Performance evaluation of computer and communication networks gives rise to teletraffic problems of potentially large dimensionality. We briefly summarize a unifying system theoretic approach to efficient solution of a diversity of such problems, and introduce TELPACK, a publicly available software that implements this approach

A large class of teletraffic models can be analyzed through solving M/G/1 or G/M/1 type Markov chains. A simple but not restrictive rational structure assumption for such chains allows the use of an invariant subspace approach in this analysis. Recent publications have discussed the various advantages of this approach as compared to traditional methods. We have developed the teletraffic analysis software package TELPACK which primarily relies on the matrix sign function realization of the invariant subspace approach. TELPACK also offers some other well-known methods including traditional matrix-analytic ones. In this paper, we introduce and discuss TELPACK which is implemented in C using a subset of CLAPACK library. We also provide a brief review of the underlying theory with examples demonstrating the natural rational structure arising in some practical teletraffic models. Keywords: M/G/1 and G/M/1 type Markov chains, finite QBD chains, nonlinear matrix equations, polynomial and ratio..
