    Wage Differentials Between Union and Non-union Workers: An Econometric Analysis

    Abstract It is increasingly recognized that institutional factors such as trade unions do play a dominant role in determining the levels of wages, standard of working conditions. This is more pronounced in the industrial sector of developing economies. The role of labor organizations in the labor market has been firmly identified especially in relation to wage bargaining with studies focussing mainly on the advanced industrial economies. In the Indian context, there exist a number of studies on the evolution of the structure; functions and aspects of trade unions; but the empirical analysis of the impact of trade union on wages are rather limited. In this backdrop, this paper attempts to analyze the impact of trade union on wages using a survey covering blue collar male workers employed in manufacturing industries in Chennai district of Tamil Nadu, in southern part of India. We have estimated earnings functions for union and non-union workers separately. The earnings functions are corrected for selectivity bias. Oaxaca, Cotton and Reimer’s decomposition method has been used to decompose the gross earnings differential between union and non-union workers into explained and unexplained differentials. The result shows that there exist significant wage differentials between workers in the union and non-union sector. The unexplained portion of the decomposition, which is around 47 percent (reduced to 42 percent after correcting for selectivity bias) can be attributed to unionism.     Toward Universal Broadband in Rural Alaska

    The TERRA-Southwest project is extending broadband service to 65 communities in the Bristol Bay, Bethel and Yukon-Kuskokwim regions. A stimulus project funded by a combination of grants and loans from the Rural Utilities Service (RUS), TERRA-Southwest has installed a middle-mile network using optical fiber and terrestrial microwave. Last-mile service will be through fixed wireless or interconnection with local telephone networks. The State of Alaska, through its designee Connect Alaska, also received federal stimulus funding from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) for tasks that include support for an Alaska Broadband Task Force “to both formalize a strategic broadband plan for the state of Alaska and coordinate broadband activities across relevant agencies and organizations.” Thus, a study of the impact of the TERRA project in southwest Alaska is both relevant and timely. This first phase provides baseline data on current access to and use of ICTs and Internet connectivity in rural Alaska, and some insights about perceived benefits and potential barriers to adoption of broadband. It is also intended to provide guidance to the State Broadband Task Force in determining how the extension of broadband throughout the state could contribute to education, social services, and economic activities that would enhance Alaska’s future. Results of the research could also be used proactively to develop strategies to encourage broadband adoption, and to identify applications and support needed by users with limited ICT skills.Connect Alaska.     Shared Value in Chile: Increasing Private Sector Competitiveness by Solving Social Problems

    Over the last few decades, Chile has experienced rapid and sustained economic, social, and institutional development. Crucial challenges remain, however, in the form of social inequity, lack of opportunity, mistrust, and social unrest. The Chilean private sector is at an inflection point in its relationship with society. The corporate sector has both contributed to and benefited from the growth and development of the last decades, but remaining social challenges pose significant constraints to the continued growth of the private sector. High levels of mistrust regarding the role of business in society reflect a widespread belief that profit making activities are merely a demonstration of corporate greed. The Chilean private sector faces a frequently antagonistic relationship with government and civil society that will likely worsen unless companies are able to find ways to authentically link their businesses to efforts to solve Chile's social problems. On the other hand, if government and civil society conclude that the private sector has no contribution to make to the country's social and economic development strategy, Chile will squander an important engine for creating shared prosperity. The good news is that there does not need to be a trade-off between private sector competitiveness and greater prosperity for all Chileans. Shared value, a concept explained in Harvard Professor Michael Porter and Mark Kramer's Harvard Business Review articles, suggests an approach for companies to increase their competitiveness and profitability by helping to solve social problems.     Twenty-First Century Digital Transformation of Work and Jobs in Northern Saskatchewan

    The proliferation of digital technologies that replicate human abilities, behaviors and intelligence throughout the second decade of the twenty-first century are transforming work and jobs in many different sectors in the international economy. Human workers are competing against smarter and more capable digital machines for an increasing number of tasks and jobs. The emergence of advanced digital machines challenges policy makers and governments to rethink traditional education and workforce training models and consider new innovative responses for work and jobs in the digital age. Mining operations in northern Saskatchewan use digital technologies to increase productivity, enhance worker safety and lower production costs. New and emerging digital technologies are present in the northern Saskatchewan minerals sector, like exploration drones, advanced computer systems and automated machines are helping mining companies to regain or sustain competitiveness in difficult economic conditions marked by low commodity prices and uncertainty. Digital technologies have also contributed to the job displacement of Aboriginal workers in jobs requiring ordinary skills and education. Northern Saskatchewan’s remoteness and poor internet connectivity have not prevented the digital transformation of work or jobs in the region. This thesis examines the potential impact of fewer jobs caused by the digitization of work in the northern Saskatchewan resource economy by structuring the policy problem, assessing the impact on Aboriginal workers and evaluating the preparedness of provincial institutions and programs for education and training. An extensive literature review informed the research questions and methods.     Blockchain Technology Based Supply Chain Systems and Supply Chain Performance: A Resource-Based View

    Blockchain technology (BCT) is set to transform firms’ present ways of managing supply chains. This thesis explores how the efforts by firms to integrate BCT into their supply chain systems and activities, can enable certain supply chain capabilities and subsequently, improve supply chain performance. Using an abductive research approach, qualitative content analyses of 126 cases of firms’ efforts in BCT-based supply chain systems (BCT-SCS) across multiple industries are conducted to identify the BCT-enabled supply chain capabilities and their performance outcomes. Findings reveal that the present BCT-SCS efforts are mainly oriented towards improving the operational-level capabilities namely, information sharing and coordination capabilities rather than strategic-level capabilities namely, integration and collaboration capabilities. The predominant performance outcomes resulting from these capabilities along with the BCT-SCS are quality compliance and improvement, process improvement, flexibility, reduced cost, and reduced process time. However, the performance outcomes vary with industry type, based on the risks that the industry faces. Based on the study’s findings, an integrated framework of research propositions is presented to facilitate future empirical research

    Trade in Energy Services - GATS and India

    Energy plays a vital role in the development of any economy and given its unequal distribution trade in energy, especially fossil fuels, is an important component of international trade. In the past, due to its public good characteristics, energy-related services were mostly supplied by the government. With liberalization and globalization the sector underwent significant transformation. Many new services developed and large multinationals emerged which increased global trade in energy services. Energy services is now an important component of all trade agreements. In the above context, this paper examines Indias opportunities and constraints to trade in energy services within the GATS framework. The study found that India has the capability of exporting high-skilled manpower at competitive prices but is facing various market access, discriminatory and regulatory barriers in markets of export interest. With the entry of energy producing countries such as Saudi Arabia into the WTO, the Doha negotiations provide an important platform to offensively push for liberalization in this sector. India needs foreign investment, technical know-how and international best practices in energy. The country has progressively liberalized this sector and there are no major entry barriers. However, India has not been successful in attracting large foreign investment and technology. This is due to various domestic barriers which make it difficult to set up a competitive operation. The study lists the reform measures which will help the sector become globally competitive, protect the interests of consumers and meet the energy needs of society.     Digitalization in food supply chains: A bibliometric review and key-route main path analysis

    Technological advances such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, big data, social media, and geographic information systems represent a building block of the digital transformation that supports the resilience of the food supply chain (FSC) and increases its efficiency. This paper reviews the literature surrounding digitalization in FSCs. A bibliometric and key-route main path analysis was carried out to objectively and analytically uncover the knowledge development in digitalization within the context of sustainable FSCs. The research began with the selection of 2140 articles published over nearly five decades. Then, the articles were examined according to several bibliometric metrics such as year of publication, countries, institutions, sources, authors, and keywords frequency. A keyword co-occurrence network was generated to cluster the relevant literature. Findings of the review and bibliometric analysis indicate that research at the intersection of technology and the FSC has gained substantial interest from scholars. On the basis of keyword co-occurrence network, the literature is focused on the role of information communication technology for agriculture and food security, food waste and circular economy, and the merge of the Internet of Things and blockchain in the FSC. The analysis of the key-route main path uncovers three critical periods marking the development of technology-enabled FSCs. The study offers scholars a better understanding of digitalization within the agri-food industry and the current knowledge gaps for future research. Practitioners may find the review useful to remain ahead of the latest discussions of technologyenabled FSCs. To the authors’ best knowledge, the current study is one of the few endeavors to explore technology-enabled FSCs using a comprehensive sample of journal articles published during the past five decades

    Global Economic Crisis: Impact and Restructuring of the Services Sector in India

    The Indian economy has shown considerable resilience to the global economic crisis by maintaining one of the highest growth rates in the world. The services sector accounted for around 88% of the growth rate in real gross domestic product in 2008–09. To demystify the relatively resilient growth of the services sector in India, this study examines both the demand-side and the supply-side factors that have contributed to its growth.
