Separate Compilation for Synchronous Modules
Synchronous models are useful for designing real-time embedded systems because they provide timing control and deterministic concurrency. However, the semantics of such models usually require an entire system to be compiled at once to analyze the dependencies among modules. The alternative is to write modules that can respond when the values of some of their inputs are unknown, a tedious and error-prone process. We present a compilation technique that allows a programmer to describe synchronous modules without having to consider undefined inputs. Our algorithm transforms such a description into code that does as much as it can with undefined inputs, allowing modules to be compiled separately and assembled later. We implemented our technique in a compiler for the Esterel language and present results that show the technique does not impose a substantial overhead

Silicon compilation
Silicon compilation is a term used for many different purposes. In this paper we define silicon compilation as a mapping from some higher level description into layout. We define the basic issues in structural and behavioral silicon compilation and some possible solutions to those issues. Finally, we define the concept of an intelligent silicon compiler in which the compiler evaluates the quality of the generated design and attempts to improve it if it is not satisfactory

EXTEND-L : an input language for extensible register transfer compilation
This report discusses the model and input language for EXTEND, a synthesis system that permits extensible register transfer synthesis. EXTEND-L fills the need for a language that bridges the gap between existing behavioral input descriptions, which are too abstract, and structural schematics, which cannot capture the high-level behavior. The report first discusses previous work in behavioral synthesis and summarizes the deficiencies of these behavioral specifications. The report then describes the proposed langauge in detail, and concludes with a few examples that show its utility
Modular Compilation of a Synchronous Language
Synchronous languages rely on formal methods to ease the development of applications in an efficient and reusable way. Formal methods have been advocated as a means of increasing the reliability of systems, especially those which are safety or business critical. It is still difficult to develop automatic specification and verification tools due to limitations like state explosion, undecidability, etc... In this work, we design a new specification model based on a reactive synchronous approach. Then, we benefit from a formal framework well suited to perform compilation and formal validation of systems. In practice, we design and implement a special purpose language (LE) and its two semantics~: the ehavioral semantics helps us to define a program by the set of its behaviors and avoid ambiguousness in programs' interpretation; the execution equational semantics allows the modular compilation of programs into software and hardware targets (c code, vhdl code, fpga synthesis, observers). Our approach is pertinent considering the two main requirements of critical realistic applications~: the modular compilation allows us to deal with large systems, the model-based approach provides us with formal validation

Behavioral synthesis from VHDL using structured modeling
This dissertation describes work in behavioral synthesis involving the development of a VHDL Synthesis System VSS which accepts a VHDL behavioral input specification and performs technology independent synthesis to generate a circuit netlist of generic components. The VHDL language is used for input and output descriptions. An intermediate representation which incorporates signal typing and component attributes simplifies compilation and facilitates design optimization.A Structured Modeling methodology has been developed to suggest standard VHDL modeling practices for synthesis. Structured modeling provides recommendations for the use of available VHDL description styles so that optimal designs will be synthesized.A design composed of generic components is synthesized from the input description through a process of Graph Compilation, Graph Criticism, and Design Compilation. Experiments were performed to demonstrate the effects of different modeling styles on the quality of the design produced by VSS. Several alternative VHDL models were examined for each benchmark, illustrating the improvements in design quality achieved when Structured Modeling guidelines were followed
