Nonlinear Dynamics of Aeolian Sand Ripples
We study the initial instability of flat sand surface and further nonlinear
dynamics of wind ripples. The proposed continuous model of ripple formation
allowed us to simulate the development of a typical asymmetric ripple shape and
the evolution of sand ripple pattern. We suggest that this evolution occurs via

A two-species continuum model for aeolian sand ripples
We formulate a continuum model for aeolian sand ripples consisting of two
species of grains: a lower layer of relatively immobile clusters, with an upper
layer of highly mobile grains moving on top. We predict analytically the ripple
wavelength, initial ripple growth rate and threshold saltation flux for ripple
formation. Numerical simulations show the evolution of realistic ripple
profiles from initial surface roughness via ripple growth and merger.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Analysis of the Second Moment of the LT Decoder
We analyze the second moment of the ripple size during the LT decoding
process and prove that the standard deviation of the ripple size for an LT-code
with length is of the order of Together with a result by Karp
et. al stating that the expectation of the ripple size is of the order of
[3], this gives bounds on the error probability of the LT decoder. We also give
an analytic expression for the variance of the ripple size up to terms of
constant order, and refine the expression in [3] for the expectation of the
ripple size up to terms of the order of , thus providing a first step

2DV modelling of sediment transport processes over full-scale ripples in regular asymmetric oscillatory flow
Wave-induced, steep vortex ripples are ubiquitous features in shallow coastal seas and it is therefore important to fully understand and model the sediment transport processes that occur over them. To this end, two two-dimensional vertical (2DV) models have been critically tested against detailed velocity and sediment concentration measurements above mobile ripples in regular asymmetric oscillatory flow. The two models are a k–ω turbulence-closure model and a discrete-vortex, particle-tracking (DVPT) model, while the data are obtained in the Aberdeen oscillatory flow tunnel (AOFT). The models and the data demonstrate that the time-dependent velocity and suspended sediment concentration above the ripple are dominated by the generation of lee-side vortices and their subsequent ejection at flow reversal. The DVPT model predicts the positions and strengths of the vortices reasonably well, but tends to overpredict the velocity close to the ripple surface. The k–ω model, on the other hand, underpredicts the height to which the vortices are lifted, but is better able to predict the velocity close to the bed. In terms of the cycle- and ripple-averaged horizontal velocity, both models are able to reproduce the observed offshore flow close to and below the ripple crest and the DVPT model is able to produce the onshore flow higher up. In the vicinity of the vortices, the DVPT model better represents the concentration (because of its better prediction of vorticity). The k–ω model, on the other hand, better represents the concentration close to the ripple surface and higher up in the flow (because of the better representation of the near-bed flow and background turbulence). The measured and predicted cycle- and ripple-averaged suspended sediment concentrations are in reasonable agreement and demonstrate the expected region of exponential decay. The models are able to reproduce the observed offshore cycle- and ripple-averaged suspended sediment flux from the ripple troughs upwards, and as a result, produce net offshore suspended sediment transport rates that are in reasonable agreement. The net measured offshore suspended transport rate, based on the integration of fluxes, was found to be consistent with the total net offshore transport measured in the tunnel as a whole once the onshore transport resulting from ripple migration was taken into account, as would be expected. This demonstrates the importance of models being able to predict ripple-migration rates. However, at present neither of the models is able to do so
Design and Development of Low Torque Ripple Variable-Speed Drive System With Six-Phase Switched Reluctance Motors
Switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives conventionally use current control techniques at low speed and voltage control techniques at high speed. However, these conventional methods usually fail to restrain the torque ripple, which is normally associated with this type of machine. Compared with conventional three-phase SRMs, higher phase SRMs have the advantage of lower torque ripple: To further reduce their torque ripple, this paper presents a control method for torque ripple reduction in six-phase SRM drives. A constant instantaneous torque is obtained by regulating the rotational speed of the stator flux linkage. This torque control method is subsequently developed for a conventional converter and a proposed novel converter with fewer switching devices. Moreover, modeling and simulation of this six-phase SRM drive system has been conducted in detail and validated experimentally using a 4.0-kW six-phase SRM drive system. Test results demonstrate that the proposed torque control method has outstanding performance of restraining the torque ripple with both converters for the six-phase SRM, showing superior performance to the conventional control techniques
Filter distortion effects on telemetry signal-to-noise ratio
The effect of filtering on the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of a coherently demodulated band-limited signal is determined in the presence of worse-case amplitude ripple. The problem is formulated mathematically as an optimization problem in the L2-Hilbert space. The form of the worst-cast amplitude ripple is specified, and the degradation in the SNR is derived in a closed form expression. It is shown that when the maximum passband amplitude ripple is 2 delta (peak to peak), the SNR is degraded by at most (1 - delta squared), even when the ripple is unknown or uncompensated. For example, an SNR loss of less than 0.01 dB due to amplitude ripple can be assured by keeping the amplitude ripple to under 0.42 dB
A plug-and-play ripple mitigation approach for DC-links in hybrid systems
© 2016 IEEE.In this paper, a plug-and-play ripple mitigation technique is proposed. It requires only the sensing of the DC-link voltage and can operate fully independently to remove the low-frequency voltage ripple. The proposed technique is nonintrusive to the existing hardware and enables hot-swap operation without disrupting the normal functionality of the existing power system. It is user-friendly, modular and suitable for plug-and-play operation. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the ripple-mitigation capability of the proposed device. The DC-link voltage ripple in a 110 W miniature hybrid system comprising an AC/DC converter and two resistive loads is shown to be significantly reduced from 61 V to only 3.3 V. Moreover, it is shown that with the proposed device, the system reliability has been improved by alleviating the components' thermal stresses
