Obtaining self-samples to diagnose curable sexually transmitted infections: a systematic review of patients' experiences
BACKGROUND:
Routine screening is key to sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention and control. Previous studies suggest that clinic-based screening programmes capture only a small proportion of people with STIs. Self-sampling using non- or minimally invasive techniques may be beneficial for those reluctant to actively engage with conventional sampling methods. We systematically reviewed studies of patients' experiences of obtaining self-samples to diagnose curable STIs.
METHODS:
We conducted an electronic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsychINFO, BNI, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews to identify relevant articles published in English between January 1980 and March 2014. Studies were included if participants self-sampled for the diagnosis of a curable STI and had specifically sought participants' opinions of their experience, acceptability, preferences, or willingness to self-sample.
RESULTS:
The initial search yielded 558 references. Of these, 45 studies met the inclusion criteria. Thirty-six studies assessed patients' acceptability and experiences of self-sampling. Pooled results from these studies shows that self-sampling is a highly acceptable method with 85% of patients reporting the method to be well received and acceptable. Twenty-eight studies reported on ease of self-sampling; the majority of patients (88%) in these studies found self-sampling an "easy" procedure. Self-sampling was favoured compared to clinician sampling, and home sampling was preferred to clinic-based sampling. Females and older participants were more accepting of self-sampling. Only a small minority of participants (13%) reported pain during self-sampling. Participants were willing to undergo self-sampling and recommend others. Privacy and safety were the most common concerns.
CONCLUSION:
Self-sampling for diagnostic testing is well accepted with the majority having a positive experience and willingness to use again. Standardization of self-sampling procedures and rigorous validation of outcome measurement will lead to better comparability across studies. Future studies need to conduct rigorous economic evaluations of self-sampling to inform policy development for the management of STI
Sampling design may obscure species–area relationships in landscape-scale field studies
We investigated 1) the role of area per se in explaining anuran species richness on reservoir forest islands, after controlling for several confounding factors. We also assessed 2) how sampling design affects the inferential power of island species–area relationships (ISARs) aiming to 3) provide guidelines to yield reliable estimates of area-induced species losses in patchy systems. We surveyed anurans with autonomous recording units at 151 plots located on 74 islands and four continuous forest sites at the Balbina Hydroelectric Reservoir landscape, central Brazilian Amazonia. We applied semi-log ISAR models to assess the effect of sampling design on the fit and slope of species–area curves. To do so, we subsampled our surveyed islands following both a 1) stratified and 2) non-stratified random selection of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 islands covering 1) the full range in island size (0.45–1699 ha) and 2) only islands smaller than 100 ha, respectively. We also compiled 25 datasets from the literature to assess the generality of our findings. Island size explained ca half of the variation in species richness. The fit and slope of species–area curves were affected mainly by the range in island size considered, and to a very small extent by the number of islands surveyed. In our literature review, all datasets covering a range of patch sizes larger than 300 ha yielded a positive ISAR, whereas the number of patches alone did not affect the detection of ISARs. We conclude that 1) area per se plays a major role in explaining anuran species richness on forest islands within an Amazonian anthropogenic archipelago; 2) the inferential power of island species–area relationships is severely degraded by sub-optimal sampling designs; 3) at least 10 habitat patches spanning three orders of magnitude in size should be surveyed to yield reliable species–area estimates in patchy systems
Worse Than Spam: Issues In Sampling Software Developers
Background: Reaching out to professional software developers is a crucial
part of empirical software engineering research. One important method to
investigate the state of practice is survey research. As drawing a random
sample of professional software developers for a survey is rarely possible,
researchers rely on various sampling strategies. Objective: In this paper, we
report on our experience with different sampling strategies we employed,
highlight ethical issues, and motivate the need to maintain a collection of key
demographics about software developers to ease the assessment of the external
validity of studies. Method: Our report is based on data from two studies we
conducted in the past. Results: Contacting developers over public media proved
to be the most effective and efficient sampling strategy. However, we not only
describe the perspective of researchers who are interested in reaching goals
like a large number of participants or a high response rate, but we also shed
light onto ethical implications of different sampling strategies. We present
one specific ethical guideline and point to debates in other research
communities to start a discussion in the software engineering research

Analysis of SPDEs Arising in Path Sampling Part I: The Gaussian Case
In many applications it is important to be able to sample paths of SDEs
conditional on observations of various kinds. This paper studies SPDEs which
solve such sampling problems. The SPDE may be viewed as an infinite dimensional
analogue of the Langevin SDE used in finite dimensional sampling. Here the
theory is developed for conditioned Gaussian processes for which the resulting
SPDE is linear. Applications include the Kalman-Bucy filter/smoother. A
companion paper studies the nonlinear case, building on the linear analysis
provided here
On conditional sampling for turbulent flow studies
The conditional sampling technique is analyzed as a weighted time average for turbulent flow. The various conditional averages are obtained by using different types of weighting functions. A second averaging relation is obtained between the conventional averages and the conditional averages. A few examples are given in which simplified expressions are used
Nyquist Frequency in Sequentially Sampled Data
This paper studies the sequential sampling scheme as a solution to the problem of aliasing, where the sampling interval is restricted to a minimum allowable value. Sequential sampling is analyzed and it is proved that when the sampling ratio is an integral number, the associated spectral estimates give a Nyquist frequency .
