    Evaluating indoor positioning systems in a shopping mall : the lessons learned from the IPIN 2018 competition

    The Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation (IPIN) conference holds an annual competition in which indoor localization systems from different research groups worldwide are evaluated empirically. The objective of this competition is to establish a systematic evaluation methodology with rigorous metrics both for real-time (on-site) and post-processing (off-site) situations, in a realistic environment unfamiliar to the prototype developers. For the IPIN 2018 conference, this competition was held on September 22nd, 2018, in Atlantis, a large shopping mall in Nantes (France). Four competition tracks (two on-site and two off-site) were designed. They consisted of several 1 km routes traversing several floors of the mall. Along these paths, 180 points were topographically surveyed with a 10 cm accuracy, to serve as ground truth landmarks, combining theodolite measurements, differential global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and 3D scanner systems. 34 teams effectively competed. The accuracy score corresponds to the third quartile (75th percentile) of an error metric that combines the horizontal positioning error and the floor detection. The best results for the on-site tracks showed an accuracy score of 11.70 m (Track 1) and 5.50 m (Track 2), while the best results for the off-site tracks showed an accuracy score of 0.90 m (Track 3) and 1.30 m (Track 4). These results showed that it is possible to obtain high accuracy indoor positioning solutions in large, realistic environments using wearable light-weight sensors without deploying any beacon. This paper describes the organization work of the tracks, analyzes the methodology used to quantify the results, reviews the lessons learned from the competition and discusses its future

    Scan matching by cross-correlation and differential evolution

    Scan matching is an important task, solved in the context of many high-level problems including pose estimation, indoor localization, simultaneous localization and mapping and others. Methods that are accurate and adaptive and at the same time computationally efficient are required to enable location-based services in autonomous mobile devices. Such devices usually have a wide range of high-resolution sensors but only a limited processing power and constrained energy supply. This work introduces a novel high-level scan matching strategy that uses a combination of two advanced algorithms recently used in this field: cross-correlation and differential evolution. The cross-correlation between two laser range scans is used as an efficient measure of scan alignment and the differential evolution algorithm is used to search for the parameters of a transformation that aligns the scans. The proposed method was experimentally validated and showed good ability to match laser range scans taken shortly after each other and an excellent ability to match laser range scans taken with longer time intervals between them.Web of Science88art. no. 85

    Smartphone application for accessible navigation

We use the free and open indoor navigation service Anyplace, to design an indoor guidance system that is accessible, inexpensive, simple and user-friendly to different user groups disregarding their disabilities. The Android application that Anyplace offers, was extended and modified to serve also the needs of visually impaired users. The presented system works well with the assistive applications that Android platform offers and provides various ways for interaction between the user and the system. The system is communicating with Anyplace server to inform the user about the information of the surrounding environment and guide him/her to the desired place in the building with accessible messages. The application can process, specific pre-defined user commands and location information from existing QR labels in the building. This thesis is focusing on assisting the impaired users on indoor navigation tasks, but not on replacing the assistive means that the visually impaired user is already using. (e.g. long cane, guide dog) Experimental results show the ability of the system to effectively communicate with the user and assist him/her in way-finding tasks in the building of the University of Macedonia

    User Experience Enhancement on Smartphones using Wireless Communication Technologies

In addition, in many cases, users use a smartphone while on the move, so if a wireless communication technologies and various sensors are used for a mobile user, a better user experience can be provided. For example, when a user moves while using Wi-Fi, the user experience can be improved by providing a seamless Wi-Fi service. In addition, it is possible to provide a special service such as indoor positioning or navigation by estimating the users mobility in an indoor environment, and additional services such as location-based advertising and payment systems can also be provided. Therefore, improving the user experience by using wireless communication technology and smartphones sensors is considered to be an important research field in the future. In this dissertation, we propose three systems that can improve the user experience or convenience by usingWi-Fi, BLE, and smartphones sensors: (i) BLEND: BLE beacon-aided fast Wi-Fi handoff for smartphones, (ii) PYLON: Smartphone based Indoor Path Estimation and Localization without Human Intervention, (iii) FINISH: Fully-automated Indoor Navigation using Smartphones with Zero Human Assistance. First, we propose fast handoff scheme called BLEND exploiting BLE as secondary radio. We conduct detailed analysis of the sticky client problem on commercial smartphones with experiment and close examination of Android source code. We propose BLEND, which exploits BLE modules to provide smartphones with prior knowledge of the presence and information of APs operating at 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi channels. BLEND operating with only application requires no hardware and Android source code modification of smartphones.We prototype BLEND with commercial smartphones and evaluate the performance in real environment. Our measurement results demonstrate that BLEND significantly improves throughput and video bitrate by up to 61% and 111%, compared to a commercial Android application, respectively, with negligible energy overhead. Second, we design a path estimation and localization system, termed PYLON, which is plug-and-play on Android smartphones. PYLON includes a novel landmark correction scheme that leverages real doors of indoor environments consisting of floor plan mapping, door passing time detection and correction. It operates without any user intervention. PYLON relaxes some requirements for localization systems. It does not require any modifications to hardware or software of smartphones, and the initial location of WiFi APs, BLE beacons, and users. We implement PYLON on five Android smartphones and evaluate it on two office buildings with the help of three participants to prove applicability and scalability. PYLON achieves very high floor plan mapping accuracy with a low localization error. Finally, We design a fully-automated navigation system, termed FINISH, which addresses the problems of existing previous indoor navigation systems. FINISH generates the radio map of an indoor building based on the localization system to determine the initial location of the user. FINISH relaxes some requirements for current indoor navigation systems. It does not require any human assistance to provide navigation instructions. In addition, it is plug-and-play on Android smartphones. We implement FINISH on five Android smartphones and evaluate it on five floors of an office building with the help of multiple users to prove applicability and scalability. FINISH determines the location of the user with extremely high accuracy with in one step. In summary, we propose systems that enhance the users convenience and experience by utilizing wireless infrastructures such as Wi-Fi and BLE and various smartphones sensors such as accelerometer, gyroscope, and barometer equipped in smartphones. Systems are implemented on commercial smartphones to verify the performance through experiments.     SLAM research for port AGV based on 2D LIDAR

    With the increase in international trade, the transshipment of goods at international container ports is very busy. The AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) has been used as a new generation of automated container horizontal transport equipment. The AGV is an automated unmanned vehicle that can work 24 hours a day, increasing productivity and reducing labor costs compared to using container trucks. The ability to obtain information about the surrounding environment is a prerequisite for the AGV to automatically complete tasks in the port area. At present, the method of AGV based on RFID tag positioning and navigation has a problem of excessive cost. This dissertation has carried out a research on applying light detection and ranging (LIDAR) simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) technology to port AGV. In this master's thesis, a mobile test platform based on a laser range finder is developed to scan 360-degree environmental information (distance and angle) centered on the LIDAR and upload the information to a real-time database to generate surrounding environmental maps, and the obstacle avoidance strategy was developed based on the acquired information. The effectiveness of the platform was verified by the experiments from multiple scenarios. Then based on the first platform, another experimental platform with encoder and IMU sensor was developed. In this platform, the functionality of SLAM is enabled by the GMapping algorithm and the installation of the encoder and IMU sensor. Based on the established environment SLAM map, the path planning and obstacle avoidance functions of the platform were realized.Com o aumento do comércio internacional, o transbordo de mercadorias em portos internacionais de contentores é muito movimentado. O AGV (“Automated Guided Vehicle”) foi usado como uma nova geração de equipamentos para transporte horizontal de contentores de forma automatizada. O AGV é um veículo não tripulado automatizado que pode funcionar 24 horas por dia, aumentando a produtividade e reduzindo os custos de mão-de-obra em comparação com o uso de camiões porta-contentores. A capacidade de obter informações sobre o ambiente circundante é um pré-requisito para o AGV concluir automaticamente tarefas na área portuária. Atualmente, o método de AGV baseado no posicionamento e navegação de etiquetas RFID apresenta um problema de custo excessivo. Nesta dissertação foi realizada uma pesquisa sobre a aplicação da tecnologia LIDAR de localização e mapeamento simultâneo (SLAM) num AGV. Uma plataforma de teste móvel baseada num telémetro a laser é desenvolvida para examinar o ambiente em redor em 360 graus (distância e ângulo), centrado no LIDAR, e fazer upload da informação para uma base de dados em tempo real para gerar um mapa do ambiente em redor. Uma estratégia de prevenção de obstáculos foi também desenvolvida com base nas informações adquiridas. A eficácia da plataforma foi verificada através da realização de testes com vários cenários e obstáculos. Por fim, com base na primeira plataforma, uma outra plataforma experimental com codificador e sensor IMU foi também desenvolvida. Nesta plataforma, a funcionalidade do SLAM é ativada pelo algoritmo GMapping e pela instalação do codificador e do sensor IMU.     A Low Cost UWB Based Solution for Direct Georeferencing UAV Photogrammetry

    Thanks to their flexibility and availability at reduced costs, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been recently used on a wide range of applications and conditions. Among these, they can play an important role in monitoring critical events (e.g., disaster monitoring) when the presence of humans close to the scene shall be avoided for safety reasons, in precision farming and surveying. Despite the very large number of possible applications, their usage is mainly limited by the availability of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) in the considered environment: indeed, GNSS is of fundamental importance in order to reduce positioning error derived by the drift of (low-cost) Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) internal sensors. In order to make the usage of UAVs possible even in critical environments (when GNSS is not available or not reliable, e.g., close to mountains or in city centers, close to high buildings), this paper considers the use of a low cost Ultra Wide-Band (UWB) system as the positioning method. Furthermore, assuming the use of a calibrated camera, UWB positioning is exploited to achieve metric reconstruction on a local coordinate system. Once the georeferenced position of at least three points (e.g., positions of three UWB devices) is known, then georeferencing can be obtained, as well. The proposed approach is validated on a specific case study, the reconstruction of the façade of a university building. Average error on 90 check points distributed over the building façade, obtained by georeferencing by means of the georeferenced positions of four UWB devices at fixed positions, is 0.29 m. For comparison, the average error obtained by using four ground control points is 0.18 m

    A realistic evaluation of indoor robot position tracking systems: The IPIN 2016 competition experience

    We report a novel open competition aimed at evaluating accurate robot position tracking in indoor environments. The competition was organized within the IPIN 2016 (Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation international Conference). Here, we describe the competition, the competitors and their final results. The challenges of this new competition included: tracking an industrial robot following an unknown path but with a defined ground-truth, and open positioning system to be deployed on-site, with no restrictions apart from those related to safety issues. Our aim here is to provide sufficient detail to serve as a solid basis for future competition initiatives with a similar scope, using common metrics and objective evaluation procedures.     DEVELOPMENT OF AN AUTONOMOUS NAVIGATION SYSTEM FOR THE SHUTTLE CAR IN UNDERGROUND ROOM & PILLAR COAL MINES

    In recent years, autonomous solutions in the multi-disciplinary field of the mining engineering have been an extremely popular applied research topic. The growing demand for mineral supplies combined with the steady decline in the available surface reserves has driven the mining industry to mine deeper underground deposits. These deposits are difficult to access, and the environment may be hazardous to mine personnel (e.g., increased heat, difficult ventilation conditions, etc.). Moreover, current mining methods expose the miners to numerous occupational hazards such as working in the proximity of heavy mining equipment, possible roof falls, as well as noise and dust. As a result, the mining industry, in its efforts to modernize and advance its methods and techniques, is one of the many industries that has turned to autonomous systems. Vehicle automation in such complex working environments can play a critical role in improving worker safety and mine productivity. One of the most time-consuming tasks of the mining cycle is the transportation of the extracted ore from the face to the main haulage facility or to surface processing facilities. Although conveyor belts have long been the autonomous transportation means of choice, there are still many cases where a discrete transportation system is needed to transport materials from the face to the main haulage system. The current dissertation presents the development of a navigation system for an autonomous shuttle car (ASC) in underground room and pillar coal mines. By introducing autonomous shuttle cars, the operator can be relocated from the dusty, noisy, and potentially dangerous environment of the underground mine to the safer location of a control room. This dissertation focuses on the development and testing of an autonomous navigation system for an underground room and pillar coal mine. A simplified relative localization system which determines the location of the vehicle relatively to salient features derived from on-board 2D LiDAR scans was developed for a semi-autonomous laboratory-scale shuttle car prototype. This simplified relative localization system is heavily dependent on and at the same time leverages the room and pillar geometry. Instead of keeping track of a global position of the vehicle relatively to a fixed coordinates frame, the proposed custom localization technique requires information regarding only the immediate surroundings. The followed approach enables the prototype to navigate around the pillars in real-time using a deterministic Finite-State Machine which models the behavior of the vehicle in the room and pillar mine with only a few states. Also, a user centered GUI has been developed that allows for a human user to control and monitor the autonomous vehicle by implementing the proposed navigation system. Experimental tests have been conducted in a mock mine in order to evaluate the performance of the developed system. A number of different scenarios simulating common missions that a shuttle car needs to undertake in a room and pillar mine. The results show a minimum success ratio of 70%
