    With the advancement in technology over the past decades, networks have become increasingly large and complex. In the meantime, cyberattacks have become highly sophisticated making them difficult to detect. These changes make securing a network more challenging than ever before. Hence, it is critical to prepare a comprehensive guide of network security management for students assist them in becoming network security professionals. The objective of this paper is to introduce a variety of techniques related to network security management, such as Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), event management, security policy management, risk management, access control, and remote monitoring. With the usage of these techniques, malicious activities from outsiders and misuse by insiders can be effectively monitored and managed. A network learning environment is proposed for students to practice network security management experiments. In addition, hands-on lab exercises are suggested. These activities will help students become familiar with the operations of network security management and allow them to further apply practical skills to protect networks

    A Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) is a collection of autonomous nodes or mobile devices that can arrange themselves in various ways and operate without strict network administration. Ensuring security in mobile ad hoc network is a challenging issue and most of the applications in mobile ad hoc networks involve group-oriented communication. In Mobile ad-hoc network, each node treated as a terminal and also acts as an intermediate router. In this scenario, multi-hop occurs for communication in mobile ad hoc network. There may be a possibility of threats and malicious nodes in between source and destination. Providing the security in MANET is entirely different from the traditional wired network. In the present scenario, various applications of the mobile ad hoc network have been proposed and issues are solved by using the cryptographic techniques. Mostly cryptographic techniques are used to provide the security to MANETs. Cryptographic techniques will not be efficient security mechanism if the key management is weak. The purpose of key management is to provide secure procedures for handling keys in the cryptographic technique. The responsibilities of key management include key generation, key distribution, and key maintenance. Several key management schemes have been introduced for MANETs. The Group key management scheme is an efficient method for key management in MANET. In group key management scheme, rekeying is used whenever a new node joins or existing node leaves from the group. In this paper, we propose a periodic rekeying method (PRK) and analyze the performance of LKH rekeying techniques in a group key management schemes. The symmetric encryption techniques are analyzed with different parameters, such as Throughput and Energy consumption.     abstract: Network Management is a critical process for an enterprise to configure and monitor the network devices using cost effective methods. It is imperative for it to be robust and free from adversarial or accidental security flaws. With the advent of cloud computing and increasing demands for centralized network control, conventional management protocols like Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) appear inadequate and newer techniques like Network Management Datastore Architecture (NMDA) design and Network Configuration (NETCONF) have been invented. However, unlike SNMP which underwent improvements concentrating on security, the new data management and storage techniques have not been scrutinized for the inherent security flaws. In this thesis, I identify several vulnerabilities in the widely used critical infrastructures which leverage the NMDA design. Software Defined Networking (SDN), a proponent of NMDA, heavily relies on its datastores to program and manage the network. I base my research on the security challenges put forth by the existing datastore’s design as implemented by the SDN controllers. The vulnerabilities identified in this work have a direct impact on the controllers like OpenDayLight, Open Network Operating System and their proprietary implementations (by CISCO, Ericsson, RedHat, Brocade, Juniper, etc). Using the threat detection methodology, I demonstrate how the NMDA-based implementations are vulnerable to attacks which compromise availability, integrity, and confidentiality of the network. I finally propose defense measures to address the security threats in the existing design and discuss the challenges faced while employing these countermeasures.Dissertation/ThesisMasters Thesis Computer Science 201

    Optical Network Security Management: Requirements, Architecture and Efficient Machine Learning Models for Detection of Evolving Threats [Invited]

    As the communication infrastructure that sustains critical societal services, optical networks need to function in a secure and agile way. Thus, cognitive and automated security management functionalities are needed, fueled by the proliferating machine learning (ML) techniques and compatible with common network control entities and procedures. Automated management of optical network security requires advancements both in terms of performance and efficiency of ML approaches for security diagnostics, as well as novel management architectures and functionalities. This paper tackles these challenges by proposing a novel functional block called Security Operation Center (SOC), describing its architecture, specifying key requirements on the supported functionalities and providing guidelines on its integration with optical layer controller. Moreover, to boost efficiency of ML-based security diagnostic techniques when processing high-dimensional optical performance monitoring data in the presence of previously unseen physical-layer attacks, we combine unsupervised and semi-supervised learning techniques with three different dimensionality reduction methods and analyze the resulting performance and trade-offs between ML accuracy and run time complexity
