Application-Driven AI Paradigm for Human Action Recognition

Human action recognition in computer vision has been widely studied in recent years. However, most algorithms consider only certain action specially with even high computational cost. That is not suitable for practical applications with multiple actions to be identified with low computational cost. To meet various application scenarios, this paper presents a unified human action recognition framework composed of two modules, i.e., multi-form human detection and corresponding action classification. Among them, an open-source dataset is constructed to train a multi-form human detection model that distinguishes a human being's whole body, upper body or part body, and the followed action classification model is adopted to recognize such action as falling, sleeping or on-duty, etc. Some experimental results show that the unified framework is effective for various application scenarios. It is expected to be a new application-driven AI paradigm for human action recognition

Emotion is an important part of people's daily life, particularly relevant to the mental health of people. Emotional diagnosis is closely related to the nervous system, which can well reflect people's mental conditions in response to the surrounding environment or the development of various neurodegenerative diseases. Emotion recognition can help the medical diagnosis of mental health. In recent years, emotion recognition based on EEG has attracted the attention of many researchers accompanying with the continuous development of artificial intelligence and brain computer interface technology. In this paper, we carried out a comparison on the performance of three deep learning techniques on EEG classification, including DNN, CNN and CNN-LSTM. DEAP data set was used in our experiments. EEG signals were transformed from time domain to frequency domain first, and then features are extracted to classify emotions. From our research, it shows these deep learning techniques can achieve good accuracy on emotional diagnosis

Dual viewpoint passenger state classification using 3D CNNs

The rise of intelligent vehicle systems will lead to more human-machine interactions and so there is a need to create a bridge between the system and the actions and behaviours of the people inside the vehicle. In this paper, we propose a dual camera setup to monitor the actions and behaviour of vehicle passengers and a deep learning architecture which can utilise video data to classify a range of actions. The method incorporates two different views as input to a 3D convolutional network and uses transfer learning from other action recognition data. The performance of this method is evaluated using an in-vehicle dataset, which contains video recordings of people performing a range of common in-vehicle actions. We show that the combination of transfer learning and using dual viewpoints in a 3D action recognition network offers an increase in classification accuracy of action classes with distinct poses, e.g. mobile phone use and sleeping, whilst it does not apply as well for classifying those actions with small movements, such as talking and eating
