Efficacy of a four-week uphill sprint training intervention in field hockey players
Current evidence increasingly suggests that very short, supra-maximal bouts of exercise can have significant health and performance benefits. The majority of research conducted in the area however, uses laboratory-based protocols, which can lack ecological validity. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a high intensity sprint-training programme on hockey related performance measures. 14 semi-professional hockey players completed either a 4-week high intensity training (HIT) intervention, consisting of a total of six sessions HIT, which progressively increased in volume (n=7), or followed their normal training programme (Con; n=7). Straight-line sprint speed with and without a hockey stick and ball, and slalom sprint speed, with and without a hockey stick and ball were used as performance indicators. Maximal sprint speed over 22.9m was also assessed. Upon completion of the four-week intervention, straight-line sprint speed improved significantly in the HIT group (~3%), with no change in performance for the Con group. Slalom sprint speed, both with and without a hockey ball was not significantly different following the training programme in either group. Maximal sprint speed improved significantly (12.1%) in the HIT group, but there was no significant performance change in the Con group. The findings of this study indicate that a short period of HIT can significantly improve hockey related performance measures, and could be beneficial to athletes and coaches in field settings
The acute effect of whole-body vibration on cycling peak power output
The aim of the present study was to determine if an acute bout of whole-body vibration (WBV) prior to sprint cycling would increase peak power output. Ten male cyclists, all familiar with maximal sprint cycling exercise performed, on two separate occasions, a ten second standing sprint on a cycle ergometer. For one trial the sprint was preceded by a 2 minute WBV intervention, requiring the participant to stand on a vibrating platform that produced sinusoidal oscillations. The frequency and amplitude of the vibration was set at 26Hz and ‘high’ (approximately 2mm) respectively. For the other trial participants stood in the same position, however the platform did not vibrate (no-WBV; 0Hz and 0mm for frequency and amplitude respectively). No significant difference was recorded for peak power output between trials (1458.0 + 283.7 W versus 1506.3 + 232.5 W for WBV and no-WBV respectively, P = 0.17). The results suggest that WBV prior to maximal standing sprint cycling does not increase peak power output

The unique system requirements, umbilical designs considered to meet the requirements, and the problems encountered and solutions derived during the design, and development testing of the selected systems are described. The sprint 2 development effort consisted of design, analysis, and testing activities. The ISMS effort involved the performance of an extensive trade study to determine the optimum design to meet the ISMS conditions
Effects of reduced-volume of sprint interval training and the time course of physiological and performance adaptations
This study sought to determine the time course of training adaptations to two different sprint interval training programmes with the same sprint: rest ratio (1:8) but different sprint duration. Nine participants (M: 7; F: 2) were assigned to 15-s training group (15TG) consisting of 4 to 6 x 15-s sprints interspersed with 2-min recovery, whereas eight participants (M: 5; F: 3) were assigned to 30-s training group (30TG) consisting of 4 to 6 30-s sprints interspersed with 4-min recovery. Both groups performed their respective training twice per week over 9 weeks and changes in peak oxygen uptake (V̇O2peak) and time to exhaustion (TTE) were assessed every 3 weeks. Additional 8 healthy active adults (M: 6; F: 2) completed the performance assessments 9 weeks apart without performing training (control group, CON). Following 9 weeks of training, both groups improved V̇O2peak (15TG: 12.1%; 30TG: 12.8%, P < 0.05) and TTE (15TG: 16.2%; 30TG: 12.8%, P < 0.01) to a similar extent. However, while both groups showed the greatest gains in V̇O2peak at 3 weeks (15TG: 16.6%; 30TG: 17.0%, P < 0.001), those in TTE were greatest at 9 weeks. CON did not change any of performance variables following 9 weeks. This study demonstrated that whilst the changes in cardiorespiratory function plateau within several weeks with sprint interval training, endurance capacity (TTE) is more sensitive to such training over a longer time frame in moderately-trained individuals. Furthermore, a 50% reduction in sprint duration does not diminish overall training adaptations over 9 weeks
Trunk Inclination Estimate During the Sprint Start Using an Inertial Measurement Unit: A Validation Study
The proper execution of the sprint start is crucial in determining the performance during a sprint race. In this respect, when moving from the crouch to the upright position, trunk kinematics is a key element. The purpose of this study was to validate the use of a trunk-mounted inertial measurement unit (IMU) in estimating the trunk inclination and angular velocity in the sagittal plane during the sprint start. In-laboratory sprint starts were performed by five sprinters. The local acceleration and angular velocity components provided by the IMU were processed using an adaptive Kalman filter. The accuracy of the IMU inclination estimate and its consistency with trunk inclination were assessed using reference stereophotogrammetric measurements. A Bland-Altman analysis, carried out using parameters (minimum, maximum, and mean values) extracted from the time histories of the estimated variables, and curve similarity analysis (correlation coefficient > 0.99, root mean square difference < 7 deg) indicated the agreement between reference and IMU estimates, opening a promising scenario for an accurate in-field use of IMUs for sprint start performance assessment
The effectiveness of progressive and traditional coaching strategies to improve iprint and jump performance across varying levels of maturation within a general youth population
Literature pertaining to youth development has identified the importance of understanding the physical, intellectual and emotional needs of adolescent youth. The purpose of this study was to compare the use of a ‘traditional’ and ‘progressive’ coaching style to train a general male youth population to improve sprint and jump performances, whilst assessing enjoyment to comment on long term application. Maximal sprint times, sprint kinematics, unilateral jump distances and repetitive tuck jump scores were measured alongside anthropometric variables to characterise performance. Results revealed significant (p>0.05) pre/post differences in anthropometric variables across all maturation groups, and each of the maturational levels displayed a tendency to favour a particular coaching or control condition. Pre-PHV groups responded most effectively to the progressive style of coaching, displaying improvements in horizontal jump performances, and -0.7 to -2.7% improvements in all sprint times, despite also showing the largest increase in tuck jump scores (25.8%). The circa-PHV group produced their greatest improvements in the traditional intervention, as displayed through significant improvements (p<0.05) in 20m sprint times and dominant-leg horizontal jump performance, whilst also revealing the greatest deterioration in tuck jump scores (14.2%). Post-PHV displayed the greatest improvements in the control setting, suggesting the natural benefits gained through adolescent development were greater than the influence of the training interventions. In conclusion, it is suggested that matching coaching strategies and delivery techniques to the period of biological maturation may have implications for both performance and athlete safety

Physiological correlates of performance in international-standard squash players
Tactical, technical and fitness factors are important for success in elite squash. While tactical and endurance fitness aspects have been explored, altered demands that have resulted from rule changes and absence of specific tests of high-intensity exercise capabilities have prevented identification of elements of fitness that correlate with performance in elite-standard players. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between test scores and player rank in such players. With institutional ethics approval, 31 players from the England Squash performance programme participated (11 women and 20 men, mean±SD body mass 62.4±5.5 kg and 73.1±7.5 kg respectively). After habituation, participants completed countermovement and drop-jump tests, squash-specific tests of change-of-direction speed and multiple-sprint ability and the multistage fitness test in one test session. Short recoveries were allowed between tests. World rank at the time of testing was obtained from the Professional Squash Association website. In men, change-of-direction speed (??=?0.59, p?=?0.02, n?=?14) multiple-sprint ability (??=?0.78, p<0.01, n?=?13) and fastest sprint from the multiple-sprint test (??=?0.86, p<0.01, n?=?13) correlated with world rank. In women, only fastest repetition from the multiple-sprint test correlated with world rank (??=?0.65, p?=?0.04, n?=?10). Measures of high-intensity exercise capability correlated with world rank in elite-standard men and women players. Endurance capability did not relate to rank in either the men or women. The results suggest that high-intensity, variable-direction exercise capabilities are important for success in elite squash
Influence of recovery intensity on oxygen demand and repeated sprint performance
AIM: This study aimed to determine effects of recovery intensity (passive, 20, 30 and 40%V̇ O2peak) on oxygen uptake kinetics, performance and blood lactate accumulation during repeated sprints. METHODS: 7 moderately-trained male participants (V̇O2peak: 48.1 ± 5.1 ml·kg-1·min-1) performed 4 x 30-s repeated Wingate tests on 4 separate occasions. RESULTS: Recovery of V̇ O2 between sprints was prolonged with recovery intensity (time required to reach 50% V̇O2peak: Passive: 50 ± 9; 20%: 81 ± 17; 30%: 130 ± 43; 40%: 188 ± 62 sec, P<0.001), while V̇O2-to-sprint work ratio was mainly increased by the higher intensities (Passive: 138 ± 17; 20%: 149 ± 14; 30%: 159 ± 15; 40%: 158 ± 17 ml·min-1·kJ-1, P=0.001). The decline in peak power tended to be greater in the higher intensity conditions during sprint 2 (Passive: 7.4 ± 5.4; 20%: 5.8 ± 7.9; 30%: 12.7 ± 7.4; 40%: 12.7 ± 5.5%, P=0.052), whereas average power was less decreased with recovery intensity during sprint 4 (Passive: 22.4 ± 8.9; 20%: 19.9 ± 6.1; 30%: 18.4 ± 7.3; 40%: 16.6 ± 6.2%, P=0.036). Blood lactate was not different with recovery intensity (P=0.251). CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrated that while the higher recovery intensities induce prolonged oxygen recovery and impaired peak power restoration during the initial sprints, those intensities provide a greater aerobic contribution to sprint performance, resulting in better power maintenance during the latter sprints
