A Study of Optimal 4-bit Reversible Toffoli Circuits and Their Synthesis
Optimal synthesis of reversible functions is a non-trivial problem. One of
the major limiting factors in computing such circuits is the sheer number of
reversible functions. Even restricting synthesis to 4-bit reversible functions
results in a huge search space (16! {\approx} 2^{44} functions). The output of
such a search alone, counting only the space required to list Toffoli gates for
every function, would require over 100 terabytes of storage. In this paper, we
present two algorithms: one, that synthesizes an optimal circuit for any 4-bit
reversible specification, and another that synthesizes all optimal
implementations. We employ several techniques to make the problem tractable. We
report results from several experiments, including synthesis of all optimal
4-bit permutations, synthesis of random 4-bit permutations, optimal synthesis
of all 4-bit linear reversible circuits, synthesis of existing benchmark
functions; we compose a list of the hardest permutations to synthesize, and
show distribution of optimal circuits. We further illustrate that our proposed
approach may be extended to accommodate physical constraints via reporting
LNN-optimal reversible circuits. Our results have important implications in the
design and optimization of reversible and quantum circuits, testing circuit
synthesis heuristics, and performing experiments in the area of quantum
information processing.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1003.191
Heuristic Synthesis of Reversible Logic – A Comparative Study
Reversible logic circuits have been historically motivated by theoretical research in low-power, and recently attracted interest as components of the quantum algorithm, optical computing and nanotechnology. However due to the intrinsic property of reversible logic, traditional irreversible logic design and synthesis methods cannot be carried out. Thus a new set of algorithms are developed correctly to synthesize reversible logic circuit. This paper presents a comprehensive literature review with comparative study on heuristic based reversible logic synthesis. It reviews a range of heuristic based reversible logic synthesis techniques reported by researchers (BDD-based, cycle-based, search-based, non-search-based, rule-based, transformation-based, and ESOP-based). All techniques are described in detail and summarized in a table based on their features, limitation, library used and their consideration metric. Benchmark comparison of gate count and quantum cost are analysed for each synthesis technique. Comparing the synthesis algorithm outputs over the years, it can be observed that different approach has been used for the synthesis of reversible circuit. However, the improvements are not significant. Quantum cost and gate count has improved over the years, but arguments and debates are still on certain issues such as the issue of garbage outputs that remain the same. This paper provides the information of all heuristic based synthesis of reversible logic method proposed over the years. All techniques are explained in detail and thus informative for new reversible logic researchers and bridging the knowledge gap in this area
The Kinetic Basis of Self-Organized Pattern Formation
In his seminal paper on morphogenesis (1952), Alan Turing demonstrated that
different spatio-temporal patterns can arise due to instability of the
homogeneous state in reaction-diffusion systems, but at least two species are
necessary to produce even the simplest stationary patterns. This paper is aimed
to propose a novel model of the analog (continuous state) kinetic automaton and
to show that stationary and dynamic patterns can arise in one-component
networks of kinetic automata. Possible applicability of kinetic networks to
modeling of real-world phenomena is also discussed.Comment: 8 pages, submitted to the 14th International Conference on the
