    Learning for Humanoid Multi-Contact Navigation Planning

    Humanoids' abilities to navigate uneven terrain make them well-suited for disaster response efforts, but humanoid motion planning in unstructured environments remains a challenging problem. In this dissertation we focus on planning contact sequences for a humanoid robot navigating in large unstructured environments using multi-contact motion, including both foot and palm contacts. In particular, we address the two following questions: (1) How do we efficiently generate a feasible contact sequence? and (2) How do we efficiently generate contact sequences which lead to dynamically-robust motions? For the first question, we propose a library-based method that retrieves motion plans from a library constructed offline, and adapts them with local trajectory optimization to generate the full motion plan from the start to the goal. This approach outperforms a conventional graph search contact planner when it is difficult to decide which contact is preferable with a simplified robot model and local environment information. We also propose a learning approach to estimate the difficulty to traverse a certain region based on the environment features. By integrating the two approaches, we propose a planning framework that uses graph search planner to find contact sequences around easy regions. When it is necessary to go through a difficult region, the framework switches to use the library-based method around the region to find a feasible contact sequence faster. For the second question, we consider dynamic motions in contact planning. Most humanoid motion generators do not optimize the dynamic robustness of a contact sequence. By querying a learned model to predict the dynamic feasibility and robustness of each contact transition from a centroidal dynamics optimizer, the proposed planner efficiently finds contact sequences which lead to dynamically-robust motions. We also propose a learning-based footstep planner which takes external disturbances into account. The planner considers not only the poses of the planned contact sequence, but also alternative contacts near the planned contact sequence that can be used to recover from external disturbances.     Planning in constraint space for multi-body manipulation tasks

    Robots are inherently limited by physical constraints on their link lengths, motor torques, battery power and structural rigidity. To thrive in circumstances that push these limits, such as in search and rescue scenarios, intelligent agents can use the available objects in their environment as tools. Reasoning about arbitrary objects and how they can be placed together to create useful structures such as ramps, bridges or simple machines is critical to push beyond one's physical limitations. Unfortunately, the solution space is combinatorial in the number of available objects and the configuration space of the chosen objects and the robot that uses the structure is high dimensional. To address these challenges, we propose using constraint satisfaction as a means to test the feasibility of candidate structures and adopt search algorithms in the classical planning literature to find sufficient designs. The key idea is that the interactions between the components of a structure can be encoded as equality and inequality constraints on the configuration spaces of the respective objects. Furthermore, constraints that are induced by a broadly defined action, such as placing an object on another, can be grouped together using logical representations such as Planning Domain Definition Language (PDDL). Then, a classical planning search algorithm can reason about which set of constraints to impose on the available objects, iteratively creating a structure that satisfies the task goals and the robot constraints. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this framework, we present both simulation and real robot results with static structures such as ramps, bridges and stairs, and quasi-static structures such as lever-fulcrum simple machines.Ph.D

    Path planning algorithms for autonomous navigation of a non-holonomic robot in unstructured environments

    openPath planning is a crucial aspect of autonomous robot navigation, enabling robots to efficiently and safely navigate through complex environments. This thesis focuses on autonomous navigation for robots in dynamic and uncertain environments. In particular, the project aims to analyze the localization and path planning problems. A fundamental review of the existing literature on path planning algorithms has been carried on. Various factors affecting path planning, such as sensor data fusion, map representation, and motion constraints, are also analyzed. Thanks to the collaboration with E80 Group S.p.A., the project has been developed using ROS (Robot Operating System) on a Clearpath Dingo-O, an indoor mobile robot. To address the challenges posed by unstructured and dynamic environments, ROS follows a combined approach of using a global planner and a local planner. The global planner generates a high-level path, considering the overall environment, while the local planner handles real-time adjustments to avoid moving obstacles and optimize the trajectory. This thesis describes the role of the global planner in a ROS-framework. Performance benchmarking of traditional algorithms like Dijkstra and A*, as well as other techniques, is fundamental in order to understand the limits of these methods. In the end, the Hybrid A* algorithm is introduced as a promising approach for addressing the issues of unstructured environments for autonomous navigation of a non-holonomic robot. The core concepts and implementation details of the algorithm are discussed, emphasizing its ability to efficiently explore continuous state spaces and generate drivable paths.The effectiveness of the proposed path planning algorithms is evaluated through extensive simulations and real-world experiments using the mobile platform.     Autonomous robots are highly complex systems. In order to operate in dynamic environments, adaptability in their decision-making algorithms is a must. Thus, the internal and external information that robots obtain from sensors is critical to re-evaluate their decisions in real time. Accuracy is key in this endeavor, both from the hardware side and the modeling point of view. In order to guarantee the highest performance, sensors need to be correctly calibrated. To this end, some parameters are tuned so that the particular realization of a sensor best matches a generalized mathematical model. This step grows in complexity with the integration of multiple sensors, which is generally a requirement in order to cope with the dynamic nature of real world applications. This project aims to deal with the calibration of an inertial measurement unit, or IMU, and a Light Detection and Ranging device, or LiDAR. An offline batch optimization procedure is proposed to optimally estimate the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of the model. Then, an online state estimation module that makes use of the aforementioned parameters and the fusion of LiDAR-inertial data for local navigation is proposed. Additionally, it incorporates real time corrections to account for the time-varying nature of the model, essential to deal with exposure to continued operation and wear and tear.     LiDAR-Based Place Recognition For Autonomous Driving: A Survey

    LiDAR-based place recognition (LPR) plays a pivotal role in autonomous driving, which assists Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) systems in reducing accumulated errors and achieving reliable localization. However, existing reviews predominantly concentrate on visual place recognition (VPR) methods. Despite the recent remarkable progress in LPR, to the best of our knowledge, there is no dedicated systematic review in this area. This paper bridges the gap by providing a comprehensive review of place recognition methods employing LiDAR sensors, thus facilitating and encouraging further research. We commence by delving into the problem formulation of place recognition, exploring existing challenges, and describing relations to previous surveys. Subsequently, we conduct an in-depth review of related research, which offers detailed classifications, strengths and weaknesses, and architectures. Finally, we summarize existing datasets, commonly used evaluation metrics, and comprehensive evaluation results from various methods on public datasets. This paper can serve as a valuable tutorial for newcomers entering the field of place recognition and for researchers interested in long-term robot localization.
