Scene modelling using an adaptive mixture of Gaussians in colour and space
We present an integrated pixel segmentation and region
tracking algorithm, designed for indoor environments. Visual monitoring systems often use frame differencing techniques to independently classify each image pixel as either foreground or background. Typically, this level of processing does not take account of the global image structure, resulting in frequent misclassification.
We use an adaptive Gaussian mixture model in colour and space to represent background and foreground regions of the scene. This model is used to probabilistically classify observed pixel values, incorporating the global scene structure into pixel-level segmentation. We evaluate our system over 4 sequences and show that it successfully segments foreground pixels and tracks major foreground regions as they move through the scene
Incremental Learning of Nonparametric Bayesian Mixture Models
Clustering is a fundamental task in many vision applications.
To date, most clustering algorithms work in a
batch setting and training examples must be gathered in a
large group before learning can begin. Here we explore
incremental clustering, in which data can arrive continuously.
We present a novel incremental model-based clustering
algorithm based on nonparametric Bayesian methods,
which we call Memory Bounded Variational Dirichlet
Process (MB-VDP). The number of clusters are determined
flexibly by the data and the approach can be used to automatically
discover object categories. The computational requirements
required to produce model updates are bounded
and do not grow with the amount of data processed. The
technique is well suited to very large datasets, and we show
that our approach outperforms existing online alternatives
for learning nonparametric Bayesian mixture models
An Overview of Classifier Fusion Methods
A number of classifier fusion methods have been
recently developed opening an alternative approach
leading to a potential improvement in the
classification performance. As there is little theory of
information fusion itself, currently we are faced with
different methods designed for different problems and
producing different results. This paper gives an
overview of classifier fusion methods and attempts to
identify new trends that may dominate this area of
research in future. A taxonomy of fusion methods
trying to bring some order into the existing âpudding
of diversitiesâ is also provided

Sampling Methods for Unsupervised Learning
We present an algorithm to overcome the local maxima problem in estimating the parameters of mixture models. It combines existing approaches from both EM and a robust fitting algorithm, RANSAC, to give a data-driven stochastic learning scheme. Minimal subsets of data points, sufficient to constrain the parameters of the model, are drawn from proposal densities to discover new regions of high likelihood. The proposal densities are learnt using EM and bias the sampling toward promising solutions. The algorithm is computationally efficient, as well as effective
at escaping from local maxima. We compare it with alternative methods, including EM and RANSAC, on both challenging synthetic data and the computer vision problem of alpha-matting
