Adversarial Training Towards Robust Multimedia Recommender System
With the prevalence of multimedia content on the Web, developing recommender
solutions that can effectively leverage the rich signal in multimedia data is
in urgent need. Owing to the success of deep neural networks in representation
learning, recent advance on multimedia recommendation has largely focused on
exploring deep learning methods to improve the recommendation accuracy. To
date, however, there has been little effort to investigate the robustness of
multimedia representation and its impact on the performance of multimedia
recommendation.
In this paper, we shed light on the robustness of multimedia recommender
system. Using the state-of-the-art recommendation framework and deep image
features, we demonstrate that the overall system is not robust, such that a
small (but purposeful) perturbation on the input image will severely decrease
the recommendation accuracy. This implies the possible weakness of multimedia
recommender system in predicting user preference, and more importantly, the
potential of improvement by enhancing its robustness. To this end, we propose a
novel solution named Adversarial Multimedia Recommendation (AMR), which can
lead to a more robust multimedia recommender model by using adversarial
learning. The idea is to train the model to defend an adversary, which adds
perturbations to the target image with the purpose of decreasing the model's
accuracy. We conduct experiments on two representative multimedia
recommendation tasks, namely, image recommendation and visually-aware product
recommendation. Extensive results verify the positive effect of adversarial
learning and demonstrate the effectiveness of our AMR method. Source codes are

A Study of Realtime Summarization Metrics
Unexpected news events, such as natural disasters or other human tragedies, create a large volume of dynamic text data from official news media as well as less formal social media. Automatic real-time text summarization has become an important tool for quickly transforming this overabundance of text into clear, useful information for end-users including affected individuals, crisis responders, and interested third parties. Despite the importance of real-time summarization systems, their evaluation is not well understood as classic methods for text summarization are inappropriate for real-time and streaming conditions.
The TREC 2013-2015 Temporal Summarization (TREC-TS) track was one of the first evaluation campaigns to tackle the challenges of real-time summarization evaluation, introducing new metrics, ground-truth generation methodology and dataset. In this paper, we present a study of TREC-TS track evaluation methodology, with the aim of documenting its design, analyzing its effectiveness, as well as identifying improvements and best practices for the evaluation of temporal summarization systems
Asymmetric bagging and random subspace for support vector machines-based relevance feedback in image retrieval
Relevance feedback schemes based on support vector machines (SVM) have been widely used in content-based image retrieval (CBIR). However, the performance of SVM-based relevance feedback is often poor when the number of labeled positive feedback samples is small. This is mainly due to three reasons: 1) an SVM classifier is unstable on a small-sized training set, 2) SVM's optimal hyperplane may be biased when the positive feedback samples are much less than the negative feedback samples, and 3) overfitting happens because the number of feature dimensions is much higher than the size of the training set. In this paper, we develop a mechanism to overcome these problems. To address the first two problems, we propose an asymmetric bagging-based SVM (AB-SVM). For the third problem, we combine the random subspace method and SVM for relevance feedback, which is named random subspace SVM (RS-SVM). Finally, by integrating AB-SVM and RS-SVM, an asymmetric bagging and random subspace SVM (ABRS-SVM) is built to solve these three problems and further improve the relevance feedback performance
Controlling Fairness and Bias in Dynamic Learning-to-Rank
Rankings are the primary interface through which many online platforms match
users to items (e.g. news, products, music, video). In these two-sided markets,
not only the users draw utility from the rankings, but the rankings also
determine the utility (e.g. exposure, revenue) for the item providers (e.g.
publishers, sellers, artists, studios). It has already been noted that
myopically optimizing utility to the users, as done by virtually all
learning-to-rank algorithms, can be unfair to the item providers. We,
therefore, present a learning-to-rank approach for explicitly enforcing
merit-based fairness guarantees to groups of items (e.g. articles by the same
publisher, tracks by the same artist). In particular, we propose a learning
algorithm that ensures notions of amortized group fairness, while
simultaneously learning the ranking function from implicit feedback data. The
algorithm takes the form of a controller that integrates unbiased estimators
for both fairness and utility, dynamically adapting both as more data becomes
available. In addition to its rigorous theoretical foundation and convergence
guarantees, we find empirically that the algorithm is highly practical and

Information Filtering on Coupled Social Networks
In this paper, based on the coupled social networks (CSN), we propose a
hybrid algorithm to nonlinearly integrate both social and behavior information
of online users. Filtering algorithm based on the coupled social networks,
which considers the effects of both social influence and personalized
preference. Experimental results on two real datasets, \emph{Epinions} and
\emph{Friendfeed}, show that hybrid pattern can not only provide more accurate
recommendations, but also can enlarge the recommendation coverage while
adopting global metric. Further empirical analyses demonstrate that the mutual
reinforcement and rich-club phenomenon can also be found in coupled social
networks where the identical individuals occupy the core position of the online
system. This work may shed some light on the in-depth understanding structure
and function of coupled social networks
Edge Potential Functions (EPF) and Genetic Algorithms (GA) for Edge-Based Matching of Visual Objects
Edges are known to be a semantically rich representation of the contents of a digital image. Nevertheless, their use in practical applications is sometimes limited by computation and complexity constraints. In this paper, a new approach is presented that addresses the problem of matching visual objects in digital images by combining the concept of Edge Potential Functions (EPF) with a powerful matching tool based on Genetic Algorithms (GA). EPFs can be easily calculated starting from an edge map and provide a kind of attractive pattern for a matching contour, which is conveniently exploited by GAs. Several tests were performed in the framework of different image matching applications. An Axiomatic Analysis of Diversity Evaluation Metrics: Introducing the Rank-Biased Utility Metric
Many evaluation metrics have been defined to evaluate the effectiveness
ad-hoc retrieval and search result diversification systems. However, it is
often unclear which evaluation metric should be used to analyze the performance
of retrieval systems given a specific task. Axiomatic analysis is an
informative mechanism to understand the fundamentals of metrics and their
suitability for particular scenarios. In this paper, we define a
constraint-based axiomatic framework to study the suitability of existing
metrics in search result diversification scenarios. The analysis informed the
definition of Rank-Biased Utility (RBU) -- an adaptation of the well-known
Rank-Biased Precision metric -- that takes into account redundancy and the user
effort associated to the inspection of documents in the ranking. Our
experiments over standard diversity evaluation campaigns show that the proposed
metric captures quality criteria reflected by different metrics, being suitable
in the absence of knowledge about particular features of the scenario under
