Implementing RFID Automation into a Small Scale Aircraft Maintenance System

The purpose of this study was to explore and identify where technology automation could be used to reduce time and wasted labor in aircraft inventory and maintenance processes. The research used passive RFID AutoID technology due to its capabilities in data logging and relatively hands-off, passive use. The Purdue University’s aircraft maintenance system operates under old time card systems with paper inspection, check outs of tools, and non-routine inspections, contributing to long search times when looking for maintenance problems or lost inventory that may have happened up to and over a year ago. Furthermore, there are general inefficiencies due to locating forms and filling out paperwork. This study evaluated the effectiveness of RFID technology in an updated process map of tool / part usage, while providing a proof-of-concept RFID-enabled system to track aircraft inventory parts and tools. The study collected information about tool usage and inventory accountability. The use of a database to facilitate this data tracking would have allowed easy access and analysis for maintenance managers to better identify tool use with individual technicians. The solution was to RFID tag a selected test set of specialized aircraft maintenance tools found in the tool room at Hangar 6 in Purdue University’s airport that require check out (as well as aircraft inventory parts), utilize the RFID tunnel and Alien RFID system at Purdue University’s Supply Chain Lab, attach RFID tags to mock name badges, and allow for tracking simply by walking through the door or near the tunnel and checking if the tool was recorded by the RFID reader for that particular person. This resulted in a study of the “before case” process map to the “after case” process map, and whether any steps were removed or added

The Autolite case : an economic analysis of a vertical merger and potential competition

On April 12, 1961, the Ford Motor Company purchased the following assets from the Electric Autolite Company of Toledo, Ohio: 1. Autolite's only spark plug plant in the United States; 2. One of its six battery plants; 3. The Autolite trade name and trademark; and 4. All patent and license agreements covering the manufacture of spark plugs and batteries. In addition, Ford obtained limited distribution rights in the form of Autolite's nationwide franchises. These included distributors, jobbers, and dealers which were involved in the sales of automotive replacement parts; it also included the sales organization that served these accounts. Finally, a written agreement was contracted between the two firms calling for Autolite to furnish certain spark plugs, batteries, and ignition parts to Ford for a period not exceeding three years from the date of purchase

2016 Formula SAE Vehicle Electrical Systems Design

    Get PDF
The 2016 Formula SAE vehicle electrical systems design project provided enhanced electrical systems for the 2016 FSAE vehicle that competed in the Michigan 2016 FSAE competition. This report details the design of the electrical systems implemented on the vehicle including wireless telemetry, steering wheel, wheel sensors, and vehicle dynamics control systems. This report also outlines the design approach and methodology for the systems on the vehicle. Finally, the processes of how the systems were constructed and tested are documented along with recommendations for future work and design

    Finland-India Business Prospects 2007-2017

Finland-India Economic Relations were researched for the first time in a study that analysed mutual trade and investment potential through the lens of revealed comparative advantage and identified profitably tradable goods at 4-digit and 8-digit disaggregated levels in the standard international trade classification (Mathur, 1998). This study was made freely available on the world wide web for five years through http:// www.uta.fi/kati as part of longitudinal action research to study how small and large players would take advantage of this freebie. This paper provides initial results of a sequel study initiated in 2005 to understand what happened thereafter, whether trade grew, and to analyse how trade could diversify from identification of new opportunities for product-services linkages after the expiry of the transitional period that brought GATS into effect in 2005. Finlands share in Indian imports and exports has grown rapidly and exponentially and the prospects are vast but the potential realised by 2007 remains considerably untapped and far below comparable figures for other EU countries. This study emphasises the need for policy research on institutional barriers to design new gateways beyond an increased frequency of contact between people from the two countries. The conclusion that robust bridges could be built through tripartite fora comprising business, government and academia points to the need for new institutionalities and deepening research studies, some of which initiated as part of the Finland-India Economic Relations project, are at various stages of progress and expected to be completed during 2007-2010.
