Toolpaths Programming in an Intelligent Step-NC Manufacturing Context

    Get PDF
The current language for CNC programming is G-code which dates from the beginning of the eighties with the norm ISO 6983. With the new technologies, G-code becomes obsolete. It presents drawbacks that create a rupture in the numerical chain at the manufacturing step. A new standard, STEP-NC, aims to overtake these lacks. A STEP-NC file includes all the information for manufacturing, as geometry description of the entities, workplan, machining strategies, tools, etc. For rough pocket milling, the ISO norms propose different kind of classical strategies as bidirectional, parallel or spiral contour, etc. This paper describes a new way of toolpath programming by the repetition of a pattern all along a guide curve. It presents several advantages as building fastness and easiness. The integration of pattern strategies in STEP-NC standard is an other step for the development of these strategies but also for the enrichment of STEP-NC possibilities. A complete STEP-NC numerical chain was built, integrating these pattern strategies. The implementation of this approach of building pattern strategies was made by the development of tools for the complete manufacturing cycle, from the CAD file to the machined part. Several application cases were experimented on machine tool to validate this approach and the efficiency of the developped tools

This paper presents a practical method and a new haptic model to support manipulations of bones and their segments during the planning of a surgical operation in a virtual environment using a haptic interface. To perform an effective dental surgery it is important to have all the operation related information of the patient available beforehand in order to plan the operation and avoid any complications. A haptic interface with a virtual and accurate patient model to support the planning of bone cuts is therefore critical, useful and necessary for the surgeons. The system proposed uses DICOM images taken from a digital tomography scanner and creates a mesh model of the filtered skull, from which the jaw bone can be isolated for further use. A novel solution for cutting the bones has been developed and it uses the haptic tool to determine and define the bone-cutting plane in the bone, and this new approach creates three new meshes of the original model. Using this approach the computational power is optimized and a real time feedback can be achieved during all bone manipulations. During the movement of the mesh cutting, a novel friction profile is predefined in the haptical system to simulate the force feedback feel of different densities in the bone

A framework for green manufacturing practicies in small and medium enterprises in Malaysia

    Get PDF
Green Manufacturing Practices (GrMP) is a term used to describe manufacturing practices that do not harm the environment during any part of the manufacturing process. It emphasizes the use of processes that do not pollute the environment or harm consumers, employees, or other members of the community. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are moving toward sustainable alternatives through GrMP method. It stresses on critical factors such as organisational style, eco-knowledge, business environment, society influences, supply chain management and technology network. Large size industries are more compelled to do so compared to SMEs due to the fact that they are more influential with better organizational management and good financial stability compared to SMEs. However, SMEs are trying to adapt GrMP as a mandatory process, but lack of proper framework which guide them for implementation. Therefore, this study developes the framework of GrMP for local SMEs. The study involves enablers and barriers in implementing GrMP from previous literatures. This work formulate a framework based on relationship between criticals factors with enablers and barriers. 59 of respondents from local industries in Malaysia were selected as respondents based on six of critical factors divided into two parts which are enablers and barriers. The questionnaire are designed based on this. Survey were evaluated by using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23, in terms of correlation, reliability, central tendency and variability testing. The finding on this study in the term of framework will help SMEs to implementing GrMP. Framework formulate relates the critical factors from previous literature and enablers and barriers from survey based on perception of industries expert. GrMP for SMEs are the first step of environmental awareness and ecological responsibilties

Preliminary investigation on homogenization of the thickness distribution in hole-flanging by SPIF

    Get PDF
A drawback of the hole-flanging process by single-stage SPIF is the non-uniform thickness obtained along the flange. Multi-stage strategies have been used to improve it, however they increase notably the manufacturing time. This work presents a preliminary study of the tool paths for a hole-flanging process by SPIF in two stages. An intermediate geometry of the piece is proposed from the analysis of the thickness distribution observed in previous single-stage process. A simple optimization procedure is used to automate the intermediate part design, the NC code generation for the tool path and the validation of the optimal forming strategy by means of FEA

The system carries out several stages of process planning, such as identification of the pairs of feature/tool that satisfy the required conditions, generation of the possible process plans from identified tools/machine pairs, and selection of the most interesting process plans considering the economical or timing indicators. The suitable processes plans are selected according to the acceptable range of quality, time and cost factors. Each process plan is represented in the tree format by the information items corresponding to their CNC Machine, required tools characteristics, times (machining, setup, preparatory) and the required machining sequences. The process simulation module is provided to demonstrate the different sequences of machining. After selection of suitable process plan, the G-code language used by CNC machines is generated automatically. This approach is validated through a case

An extensible manufacturing resource model for process integration

    Get PDF
Driven by industrial needs and enabled by process technology and information technology, enterprise integration is rapidly shifting from information integration to process integration to improve overall performance of enterprises. Traditional resource models are established based on the needs of individual applications. They cannot effectively serve process integration which needs resources to be represented in a unified, comprehensive and flexible way to meet the needs of various applications for different business processes. This paper looks into this issue and presents a configurable and extensible resource model which can be rapidly reconfigured and extended to serve for different applications. To achieve generality, the presented resource model is established from macro level and micro level. A semantic representation method is developed to improve the flexibility and extensibility of the model

A comparative study between x-rays and gamma-rays irradiation on electrical characteristics of bipolar junction transistors (BJTS)

    Get PDF
Irradiation impact of gamma rays and X-rays on bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) in terms of electronic excitation due to transfer of energy and subsequent ionization, as well as energy transfer to atomic nuclei is studied using in-situ method. Comparison is made on the electrical characteristics of the devices under test (DUT) for various collecting current at two different operating mode. Both temporary and permanent damages in DUTs are found to be induced by energy transfer from the irradiation by gamma-rays and X-rays, depending upon total dose absorbed and current drive. Increased probability of recombination, due to creation of electron–hole pairs at the base region is found to be the most significant radiation damage in BJTs, as it leads to decrease in electron flux reaching the collector region
