Cavlectometry: Towards Holistic Reconstruction of Large Mirror Objects
We introduce a method based on the deflectometry principle for the
reconstruction of specular objects exhibiting significant size and geometric
complexity. A key feature of our approach is the deployment of an Automatic
Virtual Environment (CAVE) as pattern generator. To unfold the full power of
this extraordinary experimental setup, an optical encoding scheme is developed
which accounts for the distinctive topology of the CAVE. Furthermore, we devise
an algorithm for detecting the object of interest in raw deflectometric images.
The segmented foreground is used for single-view reconstruction, the background
for estimation of the camera pose, necessary for calibrating the sensor system.
Experiments suggest a significant gain of coverage in single measurements
compared to previous methods. To facilitate research on specular surface
reconstruction, we will make our data set publicly available
Solid deuterium surface degradation at ultracold neutron sources
Solid deuterium (sD_2) is used as an efficient converter to produce ultracold
neutrons (UCN). It is known that the sD_2 must be sufficiently cold, of high
purity and mostly in its ortho-state in order to guarantee long lifetimes of
UCN in the solid from which they are extracted into vacuum. Also the UCN
transparency of the bulk sD_2 material must be high because crystal
inhomogeneities limit the mean free path for elastic scattering and reduce the
extraction efficiency. Observations at the UCN sources at Paul Scherrer
Institute and at Los Alamos National Laboratory consistently show a decrease of
the UCN yield with time of operation after initial preparation or later
treatment (`conditioning') of the sD_2. We show that, in addition to the
quality of the bulk sD_2, the quality of its surface is essential. Our
observations and simulations support the view that the surface is deteriorating
due to a build-up of D_2 frost-layers under pulsed operation which leads to
strong albedo reflections of UCN and subsequent loss. We report results of UCN
yield measurements, temperature and pressure behavior of deuterium during
source operation and conditioning, and UCN transport simulations. This,
together with optical observations of sD_2 frost formation on initially
transparent sD_2 in offline studies with pulsed heat input at the North
Carolina State University UCN source results in a consistent description of the
UCN yield decrease.Comment: 15 pages, 22 figures, accepted by EPJ-
Three-dimensional scanning of specular and diffuse metallic surfaces using an infrared technique
For the past two decades, the need for three-dimensional (3-D) scanning of industrial objects has increased significantly and many experimental techniques and commercial solutions have been proposed. However, difficulties remain for the acquisition of optically non-cooperative surfaces, such as transparent or specular surfaces. To address highly reflective metallic surfaces, we propose the extension of a technique that was originally dedicated to glass objects. In contrast to conventional active triangulation techniques that measure the reflection of visible radiation, we measure the thermal emission of a surface, which is locally heated by a laser source. Considering the thermophysical properties of metals, we present a simulation model of heat exchanges that are induced by the process, helping to demonstrate its feasibility on specular metallic surfaces and predicting the settings of the system. With our experimental device, we have validated the theoretical modeling and computed some 3-D point clouds from specular surfaces of various geometries. Furthermore, a comparison of our results with those of a conventional system on specular and diffuse parts will highlight that the accuracy of the measurement no longer depends on the roughness of the surface
Towards dynamic camera calibration for constrained flexible mirror imaging
Flexible mirror imaging systems consisting of a perspective
camera viewing a scene reflected in a flexible mirror can provide direct control over image field-of-view and resolution. However, calibration of such systems is difficult due to the vast range of possible mirror shapes
and the flexible nature of the system. This paper proposes the fundamentals of a dynamic calibration approach for flexible mirror imaging systems by examining the constrained case of single dimensional flexing.
The calibration process consists of an initial primary calibration stage followed by in-service dynamic calibration. Dynamic calibration uses a
linear approximation to initialise a non-linear minimisation step, the result of which is the estimate of the mirror surface shape. The method is
easier to implement than existing calibration methods for flexible mirror imagers, requiring only two images of a calibration grid for each dynamic
calibration update. Experimental results with both simulated and real data are presented that demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed approach
Photometric stereo for strong specular highlights
Photometric stereo (PS) is a fundamental technique in computer vision known
to produce 3-D shape with high accuracy. The setting of PS is defined by using
several input images of a static scene taken from one and the same camera
position but under varying illumination. The vast majority of studies in this
3-D reconstruction method assume orthographic projection for the camera model.
In addition, they mainly consider the Lambertian reflectance model as the way
that light scatters at surfaces. So, providing reliable PS results from real
world objects still remains a challenging task. We address 3-D reconstruction
by PS using a more realistic set of assumptions combining for the first time
the complete Blinn-Phong reflectance model and perspective projection. To this
end, we will compare two different methods of incorporating the perspective
projection into our model. Experiments are performed on both synthetic and real
world images. Note that our real-world experiments do not benefit from
laboratory conditions. The results show the high potential of our method even
for complex real world applications such as medical endoscopy images which may
include high amounts of specular highlights
