Lifeworld Analysis
We argue that the analysis of agent/environment interactions should be
extended to include the conventions and invariants maintained by agents
throughout their activity. We refer to this thicker notion of environment as a
lifeworld and present a partial set of formal tools for describing structures
of lifeworlds and the ways in which they computationally simplify activity. As
one specific example, we apply the tools to the analysis of the Toast system
and show how versions of the system with very different control structures in
fact implement a common control structure together with different conventions
for encoding task state in the positions or states of objects in the

Exploiting simple corporate memory in iterative coalition games
Amongst the challenging problems that must be addressed in order to create increasingly automated electronic commerce systems are those which involve forming coalitions of agents to exploit a particular market opportunity. Furthermore economic systems are normally continuous dynamic systems generating many instances of the same or similar problems (the regular calls for tender, regular emergence of new markets etc.).The work described in this paper explores how simple forms of memory can be exploited by agents over time to guide decision making in iterative sequences of coalition formation problems enabling them to build up social knowledge in order to improve their own utility and the ability of the population to produce increasingly well suited coalitions for a simple call-for-tender economy.Postprint (published version
Knowledge Nodes: the Building Blocks of a Distributed Approach to Knowledge Management
Abstract: In this paper we criticise the objectivistic approach that underlies most current systems for Knowledge Management. We show that such an approach is incompatible with the very nature of what is to be managed (i.e., knowledge), and we argue that this may partially explain why most knowledge management systems are deserted by users. We propose a different approach - called distributed knowledge management - in which subjective and social (in a word, contextual) aspects of knowledge are seriously taken into account. Finally, we present a general technological architecture in which these ideas are implemented by introducing the concept of knowledge node
Towards a killer app for the Semantic Web
Killer apps are highly transformative technologies that create new markets and widespread patterns of behaviour. IT generally, and the Web in particular, has benefited from killer apps to create new networks of users and increase its value. The Semantic Web community on the other hand is still awaiting a killer app that proves the superiority of its technologies. There are certain features that distinguish killer apps from other ordinary applications. This paper examines those features in the context of the Semantic Web, in the hope that a better understanding of the characteristics of killer apps might encourage their consideration when developing Semantic Web applications

This chapter examines those features in the context of the semantic web, in the hope that a better understanding of the characteristics of killer apps might encourage their consideration when developing semantic web applications. Killer apps are highly tranformative technologies that create new e-commerce venues and widespread patterns of behaviour. Information technology, generally, and the Web, in particular, have benefited from killer apps to create new networks of users and increase its value. The semantic web community on the other hand is still awaiting a killer app that proves the superiority of its technologies. The authors hope that this chapter will help to highlight some of the common ingredients of killer apps in e-commerce, and discuss how such applications might emerge in the semantic web
