Overview of Hydra: a concurrent language for synchronous digital circuit design
Hydra is a computer hardware description language that integrates several kinds of software tool (simulation, netlist generation and timing analysis) within a single circuit specification. The design language is inherently concurrent, and it offers black box abstraction and general design patterns that simplify the design of circuits with regular structure. Hydra specifications are concise, allowing the complete design of a computer system as a digital circuit within a few pages. This paper discusses the motivations behind Hydra, and illustrates the system with a significant portion of the design of a basic RISC processor

Transient analysis and synthesis of linear circuits using constraint logic programming
In this paper describes the design of a transient analysis program for linear circuits and its implementation
in a Constraint Logic Programming language, CLP(R). The transient analysis program parses the input
circuit description into a network graph, analyses its semantic correctness and then performs the transient
analysis. The test results show that the program is at least 97% accurate when run at two decimal
places. We have also compared the performance of our program with a commercial package implemented
in an imperative language. The advantages of implementing the analysis program in a CLP language
include: quick construction and ease of maintenance. We also report on the synthesis of generation of a
circuit with given transient characteristics

Structured modeling for VHDL synthesis
This report will describe a proposed modeling style for the use of the VHSIC Hardware Description Language (VHDL) in design synthesis. We will describe the operations and underlying assumptions of four design models currently understood and used in practice by designers: combinational logic, functional descriptions (involving clocked components such as counters), register transfer (data path) descriptions, and behavioral (instruction set or processor) designs. We will illustrate the various uses of the VHDL description styles (structural, dataflow and behavioral) to represent characteristics of each of these design models. Emphasis is placed on how VHDL constructs should be used in order to synthesize optimal designs

MILO : a microarchitecture and logic optimizer
In this report we discuss strengths and weaknesses of logic synthesis systems and describe a system for microarchitectural and logic optimization. Our system uses a set of algorithms for synthesizing SSI/MSI macros from parameterized microarchitecture components. In addition, it uses rules for optimizing both at the microarchitecture and logic level. The system increases designer productivity and requires less design knowledge and experience from circuit engineers

Behavioral synthesis from VHDL using structured modeling
This dissertation describes work in behavioral synthesis involving the development of a VHDL Synthesis System VSS which accepts a VHDL behavioral input specification and performs technology independent synthesis to generate a circuit netlist of generic components. The VHDL language is used for input and output descriptions. An intermediate representation which incorporates signal typing and component attributes simplifies compilation and facilitates design optimization.A Structured Modeling methodology has been developed to suggest standard VHDL modeling practices for synthesis. Structured modeling provides recommendations for the use of available VHDL description styles so that optimal designs will be synthesized.A design composed of generic components is synthesized from the input description through a process of Graph Compilation, Graph Criticism, and Design Compilation. Experiments were performed to demonstrate the effects of different modeling styles on the quality of the design produced by VSS. Several alternative VHDL models were examined for each benchmark, illustrating the improvements in design quality achieved when Structured Modeling guidelines were followed
