Deadweight calibration of pressure gages without contamination
Calibration of pressure gages is accomplished by use of fluid chamber in conjunction with conventional single chamber hydraulic deadweight tester. System eliminates cleaning of gages with liquid oxygen after tests and is simple to construct and operate
Single mode levitation and translation
A single frequency resonance mode is applied by a transducer to acoustically levitate an object within a chamber. This process allows smooth movement of the object and suppression of unwanted levitation modes that would urge the object to a different levitation position. A plunger forms one end of the chamber, and the frequency changes as the plunger moves. Acoustic energy is applied to opposite sides of the chamber, with the acoustic energy on opposite sides being substantially 180 degrees out of phase
First results from an aging test of a prototype RPC for the LHCb Muon System
Recent results of an aging test performed at the CERN Gamma Irradiation
Facility on a single--gap RPC prototype developed for the LHCb Muon System are
presented. The results are based on an accumulated charge of about 0.45
C/cm, corresponding to about 4 years of LHCb running at the highest
background rate. The performance of the chamber has been studied under several
photon flux values exploiting a muon beam. A degradation of the rate capability
above 1 kHz/cm is observed, which can be correlated to a sizeable increase
of resistivity of the chamber plates. An increase of the chamber dark current
is also observed. The chamber performance is found to fulfill the LHCb

Codistances of 3-spherical buildings
We show that a 3-spherical building in which each rank 2 residue is connected
far away from a chamber, and each rank 3 residue is simply 2-connected far away
from a chamber, admits a twinning (i.e., is one half of a twin building) as
soon as it admits a codistance, i.e., a twinning with a single chamber.Comment: 35 pages; revised after a referee's comment
ATLAS Monitored Drift Tube Chambers in E = 11 MeV Neutron Background
The influence of fast neutrons on the occupancy and the single tube
resolution of ATLAS muon drift detectors was investigated by exposing a chamber
built out of 3 layers of 3 short standard drift tubes to neutron flux-densities
of up to 16 kHz/cm2 at a neutron energy of E=11 MeV. Pulse shape capable NE213
scintillaton detectors and a calibrated BF3 neutron detector provided
monitoring of the neutron flux-density and energy. The sensitivity of the drift
chamber to the neutrons was measured to be 4*10-4 by comparing data sets with
and without neutron background. For the investigation of tracks of cosmic muons
two silicon-strip detectors above and underneath the chamber allow to compare
measured drift-radii with reference tracks. Alternatively, the single tube
resolution was determined using the triple-sum method. The comparison between
data with and without neutron irradiation shows only a marginal effect on the
resolution and little influence on the muon track reconstruction.Comment: 4 pages, 11 figures, conferenc

Single-hit resolution measurement with MEG II drift chamber prototypes
Drift chambers operated with helium-based gas mixtures represent a common
solution for tracking charged particles keeping the material budget in the
sensitive volume to a minimum. The drawback of this solution is the worsening
of the spatial resolution due to primary ionisation fluctuations, which is a
limiting factor for high granularity drift chambers like the MEG II tracker. We
report on the measurements performed on three different prototypes of the MEG
II drift chamber aimed at determining the achievable single-hit resolution. The
prototypes were operated with helium/isobutane gas mixtures and exposed to
cosmic rays, electron beams and radioactive sources. Direct measurements of the
single hit resolution performed with an external tracker returned a value of
110 m, consistent with the values obtained with indirect measurements
performed with the other prototypes.Comment: 18 pages, 18 figure
Inward electrostatic precipitation of interplanetary particles
An inward precipitator collects particles initially dispersed in a gas throughout either a cylindrical or spherical chamber onto a small central planchet. The instrument is effective for particle diameters greater than about 1 µm. One use is the collection of interplanetary dust particles which are stopped in a noble gas (xenon) by drag and ablation after perforating the wall of a thin-walled spacecraft-mounted chamber. First, the particles are positively charged for several seconds by the corona production of positive xenon ions from inward facing needles placed on the chamber wall. Then an electric field causes the particles to migrate toward the center of the instrument and onto the planchet. The collection time (of the order of hours for a 1 m radius spherical chamber) is greatly reduced by the use of optimally located screens which reapportion the electric field. Some of the electric field lines terminate on the wires of the screens so a fraction of the total number of particles in the chamber is lost. The operation of the instrument is demonstrated by experiments which show the migration of carbon soot particles with radius of approximately 1 µm in a 5-cm-diam cylindrical chamber with a single field enhancing screen toward a 3.2 mm central collection rod
Mini-clusters
Experimental results of mini-clusters observed in Chacaltaya emulsion chamber no.19 are summarized. The study was made on 54 single core shower upper and 91 shower clusters of E(gamma) 10 TeV from 30 families which are visible energy greater than 80 TeV and penetrate through both upper and lower detectors of the two-story chamber. The association of hadrons in mini-cluster is made clear from their penetrative nature and microscopic observation of shower continuation in lower chamber.
