While an overview of the syllabus and the teaching methodologies is undertaken in the introduction, the focus of the paper concentrates upon an in-depth discussion and analysis of 3 specific projects that were developed by 3 distinct teams of students comprised of one artist/designer and one engineer each

    ClouNS - A Cloud-native Application Reference Model for Enterprise Architects

    The capability to operate cloud-native applications can generate enormous business growth and value. But enterprise architects should be aware that cloud-native applications are vulnerable to vendor lock-in. We investigated cloud-native application design principles, public cloud service providers, and industrial cloud standards. All results indicate that most cloud service categories seem to foster vendor lock-in situations which might be especially problematic for enterprise architectures. This might sound disillusioning at first. However, we present a reference model for cloud-native applications that relies only on a small subset of well standardized IaaS services. The reference model can be used for codifying cloud technologies. It can guide technology identification, classification, adoption, research and development processes for cloud-native application and for vendor lock-in aware enterprise architecture engineering methodologies

    Structural and thermal performances of topological optimized masonry blocks

    Structural topology optimization is the most fundamental form of structural optimization and receives an increasing attention from engineers and structural designers. The method enables the exploration of the general topology and shape of structural elements at an early stage of the design process and gives rise to inspiring and innovative improvements. In this paper, topology optimization as a principle is used to design new types of insulating masonry blocks. Two main objectives are addressed: maximizing the structural stiffness and minimizing the thermal transmittance. The first part of this paper uses these objectives to create new block topologies. A general problem is formulated and the influences of boundary conditions, external loading, and filter value on the resulting geometry are discussed. In general, maximizing the stiffness is in strong contrast to minimizing the thermal transmittance. This causes problems not encountered in conventional topology optimization. Nevertheless, by adjusting the interpolation schemes and adding multiple load groups, convergent solutions are found. An isotropic material model with an enforced solid-or-empty distribution is considered as the primary method. The optimized block topologies are then thoroughly analyzed to review their structural and thermal performance using the commercial finite element software Abaqus. The direct compressive strength of the block is a measure of the structural performance and the equivalent thermal conductivity gives an indication of the thermal performance. The second part then gives some thoughts on three-dimensional optimization and the incorporation of mesostructures in the design

    The key role of organizational culture in a multi-system view of technology-driven change.

    Organizations undergoing technology-driven change must understand that technology is only one of several inter-related components which drive organizational performance. A multi-system perspective of organizations highlights the interdependencies between an organization's technology, structure and culture and how these affect organizational processes and behaviors. Successful technological innovations require that either the technology be designed to fit the organization's current structure and culture or that the organizational structure and culture be reshaped to fit the demands of the new technology. Thus, the desired effects of new technology are most often realized in organizations able to implement the additional changes that are required to maintain overall fit. To illustrate these issues, this paper presents a case study based on a technology-driven change in a Turkish financial organization.     Enabling Data-Driven Transportation Safety Improvements in Rural Alaska

    Safety improvements require funding. A clear need must be demonstrated to secure funding. For transportation safety, data, especially data about past crashes, is the usual method of demonstrating need. However, in rural locations, such data is often not available, or is not in a form amenable to use in funding applications. This research aids rural entities, often federally recognized tribes and small villages acquire data needed for funding applications. Two aspects of work product are the development of a traffic counting application for an iPad or similar device, and a review of the data requirements of the major transportation funding agencies. The traffic-counting app, UAF Traffic, demonstrated its ability to count traffic and turning movements for cars and trucks, as well as ATVs, snow machines, pedestrians, bicycles, and dog sleds. The review of the major agencies demonstrated that all the likely funders would accept qualitative data and Road Safety Audits. However, quantitative data, if it was available, was helpful
