Approximate kernel clustering
In the kernel clustering problem we are given a large positive
semi-definite matrix with and a small
positive semi-definite matrix . The goal is to find a
partition of which maximizes the quantity We study the
computational complexity of this generic clustering problem which originates in
the theory of machine learning. We design a constant factor polynomial time
approximation algorithm for this problem, answering a question posed by Song,
Smola, Gretton and Borgwardt. In some cases we manage to compute the sharp
approximation threshold for this problem assuming the Unique Games Conjecture
(UGC). In particular, when is the identity matrix the UGC
hardness threshold of this problem is exactly . We present
and study a geometric conjecture of independent interest which we show would
imply that the UGC threshold when is the identity matrix is
for every
Hierarchical growing cell structures: TreeGCS
We propose a hierarchical clustering algorithm (TreeGCS) based upon the Growing Cell Structure (GCS) neural network of Fritzke. Our algorithm refines and builds upon the GCS base, overcoming an inconsistency in the original GCS algorithm, where the network topology is susceptible to the ordering of the input vectors. Our algorithm is unsupervised, flexible, and dynamic and we have imposed no additional parameters on the underlying GCS algorithm. Our ultimate aim is a hierarchical clustering neural network that is both consistent and stable and identifies the innate hierarchical structure present in vector-based data. We demonstrate improved stability of the GCS foundation and evaluate our algorithm against the hierarchy generated by an ascendant hierarchical clustering dendogram. Our approach emulates the hierarchical clustering of the dendogram. It demonstrates the importance of the parameter settings for GCS and how they affect the stability of the clustering
On Coloring Resilient Graphs
We introduce a new notion of resilience for constraint satisfaction problems,
with the goal of more precisely determining the boundary between NP-hardness
and the existence of efficient algorithms for resilient instances. In
particular, we study -resiliently -colorable graphs, which are those
-colorable graphs that remain -colorable even after the addition of any
new edges. We prove lower bounds on the NP-hardness of coloring resiliently
colorable graphs, and provide an algorithm that colors sufficiently resilient
graphs. We also analyze the corresponding notion of resilience for -SAT.
This notion of resilience suggests an array of open questions for graph
coloring and other combinatorial problems.Comment: Appearing in MFCS 201
Dynamics of Coupling Functions in Globally Coupled Maps: Size, Periodicity and Stability of Clusters
It is shown how different globally coupled map systems can be analyzed under
a common framework by focusing on the dynamics of their respective global
coupling functions. We investigate how the functional form of the coupling
determines the formation of clusters in a globally coupled map system and the
resulting periodicity of the global interaction. The allowed distributions of
elements among periodic clusters is also found to depend on the functional form
of the coupling. Through the analogy between globally coupled maps and a single
driven map, the clustering behavior of the former systems can be characterized.
By using this analogy, the dynamics of periodic clusters in systems displaying
a constant global coupling are predicted; and for a particular family of
coupling functions, it is shown that the stability condition of these clustered
states can straightforwardly be derived.Comment: 12 pp, 5 figs, to appear in PR
