Solar hard X-ray imaging by means of Compressed Sensing and Finite Isotropic Wavelet Transform

This paper shows that compressed sensing realized by means of regularized deconvolution and the Finite Isotropic Wavelet Transform is effective and reliable in hard X-ray solar imaging. The method utilizes the Finite Isotropic Wavelet Transform with Meyer function as the mother wavelet. Further, compressed sensing is realized by optimizing a sparsity-promoting regularized objective function by means of the Fast Iterative Shrinkage-Thresholding Algorithm. Eventually, the regularization parameter is selected by means of the Miller criterion. The method is applied against both synthetic data mimicking the Spectrometer/Telescope Imaging X-rays (STIX) measurements and experimental observations provided by the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI). The performances of the method are compared with the results provided by standard visibility-based reconstruction methods. The results show that the application of the sparsity constraint and the use of a continuous, isotropic framework for the wavelet transform provide a notable spatial accuracy and significantly reduce the ringing effects due to the instrument point spread functions

Behavioural clusters and predictors of performance during recovery from stroke

We examined the patterns and variability of recovery post-stroke in multiple behavioral domains. A large cohort of first time stroke patients with heterogeneous lesions was studied prospectively and longitudinally at 1-2 weeks, 3 months and one year post-injury with structural MRI to measure lesion anatomy and in-depth neuropsychological assessment. Impairment was described at all timepoints by a few clusters of correlated deficits. The time course and magnitude of recovery was similar across domains, with change scores largely proportional to the initial deficit and most recovery occurring within the first three months. Damage to specific white matter tracts produced poorer recovery over several domains: attention and superior longitudinal fasciculus II/III, language and posterior arcuate fasciculus, motor and corticospinal tract. Finally, after accounting for the severity of the initial deficit, language and visual memory recovery/outcome was worse with lower education, while the occurrence of multiple deficits negatively impacted attention recovery

Contributions of Mixed-Phase Clouds to Reduced Arctic Amplification

Earths Arctic is particularly sensitive to global warming. The climate record shows that Arctic changes in surface temperatures far exceed that of the global mean, a phenomenon referred to as Arctic amplification. Here, we show that warming of the Arctic atmosphere causes mixed-phase clouds in the region to contain less ice and more supercooled liquid, which in turn tends to increase their amount and thick- ness, thereby inducing a positive feedback mainly by increasing downward longwave (LW) radiation at the surface. The increased downward LW radiation decreases the positive lapse rate feedback in the Arctic, thus resulting in reduced Arctic amplification. The strength of this feedback depends on the initial mean-state supercooled liquid fraction (SLF) and the ice crystal effective radii. We also show that reduced precipitation rates can result from large mean-state ice effective radii being replaced by relatively more smaller liquid droplets in the cloud phase feedback, despite having high mean-state SLFs, demonstrating the importance of the representation of cloud microphysics in the Arctic

EFFECT OF GENERIC PROMOTION OF FLOWERS ON THE USE OF RETAIL FLOWER OUTLETS

    Get PDF
AIDs demand models are used to test if the generic promotion of fresh-cut flowers influenced the market shares for florists, supermarkets, and other retail outlets. Were the generic efforts outlet neutral? Generic promotions of fresh-cut flowers is shown to be outlet neutral while the brand advertising increased florists' market share.Fresh-cut flowers, generic promotion, AIDs model, Marketing,

Discovery of noncanonical translation initiation sites through mass spectrometric analysis of protein N termini

Translation initiation generally occurs at AUG codons in eukaryotes, although it has been shown that non-AUG or non-canonical translation initiation can also occur. However, the evidence for noncanonical translation initiation sites (TISs) is largely indirect and based on ribosome profiling (Ribo-seq) studies. Here, using a strategy specifically designed to enrich N termini of proteins, we demonstrate that many human proteins are translated at noncanonical TISs. The large majority of TISs that mapped to 5' untranslated regions were noncanonical and led to N-terminal extension of annotated proteins or translation of upstream small open reading frames (uORF). It has been controversial whether the amino acid corresponding to the start codon is incorporated at the TIS or methionine is still incorporated. We found that methionine was incorporated at almost all noncanonical TISs identified in this study. Comparison of the TISs determined through mass spectrometry with ribosome profiling data revealed that about two-thirds of the novel annotations were indeed supported by the available ribosome profiling data. Sequence conservation across species and a higher abundance of noncanonical TISs than canonical ones in some cases suggests that the noncanonical TISs can have biological functions. Overall, this study provides evidence of protein translation initiation at noncanonical TISs and argues that further studies are required for elucidation of functional implications of such noncanonical translation initiation

A simple model to test equal catchability of marked and unmarked animals in capture:-recapture studies

    Get PDF
In capture-recapture studies it is generally assumed that both tagged and untagged ones have equal catch ability, No test however is available to verify this assumption. Rickerl has enumerated the effects of tagging and noted that these effects will in general be hard to detect. Darroch2 has pointed out the absence of such a test and stated "we hope to fill this gap at a later date". But it appears that this has not been done so far. Seber has also remarked the absence of such tests in general in concluding chapter of his remarkable book. Here we shall indicate a model, to detect the differential catchabilit

Pengaruh Penerapan Good Governance Dan Whistleblowing System Terhadap Kepatuhan Wajib Pajak Orang Pribadi Dengan Resiko Sanksi Pajak Sebagai Variabel Moderating (Studi Empiris Terhadap Wajib Pajak Orang Pribadi Di Kota Bekasi)

Tax revenue is the greatest source in financing government expenditure asstated in the APBN, the inefficiency in taxation administration system, however, can bepredicted as an influence to the low Tax payer compliance as portrayed in the low oftax ratio. The one enabling factor to improve the system is through the reformation byTax General Directorate by the implementation of Good Governance and WhistleBlowing System, where itwillaffect the improvement of tax payer compliance,Risk ofTax Sanction as the moderating variable as it is assumed willstrengthen that affects. The main respondent of this research is the individual taxpayer in Bekasi. This researchconclude that, implementation of the Good Governance has no significant affect on thecompliance level of individual taxpayer (t count 1.140 < t table 1.96), the Whistleblowing System, on the other hand, has significant affect on the compliance level (tcount 2.746 > t table 1.96), Risk of Tax Sanction as Moderating Variable strengthen theaffect between good governance and compliance level (t count 6.646 > t table 1.96) andalso strengthen the affect between Whistle Blowing System and compliance level (tcount 6.646 > t table 1.96
