    Robust Localization in 3D Prior Maps for Autonomous Driving.

    In order to navigate autonomously, many self-driving vehicles require precise localization within an a priori known map that is annotated with exact lane locations, traffic signs, and additional metadata that govern the rules of the road. This approach transforms the extremely difficult and unpredictable task of online perception into a more structured localization problem—where exact localization in these maps provides the autonomous agent a wealth of knowledge for safe navigation. This thesis presents several novel localization algorithms that leverage a high-fidelity three-dimensional (3D) prior map that together provide a robust and reliable framework for vehicle localization. First, we present a generic probabilistic method for localizing an autonomous vehicle equipped with a 3D light detection and ranging (LIDAR) scanner. This proposed algorithm models the world as a mixture of several Gaussians, characterizing the z-height and reflectivity distribution of the environment—which we rasterize to facilitate fast and exact multiresolution inference. Second, we propose a visual localization strategy that replaces the expensive 3D LIDAR scanners with significantly cheaper, commodity cameras. In doing so, we exploit a graphics processing unit to generate synthetic views of our belief environment, resulting in a localization solution that achieves a similar order of magnitude error rate with a sensor that is several orders of magnitude cheaper. Finally, we propose a visual obstacle detection algorithm that leverages knowledge of our high-fidelity prior maps in its obstacle prediction model. This not only provides obstacle awareness at high rates for vehicle navigation, but also improves our visual localization quality as we are cognizant of static and non-static regions of the environment.     FLAT2D: Fast localization from approximate transformation into 2D

    Many autonomous vehicles require precise localization into a prior map in order to support planning and to leverage semantic information within those maps (e.g. that the right lane is a turn-only lane.) A popular approach in automotive systems is to use infrared intensity maps of the ground surface to localize, making them susceptible to failures when the surface is obscured by snow or when the road is repainted. An emerging alternative is to localize based on the 3D structure around the vehicle; these methods are robust to these types of changes, but the maps are costly both in terms of storage and the computational cost of matching. In this paper, we propose a fast method for localizing based on 3D structure around the vehicle using a 2D representation. This representation retains many of the advantages of "full" matching in 3D, but comes with dramatically lower space and computational requirements. We also introduce a variation of Graph-SLAM tailored to support localization, allowing us to make use of graph-based error-recovery techniques in our localization estimate. Finally, we present real-world localization results for both an indoor mobile robotic platform and an autonomous golf cart, demonstrating that autonomous vehicles do not need full 3D matching to accurately localize in the environment

    Visual and light detection and ranging-based simultaneous localization and mapping for self-driving cars

    In recent years, there has been a strong demand for self-driving cars. For safe navigation, self-driving cars need both precise localization and robust mapping. While global navigation satellite system (GNSS) can be used to locate vehicles, it has some limitations, such as satellite signal absence (tunnels and caves), which restrict its use in urban scenarios. Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) are an excellent solution for identifying a vehicle’s position while at the same time constructing a representation of the environment. SLAM-based visual and light detection and ranging (LIDAR) refer to using cameras and LIDAR as source of external information. This paper presents an implementation of SLAM algorithm for building a map of environment and obtaining car’s trajectory using LIDAR scans. A detailed overview of current visual and LIDAR SLAM approaches has also been provided and discussed. Simulation results referred to LIDAR scans indicate that SLAM is convenient and helpful in localization and mapping

    EgoVM: Achieving Precise Ego-Localization using Lightweight Vectorized Maps

    Accurate and reliable ego-localization is critical for autonomous driving. In this paper, we present EgoVM, an end-to-end localization network that achieves comparable localization accuracy to prior state-of-the-art methods, but uses lightweight vectorized maps instead of heavy point-based maps. To begin with, we extract BEV features from online multi-view images and LiDAR point cloud. Then, we employ a set of learnable semantic embeddings to encode the semantic types of map elements and supervise them with semantic segmentation, to make their feature representation consistent with BEV features. After that, we feed map queries, composed of learnable semantic embeddings and coordinates of map elements, into a transformer decoder to perform cross-modality matching with BEV features. Finally, we adopt a robust histogram-based pose solver to estimate the optimal pose by searching exhaustively over candidate poses. We comprehensively validate the effectiveness of our method using both the nuScenes dataset and a newly collected dataset. The experimental results show that our method achieves centimeter-level localization accuracy, and outperforms existing methods using vectorized maps by a large margin. Furthermore, our model has been extensively tested in a large fleet of autonomous vehicles under various challenging urban scenes.Comment: 8 page
