Photonic integration enabling new multiplexing concepts in optical board-to-board and rack-to-rack interconnects
New broadband applications are causing the datacenters to proliferate, raising the bar for higher interconnection speeds. So far, optical board-to-board and rack-to-rack interconnects relied primarily on low-cost commodity optical components assembled in a single package. Although this concept proved successful in the first generations of optical-interconnect modules, scalability is a daunting issue as signaling rates extend beyond 25 Gb/s. In this paper we present our work towards the development of two technology platforms for migration beyond Infiniband enhanced data rate (EDR), introducing new concepts in board-to-board and rack-to-rack interconnects.
The first platform is developed in the framework of MIRAGE European project and relies on proven VCSEL technology, exploiting the inherent cost, yield, reliability and power consumption advantages of VCSELs. Wavelength multiplexing, PAM-4 modulation and multi-core fiber (MCF) multiplexing are introduced by combining VCSELs with integrated Si and glass photonics as well as BiCMOS electronics. An in-plane MCF-to-SOI interface is demonstrated, allowing coupling from the MCF cores to 340x400 nm Si waveguides. Development of a low-power VCSEL driver with integrated feed-forward equalizer is reported, allowing PAM-4 modulation of a bandwidth-limited VCSEL beyond 25 Gbaud.
The second platform, developed within the frames of the European project PHOXTROT, considers the use of modulation formats of increased complexity in the context of optical interconnects. Powered by the evolution of DSP technology and towards an integration path between inter and intra datacenter traffic, this platform investigates optical interconnection system concepts capable to support 16QAM 40GBd data traffic, exploiting the advancements of silicon and polymer technologies
Coherent terabit communications with microresonator Kerr frequency combs
Optical frequency combs enable coherent data transmission on hundreds of
wavelength channels and have the potential to revolutionize terabit
communications. Generation of Kerr combs in nonlinear integrated microcavities
represents a particularly promising option enabling line spacings of tens of
GHz, compliant with wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) grids. However, Kerr
combs may exhibit strong phase noise and multiplet spectral lines, and this has
made high-speed data transmission impossible up to now. Recent work has shown
that systematic adjustment of pump conditions enables low phase-noise Kerr
combs with singlet spectral lines. Here we demonstrate that Kerr combs are
suited for coherent data transmission with advanced modulation formats that
pose stringent requirements on the spectral purity of the optical source. In a
first experiment, we encode a data stream of 392 Gbit/s on subsequent lines of
a Kerr comb using quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and 16-state quadrature
amplitude modulation (16QAM). A second experiment shows feedback-stabilization
of a Kerr comb and transmission of a 1.44 Tbit/s data stream over a distance of
up to 300 km. The results demonstrate that Kerr combs can meet the highly
demanding requirements of multi-terabit/s coherent communications and thus
offer a solution towards chip-scale terabit/s transceivers
Reconfigurable photonic integrated mode (de)multiplexer for SDM fiber transmission
A photonic integrated circuit for mode multiplexing and demultiplexing in a
few-mode fiber is presented and demonstrated. Two 10 Gbit/s channels at the
same wavelength and polarization are simultaneously transmitted over modes LP01
and LP11a of a few-mode fiber exploiting the integrated mode MUX and DEMUX. The
proposed Indium-Phosphide-based circuits have a good coupling efficiency with
fiber modes with mode-dependant loss smaller than 1 dB. Measured mode
excitation cross-talk is as low as -20 dB and a channel cross-talk after
propagation and demultiplexing of -15 dB is achieved. An operational bandwidth
of the full transmission system of at least 10 nm is demonstrated. Both mode
MUX and DEMUX are fully reconfigurable and allow a dynamic switch of channel
routing in the transmission system
Integrated spatial multiplexing of heralded single photon sources
The non-deterministic nature of photon sources is a key limitation for single
photon quantum processors. Spatial multiplexing overcomes this by enhancing the
heralded single photon yield without enhancing the output noise. Here the
intrinsic statistical limit of an individual source is surpassed by spatially
multiplexing two monolithic silicon correlated photon pair sources,
demonstrating a 62.4% increase in the heralded single photon output without an
increase in unwanted multi-pair generation. We further demonstrate the
scalability of this scheme by multiplexing photons generated in two waveguides
pumped via an integrated coupler with a 63.1% increase in the heralded photon
rate. This demonstration paves the way for a scalable architecture for
multiplexing many photon sources in a compact integrated platform and achieving
efficient two photon interference, required at the core of optical quantum
computing and quantum communication protocols.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, comments welcom
