Multiuser MIMO-OFDM for Next-Generation Wireless Systems
This overview portrays the 40-year evolution of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) research. The amelioration of powerful multicarrier OFDM arrangements with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems has numerous benefits, which are detailed in this treatise. We continue by highlighting the limitations of conventional detection and channel estimation techniques designed for multiuser MIMO OFDM systems in the so-called rank-deficient scenarios, where the number of users supported or the number of transmit antennas employed exceeds the number of receiver antennas. This is often encountered in practice, unless we limit the number of users granted access in the base station’s or radio port’s coverage area. Following a historical perspective on the associated design problems and their state-of-the-art solutions, the second half of this treatise details a range of classic multiuser detectors (MUDs) designed for MIMO-OFDM systems and characterizes their achievable performance. A further section aims for identifying novel cutting-edge genetic algorithm (GA)-aided detector solutions, which have found numerous applications in wireless communications in recent years. In an effort to stimulate the cross pollination of ideas across the machine learning, optimization, signal processing, and wireless communications research communities, we will review the broadly applicable principles of various GA-assisted optimization techniques, which were recently proposed also for employment inmultiuser MIMO OFDM. In order to stimulate new research, we demonstrate that the family of GA-aided MUDs is capable of achieving a near-optimum performance at the cost of a significantly lower computational complexity than that imposed by their optimum maximum-likelihood (ML) MUD aided counterparts. The paper is concluded by outlining a range of future research options that may find their way into next-generation wireless systems
Iterative Joint Channel Estimation and Symbol Detection for Multi-User MIMO OFDM
Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems have recently attracted substantial research interest. However, compared to Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) systems, channel estimation in the MIMO scenario becomes more challenging, owing to the increased number of independent transmitter-receiver links to be estimated. In the context of the Bell LAyered Space-Time architecture (BLAST) or Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) multi-user MIMO OFDM literature, no channel estimation technique allows the number of users to be higher than the number of receiver antennas, which is often referred to as an “overloaded” scenario. In this contribution we propose a new Genetic Algorithm (GA) assisted iterative joint channel estimation and multiuser detection approach for MIMO SDMA-OFDM systems, which exhibits a robust performance in the above-mentioned overloaded scenario. Furthermore, GA-aided Multi-User Detection (MUD) techniques found in the literature can only provide a hard-decision output, while the proposed GA is capable of providing “soft” outputs, hence achieving an improved performance with the aid of channel decoders. Finally, a range of simulation results are provided to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme
Semi-blind adaptive spatial equalisation for MIMO systems with high-order QAM signalling
This contribution investigates semi-blind adaptive spatial filtering or equalisation for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems that employ high-throughput quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signalling. A minimum number of training symbols, equal to the number of receivers (we assume that the number of transmitters is no more than that of receivers), are first utilized to provide a rough least squares channel estimate of the system's MIMO channel matrix for the initialization of the spatial equalizers' weight vectors. A constant modulus algorithm aided soft decision-directed blind algorithm, originally derived for blind equalization of single-input single-output and single-input multiple-output systems employing high-order QAM signalling, is then extended to adapt the spatial equalizers for MIMO systems. This semi-blind scheme has a low computational complexity, and our simulation results demonstrate that it converges fast to the minimum mean-square-error spatial equalization solution
Low Complexity Blind Equalization for OFDM Systems with General Constellations
This paper proposes a low-complexity algorithm for blind equalization of data
in OFDM-based wireless systems with general constellations. The proposed
algorithm is able to recover data even when the channel changes on a
symbol-by-symbol basis, making it suitable for fast fading channels. The
proposed algorithm does not require any statistical information of the channel
and thus does not suffer from latency normally associated with blind methods.
We also demonstrate how to reduce the complexity of the algorithm, which
becomes especially low at high SNR. Specifically, we show that in the high SNR
regime, the number of operations is of the order O(LN), where L is the cyclic
prefix length and N is the total number of subcarriers. Simulation results
confirm the favorable performance of our algorithm
SVM-Based Channel Estimation and Data Detection for One-Bit Massive MIMO systems
The use of low-resolution Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) is a practical solution for reducing cost and power consumption for massive Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems. However, the severe nonlinearity of low-resolution ADCs causes significant distortions in the received signals and makes the channel estimation and data detection tasks much more challenging. In this paper, we show how Support Vector Machine (SVM), a well-known supervised-learning technique in machine learning, can be exploited to provide efficient and robust channel estimation and data detection in massive MIMO systems with one-bit ADCs. First, the problem of channel estimation for uncorrelated channels is formulated as a conventional SVM problem. The objective function of this SVM problem is then modified for estimating spatially correlated channels. Next, a two-stage detection algorithm is proposed where SVM is further exploited in the first stage. The performance of the proposed data detection method is very close to that of Maximum-Likelihood (ML) data detection when the channel is perfectly known. We also propose an SVM-based joint Channel Estimation and Data Detection (CE-DD) method, which makes use of both the to-be-decoded data vectors and the pilot data vectors to improve the estimation and detection performance. Finally, an extension of the proposed methods to OFDM systems with frequency-selective fading channels is presented. Simulation results show that the proposed methods are efficient and robust, and also outperform existing ones
Cyclic Prefix-Free MC-CDMA Arrayed MIMO Communication Systems
The objective of this thesis is to investigate MC-CDMA MIMO systems where
the antenna array geometry is taken into consideration. In most MC-CDMA
systems, cyclic pre xes, which reduce the spectral e¢ ciency, are used. In order
to improve the spectral efficiency, this research study is focused on cyclic pre x-
free MC-CDMA MIMO architectures.
Initially, space-time wireless channel models are developed by considering the
spatio-temporal mechanisms of the radio channel, such as multipath propaga-
tion. The spatio-temporal channel models are based on the concept of the array
manifold vector, which enables the parametric modelling of the channel.
The array manifold vector is extended to the multi-carrier space-time array
(MC-STAR) manifold matrix which enables the use of spatio-temporal signal
processing techniques. Based on the modelling, a new cyclic pre x-free MC-
CDMA arrayed MIMO communication system is proposed and its performance
is compared with a representative existing system. Furthermore, a MUSIC-type
algorithm is then developed for the estimation of the channel parameters of the
received signal.
This proposed cyclic pre x-free MC-CDMA arrayed MIMO system is then
extended to consider the effects of spatial diffusion in the wireless channel. Spatial
diffusion is an important channel impairment which is often ignored and the
failure to consider such effects leads to less than satisfactory performance. A
subspace-based approach is proposed for the estimation of the channel parameters
and spatial spread and reception of the desired signal.
Finally, the problem of joint optimization of the transmit and receive beam-
forming weights in the downlink of a cyclic pre x-free MC-CDMA arrayed MIMO
communication system is investigated. A subcarrier-cooperative approach is used
for the transmit beamforming so that there is greater flexibility in the allocation
of channel symbols. The resulting optimization problem, with a per-antenna
transmit power constraint, is solved by the Lagrange multiplier method and an
iterative algorithm is proposed
