    Towards Autoencoding Variational Inference for Aspect-based Opinion Summary

    Aspect-based Opinion Summary (AOS), consisting of aspect discovery and sentiment classification steps, has recently been emerging as one of the most crucial data mining tasks in e-commerce systems. Along this direction, the LDA-based model is considered as a notably suitable approach, since this model offers both topic modeling and sentiment classification. However, unlike traditional topic modeling, in the context of aspect discovery it is often required some initial seed words, whose prior knowledge is not easy to be incorporated into LDA models. Moreover, LDA approaches rely on sampling methods, which need to load the whole corpus into memory, making them hardly scalable. In this research, we study an alternative approach for AOS problem, based on Autoencoding Variational Inference (AVI). Firstly, we introduce the Autoencoding Variational Inference for Aspect Discovery (AVIAD) model, which extends the previous work of Autoencoding Variational Inference for Topic Models (AVITM) to embed prior knowledge of seed words. This work includes enhancement of the previous AVI architecture and also modification of the loss function. Ultimately, we present the Autoencoding Variational Inference for Joint Sentiment/Topic (AVIJST) model. In this model, we substantially extend the AVI model to support the JST model, which performs topic modeling for corresponding sentiment. The experimental results show that our proposed models enjoy higher topic coherent, faster convergence time and better accuracy on sentiment classification, as compared to their LDA-based counterparts.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figure

    Understanding user behavior aspects on emergency mobile applications during emergency communications using NLP and text mining techniques

    Abstract. The use of mobile devices has been skyrocketing in our society. Users can access and share any type of information in a timely manner through these devices using different social media applications. This enabled users to increase their awareness of ongoing events such as election campaigns, sports updates, movie releases, disaster occurrences, and studies. The attractiveness, affordability, and two-way communication capabilities empowered these mobile devices that support various social media platforms to be central to emergency communication as well. This makes a mobile-based emergency application an attractive communication tool during emergencies. The emergence of mobile-based emergency communication has intrigued us to learn about the user behavior related to the usage of these applications. Our study was mainly conducted on emergency apps in Nordic countries such as Finland, Sweden, and Norway. To understand the user objects regarding the usage of emergency mobile applications we leveraged various Natural Language Processing and Text Mining techniques. VADER sentiment tool was used to predict and track users’ review polarity of a particular application over time. Lately, to identify factors that affect users’ sentiments, we employed topic modeling techniques such as the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model. This model identifies various themes discussed in the user reviews and the result of each theme will be represented by the weighted sum of words in the corpus. Even though LDA succeeds in highlighting the user-related factors, it fails to identify the aspects of the user, and the topic definition from the LDA model is vague. Hence we leveraged Aspect Based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA) methods to extract the user aspects from the user reviews. To perform this task we consider fine-tuning DeBERTa (a variant of the BERT model). BERT is a Bidirectional Encoder Representation of transformer architecture which allows the model to learn the context in the text. Following this, we performed a sentence pair sentiment classification task using different variants of BERT. Later, we dwell on different sentiments to highlight the factors and the categories that impact user behavior most by leveraging the Empath categorization technique. Finally, we construct a word association by considering different Ontological vocabularies related to mobile applications and emergency response and management systems. The insights from the study can be used to identify the user aspect terms, predict the sentiment of the aspect term in the review provided, and find how the aspect term impacts the user perspective on the usage of mobile emergency applications

    Latent sentiment model for weakly-supervised cross-lingual sentiment classification

    In this paper, we present a novel weakly-supervised method for crosslingual sentiment analysis. In specific, we propose a latent sentiment model (LSM) based on latent Dirichlet allocation where sentiment labels are considered as topics. Prior information extracted from English sentiment lexicons through machine translation are incorporated into LSM model learning, where preferences on expectations of sentiment labels of those lexicon words are expressed using generalized expectation criteria. An efficient parameter estimation procedure using variational Bayes is presented. Experimental results on the Chinese product reviews show that the weakly-supervised LSM model performs comparably to supervised classifiers such as Support vector Machines with an average of 81% accuracy achieved over a total of 5484 review documents. Moreover, starting with a generic sentiment lexicon, the LSM model is able to extract highly domainspecific polarity words from text

    Automatically extracting polarity-bearing topics for cross-domain sentiment classification

    Joint sentiment-topic (JST) model was previously proposed to detect sentiment and topic simultaneously from text. The only supervision required by JST model learning is domain-independent polarity word priors. In this paper, we modify the JST model by incorporating word polarity priors through modifying the topic-word Dirichlet priors. We study the polarity-bearing topics extracted by JST and show that by augmenting the original feature space with polarity-bearing topics, the in-domain supervised classifiers learned from augmented feature representation achieve the state-of-the-art performance of 95% on the movie review data and an average of 90% on the multi-domain sentiment dataset. Furthermore, using feature augmentation and selection according to the information gain criteria for cross-domain sentiment classification, our proposed approach performs either better or comparably compared to previous approaches. Nevertheless, our approach is much simpler and does not require difficult parameter tuning

    SSAM : towards supervised sentiment and aspect modeling on different levels of labeling

    Abstract In recent years people want to express their opinion on every online service or product, and there are now a huge number of opinions on the social media, online stores and blogs. However, most of the opinions are presented in plain text and thus require a powerful method to analyze this volume of unlabeled reviews to obtain information about relevant details in minimum time and with a high accuracy. In this paper we propose a supervised model to analyze large unlabeled opinion data sets. This model has two phases: preprocessing and a Supervised Sentiment and Aspect Model (SSAM) which is an extended version of Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) Model. In the preprocessing phase we input thousands of unlabeled opinions and received a set of (key, value) pairs in which a key holds a word or an opinion and a value holds supervised information such as a sentiment label of this word or opinion. After that we give these pairs to the proposed SSAM algorithm, which incorporates different levels of supervised information such as (document and sentence) levels or (document and term) levels of supervised information, to extract and cluster aspects related to a sentiment label and also classify opinions based on their sentiments. We applied SSAM to reviews of electronic devices and books from Amazon. The experiments show that the aspects found by SSAM capture more important aspects that are closely coupled with a sentiment label, and also in sentiment classification SSAM outperforms other topic models and comes close to supervised methods

    Sentiment Analysis using an ensemble of Feature Selection Algorithms

    To determine the opinion of any person experiencing any services or buying any product, the usage of Sentiment Analysis, a continuous research in the field of text mining, is a common practice. It is a process of using computation to identify and categorize opinions expressed in a piece of text. Individuals post their opinion via reviews, tweets, comments or discussions which is our unstructured information. Sentiment analysis gives a general conclusion of audits which benefit clients, individuals or organizations for decision making. The primary point of this paper is to perform an ensemble approach on feature reduction methods identified with natural language processing and performing the analysis based on the results. An ensemble approach is a process of combining two or more methodologies. The feature reduction methods used are Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for feature extraction and Pearson Chi squared statistical test for feature selection. The fundamental commitment of this paper is to experiment whether combined use of cautious feature determination and existing classification methodologies can yield better accuracy

    Beyond Sentiment: The Manifold of Human Emotions

    Sentiment analysis predicts the presence of positive or negative emotions in a text document. In this paper we consider higher dimensional extensions of the sentiment concept, which represent a richer set of human emotions. Our approach goes beyond previous work in that our model contains a continuous manifold rather than a finite set of human emotions. We investigate the resulting model, compare it to psychological observations, and explore its predictive capabilities. Besides obtaining significant improvements over a baseline without manifold, we are also able to visualize different notions of positive sentiment in different domains.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure
