Context Aware Handover Algorithms For Mobile Positioning Systems
This work proposes context aware handover algorithms for mobile positioning
systems. The algorithms perform handover among positioning systems based
on important contextual factors related to position determination with efficient
use of battery. The proposed solution is implemented in the form of an Android
application named Locate@nav6. The performance of the proposed solution was
tested in selected experimental areas. The handover performance was compared
with other existing location applications. The proposed solution performed
correct handover among positioning systems in 95 percent of cases studied
while two other applications performed correct handover in only 50 percent of
cases studied.
Battery usage of the proposed solution is less than one third of the battery
usage of two other applications. The analysis of the positioning error of
the applications demonstrated that, the proposed solution is able to reduce
positioning error indirectly by handing over the task of positioning to an appropriate
positioning system. This kept the average error of positioning below
42.1 meters for Locate@nav6 while the average error for two other applications
namely Google Latitude and Malaysia maps was between 92.7 and 171.13
meters

CogCell: Cognitive Interplay between 60GHz Picocells and 2.4/5GHz Hotspots in the 5G Era
Rapid proliferation of wireless communication devices and the emergence of a
variety of new applications have triggered investigations into next-generation
mobile broadband systems, i.e., 5G. Legacy 2G--4G systems covering large areas
were envisioned to serve both indoor and outdoor environments. However, in the
5G-era, 80\% of overall traffic is expected to be generated in indoors. Hence,
the current approach of macro-cell mobile network, where there is no
differentiation between indoors and outdoors, needs to be reconsidered. We
envision 60\,GHz mmWave picocell architecture to support high-speed indoor and
hotspot communications. We envisage the 5G indoor network as a combination of-,
and interplay between, 2.4/5\,GHz having robust coverage and 60\,GHz links
offering high datarate. This requires an intelligent coordination and
cooperation. We propose 60\,GHz picocellular network architecture, called
CogCell, leveraging the ubiquitous WiFi. We propose to use 60\,GHz for the data
plane and 2.4/5GHz for the control plane. The hybrid network architecture
considers an opportunistic fall-back to 2.4/5\,GHz in case of poor connectivity
in the 60\,GHz domain. Further, to avoid the frequent re-beamforming in 60\,GHz
directional links due to mobility, we propose a cognitive module -- a
sensor-assisted intelligent beam switching procedure -- which reduces the
communication overhead. We believe that the CogCell concept will help future
indoor communications and possibly outdoor hotspots, where mobile stations and
access points collaborate with each other to improve the user experience.Comment: 14 PAGES in IEEE Communications Magazine, Special issue on Emerging

A mobile sensing solution for indoor and outdoor state detection
Abstract. One important research challenge in ubiquitous computing is determining a device’s indoor/outdoor environmental state. Particularly with modern smartphones, environmental information is important for enabling of new types of services and optimizing already existing functionalities.
This thesis presents a tool for Android-powered smartphones called ContextIO for detecting the device’s indoor/outdoor state by combining different onboard sensors of the device itself. To develop ContextIO, we developed a plugin to AWARE mobile sensing framework. Together the plugin and its separate controller component collect rich environmental sensor data. The data analysis and ContextIO’s design considers collected data particularly about magnetometer, ambient light and GSM cellular signal strength. We manually derive thresholds in the data that can be used in combination to infer whether a device is indoor or outdoor. ContextIO uses the same thresholds to infer the state in real time.
This thesis contributes an Android tool for inferring the device’s indoor/outdoor status, an open dataset that other researchers can use in their work and an analysis of the collected sensor data for environmental indoor/outdoor state detection.Tiivistelmä. Yksi jokapaikan tietotekniikan tutkimuskysymyksistä keskittyy selvittämään onko laitteen sijainti sisä- vai ulkotilassa. Etenkin uudet älypuhelimet pystyvät hyödyntämään tätä tietoa uudenlaisten palveluiden ja sovellusten kehittämisessä sekä vanhojen toiminnallisuuksien optimoinnissa.
Tämä diplomityö esittelee Android-käyttöjärjestelmällä toimiville puhelimille suunnatun työkalun nimeltään ContextIO. Työkalu yhdistelee älypuhelimen sensorien tuottamaa tietoa ja havaitsee laitteen siirtymisen eri sijaintiin sisä- ja ulkotilojen suhteen. ContextIO:n suunnittelu ja kehitystyö perustuvat data-analyysiin, jonka data kerättiin AWARE-sensorialustan liitännäisellä sekä erillisellä nimeämistyökalulla. Data-analyysi keskittyy magnetometrin, valosensorin sekä GSM-kentän voimakkuuden hyödyntämiseen paikantamisessa. Kerätystä datasta määriteltiin raja-arvot, joita yhdistelemällä voidaan varsin luotettavasti todeta laitteen sijainti sisä- ja ulkotilojen suhteen. Nämä raja-arvot luovat perustan ContextIO:n reaaliaikaiselle laitteen sijainnin määrittämiselle.
Tämän diplomityön pääasialliset tulokset ovat työkalu Android-pohjaisten älypuhelinten sijainnin määrittämiseen sisä- ja ulkotilojen suhteen, avoin datasetti, jota muut tutkijat voivat käyttää sekä sijainnin määrittämiseen keskittyvä data-analyysi
Low-Cost GNSS Simulators with Wireless Clock Synchronization for Indoor Positioning
In regions where global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) signals are
unavailable, such as underground areas and tunnels, GNSS simulators can be
deployed for transmitting simulated GNSS signals. Then, a GNSS receiver in the
simulator coverage outputs the position based on the received GNSS signals
(e.g., Global Positioning System (GPS) L1 signals in this study) transmitted by
the corresponding simulator. This approach provides periodic position updates
to GNSS users while deploying a small number of simulators without modifying
the hardware and software of user receivers. However, the simulator clock
should be synchronized to the GNSS satellite clock to generate almost identical
signals to the live-sky GNSS signals, which is necessary for seamless indoor
and outdoor positioning handover. The conventional clock synchronization method
based on the wired connection between each simulator and an outdoor GNSS
antenna causes practical difficulty and increases the cost of deploying the
simulators. This study proposes a wireless clock synchronization method based
on a private time server and time delay calibration. Additionally, we derived
the constraints for determining the optimal simulator coverage and separation
between adjacent simulators. The positioning performance of the proposed GPS
simulator-based indoor positioning system was demonstrated in the underground
testbed for a driving vehicle with a GPS receiver and a pedestrian with a
smartphone. The average position errors were 3.7 m for the vehicle and 9.6 m
for the pedestrian during the field tests with successful indoor and outdoor
positioning handovers. Since those errors are within the coverage of each
deployed simulator, it is confirmed that the proposed system with wireless
clock synchronization can effectively provide periodic position updates to
users where live-sky GNSS signals are unavailable.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Acces
MIMO Evolution toward 6G: End-User-Centric Collaborative MIMO
In 6G, the trend of transitioning from massive antenna elements to even more
massive ones is continued. However, installing additional antennas in the
limited space of user equipment (UE) is challenging, resulting in limited
capacity scaling gain for end users, despite network side support for
increasing numbers of antennas. To address this issue, we propose an
end-user-centric collaborative MIMO (UE-CoMIMO) framework that groups several
fixed or portable devices to provide a virtual abundance of antennas. This
article outlines how advanced L1 relays and conventional relays enable device
collaboration to offer diversity, rank, and localization enhancements. We
demonstrate through system-level simulations how the UE-CoMIMO approaches lead
to significant performance gains. Lastly, we discuss necessary research efforts
to make UE-CoMIMO available for 6G and future research directions.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. This work has been accepted in IEEE
