Telework: Identifying a Personal Dimension to Work-Related Socio-Technical Theory

This qualitative study uses socio-technical theory, which posits the interdependence of the social and the technical subsystems of work to view both the work and lives of managers in a Fortune 100 multinational corporation. The managers in the study were leading global virtual teams from their homes with no dedicated corporate office. We found that balancing across both the work and personal socio and technical systems, as well as across the systems in their integrated personal and professional lives, is very complex. The managers appeared to tolerate these difficulties for the flexibility they perceive teleworking provided

Toward Platform-Economy Continuity: Do Descriptive Norms and Perceived Product Attributes Matter to Youths who Use Ride-Hailing Apps?

Abstract. This study investigates how descriptive norms and perceived product attributes (utilitarian and hedonic benefits) influence the intention of young consumers to continue to adopt ride-hailing apps. We developed a conceptual model drawing upon the socio-technical theory by involving 333 Indonesian users of ride-hailing apps and estimating the model using the statistical tool of PLS-SEM-based software. The findings showed that social aspects (descriptive norms) and technical aspects (utilitarian and hedonic benefits) significantly influence young consumers to adopt ride-hailing apps. Intriguingly, a positive perception of the apps’ benefits is instrumental for encouraging young consumers to continue to adopt ride-hailing apps when descriptive norms appear, when peers in their social circle widely adopt similar apps. This study highlights the unique behavior of young consumers in adopting ride-hailing apps by accentuating the role of descriptive norms and perceived product attributes from the perspective of socio-technical theory. This study provides practical recommendations for digital platform providers, particularly TNCs (Transportation Network Companies), which offer ride-hailing services to address the young consumer segment with a community-based marketing approach to maintain their continued adoption.   Keywords: Continuation intention, platform economy, digital platform, ride-hailing services, socio-technical theory, young consumer

Exploring the Impact of Technostress on Productivity

    Get PDF
Based on empirical survey data. this study uses concepts from socio-technical theory to explore the effects of information and computer technology (ICT) created stress. that is, technostress on productivity. The paper first explains the different ways in which ICT can create stress in users, and identifies factors that create technostress. Then, it establishes relationship among technostress creators and individual productivity, Structural equation modeling is used to analyze the data and test hypothesis. The results support the hypothesized relationship and have valuable implications for management in dealing with technology related stress issues among employee

Consumer-Centric Information Systems: A Literature Review and Avenues for Further Research

    Get PDF
While consumer centricity has been extensively discussed as a concept of organizational transformation in the marketing domain, there is little research on its operationalization as a characteristic of information systems and associated antecedents. We review the marketing literature to understand generic organizational objectives of consumer centricity which are then generalized as characteristics of consumer-centric information systems. In a second step, we draw on socio-technical theory to conceptualize antecedents of consumer centricity as capabilities to align social and technical system components. Our research contributes to the body of knowledge by theoretically deriving an operationalization and antecedents of consumer centricity in IS research. This paper lays the foundation for a structured review of IS literature to theorize on component alignment capabilities as antecedents of consumer centricity. It further is the basis for case study research to construct a nomological network for consumer-centric information systems

Social Factors Influencing the Information Security Maturity of Malaysian Public Service Organisation: An Empirical Analysis

    Get PDF
Information security maturity is the measurement of the organisation’s capability to remain secure. This article focuses on the social aspect of the management approach as part of a larger study that uses a socio-technical theory as a basis for analysing the relationship between the social and technical factors in the information security management system of Malaysian Public Service organisations. The empirical analysis was conducted to identify the antecedents of the information security maturity of an organisation, mainly through the study of several social factors. Through the sample obtained from the key players of information security in Malaysian Public Service organisations, results of the multivariate test reveal the underlying dimensions of a few social factors. The final result provides empirical proof of the social factors that has the most influence on the Malaysian Public Service organisations’ information security maturity

EXPLORING THE ROLE OF SWITCHING COSTS IN EXPLAINING MICRO-GROUP ADHERENCE FROM THE SOCIO-TECHNICAL PERSPECTIVE

Micro-group is a commonly used function provided by most of China micro-blog platforms though which friends or people with common interests can share conversations like an online community. In this study, we draw from established socio-technical theory in Information Systems to develop an integrated model of customers’ adherence to micro-groups from the view of switching cost. The results of the empirical analysis confirmed that switching cost increases when the user perceived that the system was secure, full-functional or when there is a high level of network size, information value and network status. In the same way, greater switching cost was also found to have a positive influence on user adherence to micro-groups. Based on the findings, strategies to help micro-group site develop an enhanced “lock-in” effect are proposed

How Software Startups Survive: a Model based on Resource-based View and Dynamic Capabilities

    Get PDF
Rapid advances of IT have encouraged many software startups to enter the market place. Our research seeks to investigate the little-studied phenomenon of startup survival. The research is based on the resource-based view and on dynamic capabilities. We present a research model that investigates factors affecting software startup survival by examining how startups survive in their competitive environment. First, we categorize the resources of software startups into three areas based on socio-technical theory. Specifically, we view entrepreneurial resources as influencing both IT innovation and environmental resources. Second, we view dynamic capabilities as mediating the relationship between interactions among resources and software startup survival. Finally, we investigate the effect of competitive actions in moderating the relationship between dynamic capabilities and software startup survival. Our research seeks to contribute to extant research by proposing the first empirical study of which we are aware that addresses factors influencing software startup survival

A Socio-Technical Metaverse Development Framework in Higher Education

    Get PDF
The concept of the metaverse has recently generated a great deal of attention in academia and industry, with an increasing number of educational institutions expressing interest in its implementation. However, existing studies on metaverse development in higher education are still in their early stages, leaving institutions with little guidance on how to develop and implement a metaverse. Employing socio-technical theory, we propose a comprehensive nine-stage metaverse development framework (MDF) that incorporates both social and technical aspects of a metaverse initiative, thus providing a holistic approach to metaverse development. Leveraging case studies of three large universities and blending them with MDF, our study provides evidence of the applicability of our MDF and offers a better contextual understanding of metaverse development in educational settings. This paper is useful for educational institutions that are developing or considering metaverse initiatives. It contributes to the emerging literature on metaverse development in higher education

© 2018 Matar et al. Background: One of the main challenges to hospital patient flow and treatment includes the lack of a patient-centered approach, which in turn contributes to non-effective teamwork communication. Objectives: To introduce patient-centered approach by implementing electronic clinical pathways to support more effective teamwork communication. To study how to enhance teamwork communication in healthcare by implementing electronic clinical pathways. Methods: We propose a research model, integrating the Donbedian model and the socio-technical theory, to investigate the factors that influence teamwork communication in healthcare. This research applied a quantitative approach using a survey method that was designed along the same principles as in the related work. Preliminary data collection was conducted using the survey method for problem formulation. Results: Designed and developed a model for implementing electronic clinical pathways to enhance teamwork communication in healthcare. Conclusion: This study provides recommendations to hospitals to enhance teamwork communication in healthcare by implementing electronic clinical pathways
