    The paper investigates possibility of creating a personal voice model using transcribed speech samples of a specified speaker. The paper presents a practical way of building such speech model and some experimental results of applying the model to voice conversion. The model uses an artificial neural network organized as autoencoder that establishes correspondence between space of speech parameters and space of possible phonetic states, unified for any voice.В работе исследуется возможность формирования модели голоса заданного диктора на основе записей образцов его голоса с транскрипцией. В работе предлагается практический способ построения голосовой модели и результаты экспериментов ее применения к задаче конверсии голоса.     Acoustic correlates of Dutch lexical stress re-examined: Spectral tilt is not always more reliable than intensity

    The present study examined two acoustic cues in the production of lexical stress in Dutch: spectral tilt and overall intensity. Sluijter and Van Heuven (1996) reported that spectral tilt is a more reliable cue to stress than intensity. However, that study included only a small number of talkers (10) and only syllables with the vowels /aː/ and /ɔ/. The present study re-examined this issue in a larger and more variable dataset. We recorded 38 native speakers of Dutch (20 females) producing 744 tokens of Dutch segmentally overlapping words (e.g., VOORnaam vs. voorNAAM, “first name” vs. “respectable”), targeting 10 different vowels, in variable sentence contexts. For each syllable, we measured overall intensity and spectral tilt following Sluijter and Van Heuven (1996). Results from Linear Discriminant Analyses showed that, for the vowel /aː/ alone, spectral tilt showed an advantage over intensity, as evidenced by higher stressed/unstressed syllable classification accuracy scores for spectral tilt. However, when all vowels were included in the analysis, the advantage disappeared. These findings confirm that spectral tilt plays a larger role in signaling stress in Dutch /aː/ but show that, for a larger sample of Dutch vowels, overall intensity and spectral tilt are equally important

    A study on the relationship between the intelligibility and quality of algorithmically-modified speech for normal hearing listeners

    This study investigates the relationship between the intelligibility and quality of modified speech in noise and in quiet. Speech signals were processed by seven algorithms designed to increase speech intelligibility in noise without altering speech intensity. In three noise maskers, including both stationary and fluctuating noise at two signal-to-noise ratios (SNR), listeners identified keywords from unmodified or modified sentences. The intelligibility performance of each type of speech was measured as the listeners’ word recognition rate in each condition, while the quality was rated as a mean opinion score. In quiet, only the perceptual quality of each type of speech was assessed. The results suggest that when listening in noise, modification performance on improving intelligibility is more important than its potential negative impact on speech quality. However, when listening in quiet or at SNRs in which intelligibility is no longer an issue to listeners, the impact to speech quality due to modification becomes a concern

    Individual and environment-related acoustic-phonetic strategies for communicating in adverse conditions

    In many situations it is necessary to produce speech in ‘adverse conditions’: that is, conditions that make speech communication difficult. Research has demonstrated that speaker strategies, as described by a range of acoustic-phonetic measures, can vary both at the individual level and according to the environment, and are argued to facilitate communication. There has been debate as to the environmental specificity of these adaptations, and their effectiveness in overcoming communication difficulty. Furthermore, the manner and extent to which adaptation strategies differ between individuals is not yet well understood. This thesis presents three studies that explore the acoustic-phonetic adaptations of speakers in noisy and degraded communication conditions and their relationship with intelligibility. Study 1 investigated the effects of temporally fluctuating maskers on global acoustic-phonetic measures associated with speech in noise (Lombard speech). The results replicated findings of increased power in the modulation spectrum in Lombard speech, but showed little evidence of adaptation to masker fluctuations via the temporal envelope. Study 2 collected a larger corpus of semi-spontaneous communicative speech in noise and other degradations perturbing specific acoustic dimensions. Speakers showed different adaptations across the environments that were likely suited to overcome noise (steady and temporally fluctuating), restricted spectral and pitch information by a noise-excited vocoder, and a sensorineural hearing loss simulation. Analyses of inter-speaker variation in both studies 1 and 2 showed behaviour was highly variable and some strategy combinations were identified. Study 3 investigated the intelligibility of strategies ‘tailored’ to specific environments and the relationship between intelligibility and speaker acoustics, finding a benefit of tailored speech adaptations and discussing the potential roles of speaker flexibility, adaptation level, and intrinsic intelligibility. The overall results are discussed in relation to models of communication in adverse conditions and a model accounting for individual variability in these conditions is proposed
