    A Fusion Framework for Camouflaged Moving Foreground Detection in the Wavelet Domain

    Detecting camouflaged moving foreground objects has been known to be difficult due to the similarity between the foreground objects and the background. Conventional methods cannot distinguish the foreground from background due to the small differences between them and thus suffer from under-detection of the camouflaged foreground objects. In this paper, we present a fusion framework to address this problem in the wavelet domain. We first show that the small differences in the image domain can be highlighted in certain wavelet bands. Then the likelihood of each wavelet coefficient being foreground is estimated by formulating foreground and background models for each wavelet band. The proposed framework effectively aggregates the likelihoods from different wavelet bands based on the characteristics of the wavelet transform. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method significantly outperformed existing methods in detecting camouflaged foreground objects. Specifically, the average F-measure for the proposed algorithm was 0.87, compared to 0.71 to 0.8 for the other state-of-the-art methods.Comment: 13 pages, accepted by IEEE TI

    An improved background segmentation method for ghost removals

    With ongoing research assessment in higher education and the introduction of master’s‐level work in initial teacher education, the growing need for teacher educators to develop research identities is discussed in relation to mentoring and support in two universities. Twelve interviews—with three teacher educators and three research mentors from each university—were carried out, in order to identify effective mentoring practices and other forms of support, as well as any barriers or problems encountered in developing a research profile. An innovative aspect of the methodological approach is that beginning researchers from the teacher education faculty in both universities undertook the interviewing and co‐authored the article. The need for an entitlement to and protection of research time is stressed, as well as a range of supportive practices within an active research culture.     ROAM: a Rich Object Appearance Model with Application to Rotoscoping

    Rotoscoping, the detailed delineation of scene elements through a video shot, is a painstaking task of tremendous importance in professional post-production pipelines. While pixel-wise segmentation techniques can help for this task, professional rotoscoping tools rely on parametric curves that offer the artists a much better interactive control on the definition, editing and manipulation of the segments of interest. Sticking to this prevalent rotoscoping paradigm, we propose a novel framework to capture and track the visual aspect of an arbitrary object in a scene, given a first closed outline of this object. This model combines a collection of local foreground/background appearance models spread along the outline, a global appearance model of the enclosed object and a set of distinctive foreground landmarks. The structure of this rich appearance model allows simple initialization, efficient iterative optimization with exact minimization at each step, and on-line adaptation in videos. We demonstrate qualitatively and quantitatively the merit of this framework through comparisons with tools based on either dynamic segmentation with a closed curve or pixel-wise binary labelling

    Scene modelling using an adaptive mixture of Gaussians in colour and space

    We present an integrated pixel segmentation and region tracking algorithm, designed for indoor environments. Visual monitoring systems often use frame differencing techniques to independently classify each image pixel as either foreground or background. Typically, this level of processing does not take account of the global image structure, resulting in frequent misclassification. We use an adaptive Gaussian mixture model in colour and space to represent background and foreground regions of the scene. This model is used to probabilistically classify observed pixel values, incorporating the global scene structure into pixel-level segmentation. We evaluate our system over 4 sequences and show that it successfully segments foreground pixels and tracks major foreground regions as they move through the scene

    Visual Object Tracking: The Initialisation Problem

    Model initialisation is an important component of object tracking. Tracking algorithms are generally provided with the first frame of a sequence and a bounding box (BB) indicating the location of the object. This BB may contain a large number of background pixels in addition to the object and can lead to parts-based tracking algorithms initialising their object models in background regions of the BB. In this paper, we tackle this as a missing labels problem, marking pixels sufficiently away from the BB as belonging to the background and learning the labels of the unknown pixels. Three techniques, One-Class SVM (OC-SVM), Sampled-Based Background Model (SBBM) (a novel background model based on pixel samples), and Learning Based Digital Matting (LBDM), are adapted to the problem. These are evaluated with leave-one-video-out cross-validation on the VOT2016 tracking benchmark. Our evaluation shows both OC-SVMs and SBBM are capable of providing a good level of segmentation accuracy but are too parameter-dependent to be used in real-world scenarios. We show that LBDM achieves significantly increased performance with parameters selected by cross validation and we show that it is robust to parameter variation.Comment: 15th Conference on Computer and Robot Vision (CRV 2018).     CVABS: Moving Object Segmentation with Common Vector Approach for Videos

    Background modelling is a fundamental step for several real-time computer vision applications that requires security systems and monitoring. An accurate background model helps detecting activity of moving objects in the video. In this work, we have developed a new subspace based background modelling algorithm using the concept of Common Vector Approach with Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization. Once the background model that involves the common characteristic of different views corresponding to the same scene is acquired, a smart foreground detection and background updating procedure is applied based on dynamic control parameters. A variety of experiments is conducted on different problem types related to dynamic backgrounds. Several types of metrics are utilized as objective measures and the obtained visual results are judged subjectively. It was observed that the proposed method stands successfully for all problem types reported on CDNet2014 dataset by updating the background frames with a self-learning feedback mechanism.Comment: 12 Pages, 4 Figures, 1 Tabl
