We focus on this notion as it allows us to neatly distinguish groups, organizations, corporations – to which we may ascribe agency – from mere aggregates of individuals.     We present a formal model of opinion diffusion and formation which combines notions from social network analysis together with concepts and techniques from judgment aggregation and merging. The model allows us to study the propagation of individual opinions, represented in the form of yes/no answers to a set of multiple binary issues, in a multiagent system linked by an influence network. The process is iterative with discrete time. We are interested in characterizing properties of the network structure which guarantee convergence of the iterative process for every initial configuration of the agents' opinions, and in developing tractable algorithms for computing the set of opinions at convergence

    Experimental auctions, collective induction and choice shift: willingness-to-pay for rice quality in Senegal

    We propose a collective induction treatment as an aggregator of information and preferences, which enables testing whether consumer preferences for food quality elicited through experimental auctions are robust to aggregation. We develop a two-stage estimation method based on social judgement scheme theory to identify the determinants of social influence in collective induction. Our method is tested in a market experiment aiming to assess consumers willingness-to-pay for rice quality in Senegal. No significant choice shift was observed after collective induction, which suggests that consumer preferences for rice quality are robust to aggregation.     Probabilistic risk assessment is a methodology that can be systematically applied to estimate the risk associated with the design and operation of complex systems. The National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, UK has developed a risk management process tailored to the operation of autonomous underwater vehicles. Central to the application of the risk management process is a probabilistic risk assessment. The risk management process was applied to estimate the risk associated with an Autosub3 science campaign in the Pine Island Glacier, Antarctica, and to support decision making. The campaign was successful. In this paper we present the Autosub3 risk model and we show how this model was used to assess the campaign risk

    Self-organization in Communicating Groups: the emergence of coordination, shared references and collective intelligence\ud

    The present paper will sketch the basic ideas of the complexity paradigm, and then apply them to social systems, and in particular to groups of communicating individuals who together need to agree about how to tackle some problem or how to coordinate their actions. I will elaborate these concepts to provide an integrated foundation for a theory of self-organization, to be understood as a non-linear process of spontaneous coordination between actions. Such coordination will be shown to consist of the following components: alignment, division of labor, workflow and aggregation. I will then review some paradigmatic simulations and experiments that illustrate the alignment of references and communicative conventions between communicating agents. Finally, the paper will summarize the preliminary results of a series of experiments that I devised in order to observe the emergence of collective intelligence within a communicating group, and interpret these observations in terms of alignment, division of labor and workflow
