Transitioning Applications to Semantic Web Services: An Automated Formal Approach
Semantic Web Services have been recognized as a promising technology that exhibits huge commercial potential, and attract significant attention from both industry and the research community. Despite expectations being high, the industrial take-up of Semantic Web Service technologies has been slower than expected. One of the main reasons is that many systems have been developed without considering the potential of the web in integrating services and sharing resources. Without a systematic methodology and proper tool support, the migration from legacy systems to Semantic Web Service-based systems can be a very tedious and expensive process, which carries a definite risk of failure. There is an urgent need to provide strategies which allow the migration of legacy systems to Semantic Web Services platforms, and also tools to support such a strategy. In this paper we propose a methodology for transitioning these applications to Semantic Web Services by taking the advantage of rigorous mathematical methods. Unity in Diversity Through Art? Joseph Beuysā Models of Cultural Dialogue
This essay proposes the artist Joseph Beuys and his work as paradigmatic for art that through its own diversity of approach can show possibilities for addressing diverse audiences, diverging receptions and modes of participation. It arises from a symposium on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the artistās death held at the Goethe Institut Dublin, 23 January 2006. The argument focuses on Beuys practice from his Ulysses-Extension to the Migration Workshop at documenta 6, 1977, the FIU, as well as his work (and legacy) in Ireland. Relevant theories include Ecos openness and Adornoās negative and positive representation, since Beuys works relationship to the Holocaust and trauma turns out to be central. Beuys is offered as predecessor of current discourse such as Bourriaudās Relational Aesthetics and Documenta11. The article concludes with a new theoretization of participation in culture, Irit Rogoffās Looking Away. Scarcity in IP addresses: IPv4 Address Transfer Markets and the Regional Internet Address Registries
We are running out of Internet addresses. This paper evaluates address transfer policies that Internet governance agencies are considering as a response to the depletion of the IPv4 address space. The paper focuses on proposals to allow organizations holding IPv4 addresses to sell address blocks to other organizations willing to buy them. This paper analyzes the economics of the proposed transfer policies, and conducts a systematic comparison of the policies proposed in the three main world Internet regions

Child Exploitation and the FIFA World Cup: A review of risks and protective interventions
This review was commissioned by the Child Abuse Programme (CAP) of Oak Foundation, a large international philanthropic organisation. It forms part of CAPās effort to win societal rejection of practices such as the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents around major sporting events (MSEs), and to embed prevention and protection from exploitation as a permanent concern for global sports-related bodies. This review is intended to inform action in countries that host MSEs and to provide some suggestions on how hosting countries can avoid past pitfalls and mistakes in relation to child exploitation, especially economic and sexual exploitation. Importantly, it also acts as a call to action by those responsible for commissioning and staging MSEs, such as FIFA and the IOC, to anticipate, prepare for and adopt risk mitigation strategies and interventions. Positive leadership from these culturally powerful bodies could prove decisive in shifting hearts, minds and actions in the direction of improved safety for children
A Systematic Aspect-Oriented Refactoring and Testing Strategy, and its Application to JHotDraw
Aspect oriented programming aims at achieving better modularization for a
system's crosscutting concerns in order to improve its key quality attributes,
such as evolvability and reusability. Consequently, the adoption of
aspect-oriented techniques in existing (legacy) software systems is of interest
to remediate software aging. The refactoring of existing systems to employ
aspect-orientation will be considerably eased by a systematic approach that
will ensure a safe and consistent migration.
In this paper, we propose a refactoring and testing strategy that supports
such an approach and consider issues of behavior conservation and (incremental)
integration of the aspect-oriented solution with the original system. The
strategy is applied to the JHotDraw open source project and illustrated on a
group of selected concerns. Finally, we abstract from the case study and
present a number of generic refactorings which contribute to an incremental
aspect-oriented refactoring process and associate particular types of
crosscutting concerns to the model and features of the employed aspect
language. The contributions of this paper are both in the area of supporting
migration towards aspect-oriented solutions and supporting the development of
aspect languages that are better suited for such migrations.Comment: 25 page
Abmash: Mashing Up Legacy Web Applications by Automated Imitation of Human Actions
Many business web-based applications do not offer applications programming
interfaces (APIs) to enable other applications to access their data and
functions in a programmatic manner. This makes their composition difficult (for
instance to synchronize data between two applications). To address this
challenge, this paper presents Abmash, an approach to facilitate the
integration of such legacy web applications by automatically imitating human
interactions with them. By automatically interacting with the graphical user
interface (GUI) of web applications, the system supports all forms of
integrations including bi-directional interactions and is able to interact with
AJAX-based applications. Furthermore, the integration programs are easy to
write since they deal with end-user, visual user-interface elements. The

Migrating Legacy Systems in the Global Merger & Acquisition Environment Teaching Case
MetaFrame system migration project at Worldpharm, driven by the fiesta of merger and acquisition, had engendered both technical challenges and convoluted organizational issues in the climate of uncertainties. This project was aligned with IT strategy that aimed to streamlining IT resources and enhancing system efficiency of the post-merger organization. In spite of recognizing that it was treading in the treacherous water, Worldpharm still insisted on instigating this post-merger MetaFrame system migration project, which served to (1) consolidate all legacy MetaFrame systems from the three pre-merger pharmaceutical organizations into one globally managed system and (2) develop a global support team for the globally managed MetaFrame system
