Graphical curves and surfaces fitting are hot areas of research studies and application, such as artistic applications, analysis applications and encoding purposes. Outline capture of digital word images is important in most of the desktop publishing systems. The shapes of the characters are stored in the computer memory in terms of their outlines, and the outlines are expressed as Bezier curves. Existing methods for Arabic font outline description suffer from low fitting accuracy and efficiency. In our research, we developed a new method for outlining shapes using Bezier curves with minimal set of curve points. A distinguishing characteristic of our method is that it combines the active contour method (snake) with corner detection to achieve an initial set of points that is as close to the shape's boundaries as possible. The method links these points (snake + corner) into a compound Bezier curve, and iteratively improves the fitting of the curve over the actual boundaries of the shape. We implemented and tested our method using MATLAB. Test cases included various levels of shape complexity varying from simple, moderate, and high complexity depending on factors, such as: boundary concavities, number of corners. Results show that our method achieved average 86% of accuracy when measured relative to true shape boundary. When compared to other similar methods (Masood & Sarfraz, 2009; Sarfraz & Khan, 2002; Ferdous A Sohel, Karmakar, Dooley, & Bennamoun, 2010), our method performed comparatively well. Capturing planar shapes by approximating their outlines

AbstractA non-deterministic evolutionary approach for approximating the outlines of planar shapes has been developed. Non-uniform Rational B-splines (NURBS) have been utilized as an underlying approximation curve scheme. Simulated Annealing heuristic is used as an evolutionary methodology. In addition to independent studies of the optimization of weight and knot parameters of the NURBS, a separate scheme has also been developed for the optimization of weights and knots simultaneously. The optimized NURBS models have been fitted over the contour data of the planar shapes for the ultimate and automatic output. The output results are visually pleasing with respect to the threshold provided by the user. A web-based system has also been developed for the effective and worldwide utilization. The objective of this system is to provide the facility to visualize the output to the whole world through internet by providing the freedom to the user for various desired input parameters setting in the algorithm designed

Mind the Gap: Another look at the problem of the semantic gap in image retrieval

    No full text
This paper attempts to review and characterise the problem of the semantic gap in image retrieval and the attempts being made to bridge it. In particular, we draw from our own experience in user queries, automatic annotation and ontological techniques. The first section of the paper describes a characterisation of the semantic gap as a hierarchy between the raw media and full semantic understanding of the media's content. The second section discusses real users' queries with respect to the semantic gap. The final sections of the paper describe our own experience in attempting to bridge the semantic gap. In particular we discuss our work on auto-annotation and semantic-space models of image retrieval in order to bridge the gap from the bottom up, and the use of ontologies, which capture more semantics than keyword object labels alone, as a technique for bridging the gap from the top down

A Retinex-based Image Enhancement Scheme with Noise Aware Shadow-up Function

This paper proposes a novel image contrast enhancement method based on both a noise aware shadow-up function and Retinex (retina and cortex) decomposition. Under low light conditions, images taken by digital cameras have low contrast in dark or bright regions. This is due to a limited dynamic range that imaging sensors have. For this reason, various contrast enhancement methods have been proposed. Our proposed method can enhance the contrast of images without not only over-enhancement but also noise amplification. In the proposed method, an image is decomposed into illumination layer and reflectance layer based on the retinex theory, and lightness information of the illumination layer is adjusted. A shadow-up function is used for preventing over-enhancement. The proposed mapping function, designed by using a noise aware histogram, allows not only to enhance contrast of dark region, but also to avoid amplifying noise, even under strong noise environments.Comment: To appear in IWAIT-IFMIA 201

Towards an automatic semantic annotation of car aesthetics

The design of a new car is guided by a set of directives indicating the target market and specific engineering and aesthetic constraints, which may include also the preservation of the company brand identity or the restyling of products already on the market. When creating a new product designers are used to evaluating other existing products to take inspiration or to possibly reuse successful solutions. In the perspective of an optimised styling workflow a great benefit could come from the opportunity of easily retrieving the related documentation and existing digital models both from internal and external repositories. In fact, the rapid growth of the web contents and the widely spread adoption of computerassisted design tools have made a huge amount of digital data available, whose exploitation could be improved by more selective retrieval methods. In particular, the retrieval of aesthetic elements may help designers to more efficiently create digital models conforming to specific styling properties. The aim of the research described in this document is the definition of a framework able to support a (semi-) automatic extraction of semantic data from 3D models and other multimedia data to allow car designers to reuse knowledge and design solutions within the styling department. The first objective is then capturing and structuring both the explicit and implicit elements that contribute to the car aesthetics and can be realistically tackled through computational models and methods. The second step is the definition of a system architecture able to transfer such semantics through an automatic annotation of car models

An object-based approach to image/video-based synthesis and processing for 3-D and multiview televisions

This paper proposes an object-based approach to a class of dynamic image-based representations called "plenoptic videos," where the plenoptic video sequences are segmented into image-based rendering (IBR) objects each with its image sequence, depth map, and other relevant information such as shape and alpha information. This allows desirable functionalities such as scalability of contents, error resilience, and interactivity with individual IBR objects to be supported. Moreover, the rendering quality in scenes with large depth variations can also be improved considerably. A portable capturing system consisting of two linear camera arrays was developed to verify the proposed approach. An important step in the object-based approach is to segment the objects in video streams into layers or IBR objects. To reduce the time for segmenting plenoptic videos under the semiautomatic technique, a new object tracking method based on the level-set method is proposed. Due to possible segmentation errors around object boundaries, natural matting with Bayesian approach is also incorporated into our system. Furthermore, extensions of conventional image processing algorithms to these IBR objects are studied and illustrated with examples. Experimental results are given to illustrate the efficiency of the tracking, matting, rendering, and processing algorithms under the proposed object-based framework. © 2009 IEEE.published_or_final_versio
