparity maps and then exploited in a two-layer graphical model for inferring depth from stereo, by including a sparsity prior on the learned features. Since they capture higher-order dependencies in the depth structure, these priors can complement smoothness priors commonly used in depth inference based on Markov Random Field (MRF) models. Inference on the proposed graph is achieved using an alternating iterative optimization technique, where the first layer is solved using an existing MRF-based stereo matching algorithm, then held fixed as the second layer is solved using the proposed non-stationary sparse coding algorithm. This leads to a general method for improving solutions of state of the art MRF-based depth estimation algorithms. Our experimental results first show that depth inference using learned representations leads to state of the art denoising of depth maps obtained from laser range scanners and a time of flight camera. Furthermore, we show that adding sparse priors improves the results of two depth estimation methods: the classical graph cut algorithm by Boykov et al. and the more recent algorithm of Woodford et al.Comment: 12 page

    Transformées basées graphes pour la compression de nouvelles modalités d’image

    Due to the large availability of new camera types capturing extra geometrical information, as well as the emergence of new image modalities such as light fields and omni-directional images, a huge amount of high dimensional data has to be stored and delivered. The ever growing streaming and storage requirements of these new image modalities require novel image coding tools that exploit the complex structure of those data. This thesis aims at exploring novel graph based approaches for adapting traditional image transform coding techniques to the emerging data types where the sampled information are lying on irregular structures. In a first contribution, novel local graph based transforms are designed for light field compact representations. By leveraging a careful design of local transform supports and a local basis functions optimization procedure, significant improvements in terms of energy compaction can be obtained. Nevertheless, the locality of the supports did not permit to exploit long term dependencies of the signal. This led to a second contribution where different sampling strategies are investigated. Coupled with novel prediction methods, they led to very prominent results for quasi-lossless compression of light fields. The third part of the thesis focuses on the definition of rate-distortion optimized sub-graphs for the coding of omni-directional content. If we move further and give more degree of freedom to the graphs we wish to use, we can learn or define a model (set of weights on the edges) that might not be entirely reliable for transform design. The last part of the thesis is dedicated to theoretically analyze the effect of the uncertainty on the efficiency of the graph transforms.En raison de la grande disponibilité de nouveaux types de caméras capturant des informations géométriques supplémentaires, ainsi que de l'émergence de nouvelles modalités d'image telles que les champs de lumière et les images omnidirectionnelles, il est nécessaire de stocker et de diffuser une quantité énorme de hautes dimensions. Les exigences croissantes en matière de streaming et de stockage de ces nouvelles modalités d’image nécessitent de nouveaux outils de codage d’images exploitant la structure complexe de ces données. Cette thèse a pour but d'explorer de nouvelles approches basées sur les graphes pour adapter les techniques de codage de transformées d'image aux types de données émergents où les informations échantillonnées reposent sur des structures irrégulières. Dans une première contribution, de nouvelles transformées basées sur des graphes locaux sont conçues pour des représentations compactes des champs de lumière. En tirant parti d’une conception minutieuse des supports de transformées locaux et d’une procédure d’optimisation locale des fonctions de base , il est possible d’améliorer considérablement le compaction d'énergie. Néanmoins, la localisation des supports ne permettait pas d'exploiter les dépendances à long terme du signal. Cela a conduit à une deuxième contribution où différentes stratégies d'échantillonnage sont étudiées. Couplés à de nouvelles méthodes de prédiction, ils ont conduit à des résultats très importants en ce qui concerne la compression quasi sans perte de champs de lumière statiques. La troisième partie de la thèse porte sur la définition de sous-graphes optimisés en distorsion de débit pour le codage de contenu omnidirectionnel. Si nous allons plus loin et donnons plus de liberté aux graphes que nous souhaitons utiliser, nous pouvons apprendre ou définir un modèle (ensemble de poids sur les arêtes) qui pourrait ne pas être entièrement fiable pour la conception de transformées. La dernière partie de la thèse est consacrée à l'analyse théorique de l'effet de l'incertitude sur l'efficacité des transformées basées graphes

    Food Recognition and Volume Estimation in a Dietary Assessment System

    Recently obesity has become an epidemic and one of the most serious worldwide public health concerns of the 21st century. Obesity diminishes the average life expectancy and there is now convincing evidence that poor diet, in combination with physical inactivity are key determinants of an individual s risk of developing chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease or diabetes. Assessing what people eat is fundamental to establishing the link between diet and disease. Food records are considered the best approach for assessing energy intake. However, this method requires literate and highly motivated subjects. This is a particular problem for adolescents and young adults who are the least likely to undertake food records. The ready access of the majority of the population to mobile phones (with integrated camera, improved memory capacity, network connectivity and faster processing capability) has opened up new opportunities for dietary assessment. The dietary information extracted from dietary assessment provide valuable insights into the cause of diseases that greatly helps practicing dietitians and researchers to develop subsequent approaches for mounting intervention programs for prevention. In such systems, the camera in the mobile phone is used for capturing images of food consumed and these images are then processed to automatically estimate the nutritional content of the food. However, food objects are deformable objects that exhibit variations in appearance, shape, texture and color so the food classification and volume estimation in these systems suffer from lower accuracy. The improvement of the food recognition accuracy and volume estimation accuracy are challenging tasks. This thesis presents new techniques for food classification and food volume estimation. For food recognition, emphasis was given to texture features. The existing food recognition techniques assume that the food images will be viewed at similar scales and from the same viewpoints. However, this assumption fails in practical applications, because it is difficult to ensure that a user in a dietary assessment system will put his/her camera at the same scale and orientation to capture food images as that of the target food images in the database. A new scale and rotation invariant feature generation approach that applies Gabor filter banks is proposed. To obtain scale and rotation invariance, the proposed approach identifies the dominant orientation of the filtered coefficient and applies a circular shifting operation to place this value at the first scale of dominant direction. The advantages of this technique are it does not require the scale factor to be known in advance and it is scale/and rotation invariant separately and concurrently. This approach is modified to achieve improved accuracy by applying a Gaussian window along the scale dimension which reduces the impact of high and low frequencies of the filter outputs enabling better matching between the same classes. Besides automatic classification, semi automatic classification and group classification are also considered to have an idea about the improvement. To estimate the volume of a food item, a stereo pair is used to recover the structure as a 3D point cloud. A slice based volume estimation approach is proposed that converts the 3D point cloud to a series of 2D slices. The proposed approach eliminates the problem of knowing the distance between two cameras with the help of disparities and depth information from a fiducial marker. The experimental results show that the proposed approach can provide an accurate estimate of food volume

    Recent advent of graph signal processing (GSP) has spurred intensive studies of signals that live naturally on irregular data kernels described by graphs (e.g., social networks, wireless sensor networks). Though a digital image contains pixels that reside on a regularly sampled 2D grid, if one can design an appropriate underlying graph connecting pixels with weights that reflect the image structure, then one can interpret the image (or image patch) as a signal on a graph, and apply GSP tools for processing and analysis of the signal in graph spectral domain. In this article, we overview recent graph spectral techniques in GSP specifically for image / video processing.     Patch-based Denoising Algorithms for Single and Multi-view Images

    In general, all single and multi-view digital images are captured using sensors, where they are often contaminated with noise, which is an undesired random signal. Such noise can also be produced during transmission or by lossy image compression. Reducing the noise and enhancing those images is among the fundamental digital image processing tasks. Improving the performance of image denoising methods, would greatly contribute to single or multi-view image processing techniques, e.g. segmentation, computing disparity maps, etc. Patch-based denoising methods have recently emerged as the state-of-the-art denoising approaches for various additive noise levels. This thesis proposes two patch-based denoising methods for single and multi-view images, respectively. A modification to the block matching 3D algorithm is proposed for single image denoising. An adaptive collaborative thresholding filter is proposed which consists of a classification map and a set of various thresholding levels and operators. These are exploited when the collaborative hard-thresholding step is applied. Moreover, the collaborative Wiener filtering is improved by assigning greater weight when dealing with similar patches. For the denoising of multi-view images, this thesis proposes algorithms that takes a pair of noisy images captured from two different directions at the same time (stereoscopic images). The structural, maximum difference or the singular value decomposition-based similarity metrics is utilized for identifying locations of similar search windows in the input images. The non-local means algorithm is adapted for filtering these noisy multi-view images. The performance of both methods have been evaluated both quantitatively and qualitatively through a number of experiments using the peak signal-to-noise ratio and the mean structural similarity measure. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm for single image denoising outperforms the original block matching 3D algorithm at various noise levels. Moreover, the proposed algorithm for multi-view image denoising can effectively reduce noise and assist to estimate more accurate disparity maps at various noise levels

    Automated Complexity-Sensitive Image Fusion

    To construct a complete representation of a scene with environmental obstacles such as fog, smoke, darkness, or textural homogeneity, multisensor video streams captured in diferent modalities are considered. A computational method for automatically fusing multimodal image streams into a highly informative and unified stream is proposed. The method consists of the following steps: 1. Image registration is performed to align video frames in the visible band over time, adapting to the nonplanarity of the scene by automatically subdividing the image domain into regions approximating planar patches 2. Wavelet coefficients are computed for each of the input frames in each modality 3. Corresponding regions and points are compared using spatial and temporal information across various scales 4. Decision rules based on the results of multimodal image analysis are used to combine thewavelet coefficients from different modalities 5. The combined wavelet coefficients are inverted to produce an output frame containing useful information gathered from the available modalities Experiments show that the proposed system is capable of producing fused output containing the characteristics of color visible-spectrum imagery while adding information exclusive to infrared imagery, with attractive visual and informational properties

    On unifying sparsity and geometry for image-based 3D scene representation

    Demand has emerged for next generation visual technologies that go beyond conventional 2D imaging. Such technologies should capture and communicate all perceptually relevant three-dimensional information about an environment to a distant observer, providing a satisfying, immersive experience. Camera networks offer a low cost solution to the acquisition of 3D visual information, by capturing multi-view images from different viewpoints. However, the camera's representation of the data is not ideal for common tasks such as data compression or 3D scene analysis, as it does not make the 3D scene geometry explicit. Image-based scene representations fundamentally require a multi-view image model that facilitates extraction of underlying geometrical relationships between the cameras and scene components. Developing new, efficient multi-view image models is thus one of the major challenges in image-based 3D scene representation methods. This dissertation focuses on defining and exploiting a new method for multi-view image representation, from which the 3D geometry information is easily extractable, and which is additionally highly compressible. The method is based on sparse image representation using an overcomplete dictionary of geometric features, where a single image is represented as a linear combination of few fundamental image structure features (edges for example). We construct the dictionary by applying a unitary operator to an analytic function, which introduces a composition of geometric transforms (translations, rotation and anisotropic scaling) to that function. The advantage of this approach is that the features across multiple views can be related with a single composition of transforms. We then establish a connection between image components and scene geometry by defining the transforms that satisfy the multi-view geometry constraint, and obtain a new geometric multi-view correlation model. We first address the construction of dictionaries for images acquired by omnidirectional cameras, which are particularly convenient for scene representation due to their wide field of view. Since most omnidirectional images can be uniquely mapped to spherical images, we form a dictionary by applying motions on the sphere, rotations, and anisotropic scaling to a function that lives on the sphere. We have used this dictionary and a sparse approximation algorithm, Matching Pursuit, for compression of omnidirectional images, and additionally for coding 3D objects represented as spherical signals. Both methods offer better rate-distortion performance than state of the art schemes at low bit rates. The novel multi-view representation method and the dictionary on the sphere are then exploited for the design of a distributed coding method for multi-view omnidirectional images. In a distributed scenario, cameras compress acquired images without communicating with each other. Using a reliable model of correlation between views, distributed coding can achieve higher compression ratios than independent compression of each image. However, the lack of a proper model has been an obstacle for distributed coding in camera networks for many years. We propose to use our geometric correlation model for distributed multi-view image coding with side information. The encoder employs a coset coding strategy, developed by dictionary partitioning based on atom shape similarity and multi-view geometry constraints. Our method results in significant rate savings compared to independent coding. An additional contribution of the proposed correlation model is that it gives information about the scene geometry, leading to a new camera pose estimation method using an extremely small amount of data from each camera. Finally, we develop a method for learning stereo visual dictionaries based on the new multi-view image model. Although dictionary learning for still images has received a lot of attention recently, dictionary learning for stereo images has been investigated only sparingly. Our method maximizes the likelihood that a set of natural stereo images is efficiently represented with selected stereo dictionaries, where the multi-view geometry constraint is included in the probabilistic modeling. Experimental results demonstrate that including the geometric constraints in learning leads to stereo dictionaries that give both better distributed stereo matching and approximation properties than randomly selected dictionaries. We show that learning dictionaries for optimal scene representation based on the novel correlation model improves the camera pose estimation and that it can be beneficial for distributed coding
