Effects of Intergenerational Trauma on Attitudes Toward Reconciliation Among Genocide Survivors in Rwanda

    Get PDF
The 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda was a one-hundred-day period of mass slaughter that culminated from decades of ethnic tension. It is estimated that over a million Rwandans lost their lives as a result of this violence. While the effects of traumatic events and government-sponsored programs on reconciliation have been studied in Rwanda, limited research has been conducted on the effects of intergenerational trauma on those born during or after the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi. This thesis determines and evaluates the attitudes of young genocide survivors toward reconciliation in Rwanda. This thesis first reviews existing research on the effects of trauma on reconciliation following mass violence. It then discusses the methods used to identify participants and conduct interviews with 21 genocide survivors of varying ages and levels of exposure to trauma caused by the genocide. This study found that young genocide survivors in Rwanda support the simplification of the Commemoration period, as well as marriage between people of differing backgrounds. Additionally, members of this cohort confidently believe that mass violence will not occur again in Rwanda. These findings indicate that, overall, young genocide survivors in Rwanda may have more positive attitudes toward reconciliation than their older counterparts. No embargoAcademic Major: International Studie

JeffHEALTH-Helping East Africa Link to Health is a student-run organization at Thomas Jefferson University dedicated to improving basic medical education and quality of life in Rwanda, which was devastated in 1994 by civil war and genocide. Working in partnership with the Rwanda Village Concept Project, a student organization at the National University of Rwanda, JeffHEALTH seeks to implement sustainable health initiatives in our partner villages. Graduate students from Thomas Jefferson University travel to Rwanda where we taught Community Health Workers from the Villages of Akarambi and Ruli the following topics: Nutrition and Vitamin Deficiencies, Family Planning, Prenatal care, HIV, Sexually Transmitted Illnesses and Hepatitis, Breast and Cervical Cancer, Diabetes, and Fistulas. We also taught two programs to children of the villages (Oral Hygiene and Soil Transmitted Helminths) and talked with young adults about Circumcision and HIV Prevention and Sex Education.https://jdc.jefferson.edu/cwicposters/1018/thumbnail.jp

Agricultural Policy, Crop Failure and the 'Ruriganiza' Famine (1989) in Southern Rwanda: a Prelude to Genocide ?

    Get PDF
The paper analyses the agricultural policy of the Habyarimana regime, which ruled Rwanda from 1973 to 1994. Econometric analysis of rural household survey data is used to investigate the effects of the 1989 crop failure in southern Rwanda on children’s health status. The paper shows that children in southern Rwanda are chronically malnourished, more then in other prefectures of Rwanda. It is shown that the 1989 crop failure developed into famine and the causes of this development are investigated. It turns out that the Habyarimana regime did not respond to early warnings of famine conditions and pretend it did not know what was going on. The relationship between this non-response to famine, agricultural policy in general and the 1994 genocide is demonstrated.agriculture, famine, survey research, Rwanda

Taxonomic results of the Bryotrop expedition to Zaire and Rwanda : 2., history of bryological exploration of Zaire and Rwanda

    Get PDF
A short survey of the bryological exploration of Rwanda and Zaire is provided. The first to collect bryophytes in the area was Stuhlmann in 1891 on Ruwenzori. The first bryological collections from Rwanda were made by Mildbraed in 1907. In 1929 Humbert made the first gatherings on Mt. Kahuzi and Mt. Biega. Since then a lot of botanist have collected mosses and liverworts so that Rwanda and eastern Zaire can be regarded as well known. From most parts of Zaire and from Burundi however only few data are hitherto available
