    Dynamic Performance Analysis of a Five-Phase PMSM Drive Using Model Reference Adaptive System and Enhanced Sliding Mode Observer

    This paper aims to evaluate the dynamic performance of a five-phase PMSM drive using two different observers: sliding mode (SMO) and model reference adaptive system (MRAS). The design of the vector control for the drive is firstly introduced in details to visualize the proper selection of speed and current controllers’ gains, then the construction of the two observers are presented. The stability check for the two observers are also presented and analyzed, and finally the evaluation results are presented to visualize the features of each sensorless technique and identify the advantages and shortages as well. The obtained results reveal that the de-signed SMO exhibits better performance and enhanced robustness compared with the MRAS under different operating conditions. This fact is approved through the obtained results considering a mismatch in the values of stator resistance and stator inductance as well. Large deviation in the values of estimated speed and rotor position are observed under MRAS, and this is also accompanied with high speed and torque oscillations

    Sensorless Direct Flux Vector Control of Synchronous Reluctance Motors Including Standstill, MTPA and Flux Weakening

    This paper proposes a sensorless direct flux vector control scheme for synchronous reluctance motor drives. Torque is controlled at constant switching frequency, via the closed loop regulation of the stator flux linkage vector and of the current component in quadrature with it, using the stator flux oriented reference frame. A hybrid flux and position observer combines back-electromotive force integration with pulsating voltage injection around zero speed. Around zero speed, the position observer takes advantage of injected pulsating voltage. Instead of the commonly used current demodulation, the position error feedback is extracted here at the output of the observer’s flux maps, thus resulting in immunity towards the cross-saturation position error. The Maximum Torque per Ampere (MTPA) strategy is used. A detailed analysis puts in evidence the key advantages and disadvantages related to the use of the MTPA in the sensorless control of the Synchronous Reluctance machine, for both the saliency based and the back-EMF based sensorless methods. Extensive experimental results are reported for a 2.2 kW synchronous reluctance motor prototype, showing the feasibility of the proposed method. These include speed response to step and sinusoidal load disturbances at standstill, up to 121% of rated torque, and speed response tests covering the flux weakening speed region

To achieve this goal, mathematical models of the electric machine/drive system are necessary. Hence, this motivated the editors to instigate the Special Issue “Mathematical Approaches to Modeling, Optimally Designing, and Controlling Electric Machine”, aiming to collect novel publications that push the state-of-the art towards optimal performance for the electric machine/drive system. Seventeen papers have been published in this Special Issue. The published papers focus on several aspects of the electric machine/drive system with respect to the mathematical modelling. Novel optimization methods, control approaches, and comparative analysis for electric drive system based on various electric machines were discussed in the published papers

    Precision Control of a Sensorless Brushless Direct Current Motor System

    Sensorless control strategies were first suggested well over a decade ago with the aim of reducing the size, weight and unit cost of electrically actuated servo systems. The resulting algorithms have been successfully applied to the induction and synchronous motor families in applications where control of armature speeds above approximately one hundred revolutions per minute is desired. However, sensorless position control remains problematic. This thesis provides an in depth investigation into sensorless motor control strategies for high precision motion control applications. Specifically, methods of achieving control of position and very low speed thresholds are investigated. The developed grey box identification techniques are shown to perform better than their traditional white or black box counterparts. Further, fuzzy model based sliding mode control is implemented and results demonstrate its improved robustness to certain classes of disturbance. Attempts to reject uncertainty within the developed models using the sliding mode are discussed. Novel controllers, which enhance the performance of the sliding mode are presented. Finally, algorithms that achieve control without a primary feedback sensor are successfully demonstrated. Sensorless position control is achieved with resolutions equivalent to those of existing stepper motor technology. The successful control of armature speeds below sixty revolutions per minute is achieved and problems typically associated with motor starting are circumvented.Research Instruments Ltd

    Multi-objective torque control of switched reluctance machine

    PhD ThesisThe recent growing interest in Switched Reluctance Drives (SRD) is due to the electrification of many products in industries including electric/hybrid electric vehicles, more-electric aircrafts, white-goods, and healthcare, in which the Switched Reluctance Machine (SRM) has potential prospects in satisfying the respective requirements of these applications. Its main merits are robust structure, suitability for harsh environments, fault-tolerance, low cost, and ability to operate over a wide speed range. Nevertheless, the SRM has limitations such as large torque ripple, high acoustic noise, and low torque density. This research focuses on the torque control of the SRD with the objectives of achieving zero torque error, minimal torque ripple, high reliability and robustness, and lower size, weight, and cost of implementation. Direct Torque Control and Direct Instantaneous Torque Control are the most common methods used to obtain desired torque characteristics including optimal torque density and minimized torque ripple in SRD. However, these torque control methods, compared to conventional hysteresis current control, require the use of power devices with a higher rating of about 150% to achieve the desired superior performance. These requirements add extra cost, conduction loss, and stress on the drive’s semiconductors and machine winding. To overcome these drawbacks, a simple and intuitive torque control method based on a novel adaptive quasi sliding mode control is developed in this study. The proposed torque control approach is designed considering the findings of an investigation performed in this thesis of the existing widely used control techniques for SRD based on information flow complexity. A test rig comprising a magnet assisted SRM driven by an asymmetric converter is constructed to validate the proposed torque control method and to compare its performance with that of direct instantaneous torque control, and current hysteresis control methods. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed torque control reduces the torque ripple over a wide speed range without demanding a high current and/or a high switching frequency. In addition, It has been shown that the proposed method is superior to current hysteresis control method in the sensorless operation of the machine. Furthermore, the sensorless performance of the proposed method is investigated with the lower component count R-Dump converter. The simulation results have also demonstrated the excellent controller response using the standard R-Dump converter and also with its novel version developed in this thesis that needs only one current sensor
