Leading Change through User Experience: How End Users Are Changing the Library
Cline Library is centrally located on the Northern Arizona University (NAU) campus in Flagstaff, Arizona. The library has a staff of sixty-two, and an additional forty-six student staff. According to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, NAU
is classified as “R2: Doctoral Universities—Higher Research Activity.” Founded in 1899 with twenty-three students, NAU is now a public university with over 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students who learn on campus and online, across the state and beyond. NAU has built a reputation for research and scientific discovery, and over 1,000 undergraduates present at the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium. From the beginning, NAU placed students at the center, and students are the driving force behind what Cline Library does.
Through a strategic planning process now underway, users and staff imagine the future for Cline Library as a people-focused experiential learning environment, which
is dynamic, is proactive to user needs, and promotes both individual discovery and creative collaboration. The library’s newly crafted mission and vision state

“MacGyver-Meets-Dr. Ruth”: Science Journalism and the Material Positioning of Dr. Carla Pugh
This article examines the rhetorical consequences of foregrounding female scientists\u27 materials through an analysis of seven news articles on Dr. Carla Pugh, a surgeon who designs medical patient simulators. Journalists foreground Pugh\u27s materials by positioning her as both “MacGyver,” creatively assembling simulators from everyday objects, and “Dr. Ruth,” willingly discussing intimate parts. These positions avoid focusing on Pugh\u27s personal life or body but still ultimately gender her and her work. The MacGyver position associates Pugh with gendered activities, objects, and spaces while undermining her affiliation with the technical aspects of design. Meanwhile, the Dr. Ruth position implies Pugh\u27s knowledge comes from inherent bodily expertise, making certain scientific fields appear more natural for women
Transcribing Content from Structural Images with Spotlight Mechanism
Transcribing content from structural images, e.g., writing notes from music
scores, is a challenging task as not only the content objects should be
recognized, but the internal structure should also be preserved. Existing image
recognition methods mainly work on images with simple content (e.g., text lines
with characters), but are not capable to identify ones with more complex
content (e.g., structured symbols), which often follow a fine-grained grammar.
To this end, in this paper, we propose a hierarchical Spotlight Transcribing
Network (STN) framework followed by a two-stage "where-to-what" solution.
Specifically, we first decide "where-to-look" through a novel spotlight
mechanism to focus on different areas of the original image following its
structure. Then, we decide "what-to-write" by developing a GRU based network
with the spotlight areas for transcribing the content accordingly. Moreover, we
propose two implementations on the basis of STN, i.e., STNM and STNR, where the
spotlight movement follows the Markov property and Recurrent modeling,
respectively. We also design a reinforcement method to refine the framework by
self-improving the spotlight mechanism. We conduct extensive experiments on
many structural image datasets, where the results clearly demonstrate the
effectiveness of STN framework.Comment: Accepted by KDD2018 Research Track. In proceedings of the 24th ACM

Assessing Sustainability Principles in the Design of the Tate Modern Expansion
This report analyzes the prospects of environmental sustainability in the expansion of the Tate Modern museum in London. It does so with the comparison of the 2006 and 2008 BREEAM standards, and analysis of the innovative technologies in the Tate Modern, and an analysis of the prospects of LED lighting in art museums
