Learning Design and Service Oriented Architectures:a mutual dependency?
This paper looks at how the concept of reusability has gained currency in e-learning. Initial attention was focused on reuse of content, but recently attention has focused on reusable software tools and reusable activity structures. The former has led to the proposal of service-oriented architectures, and the latter has seen the development of the Learning Design specification. The authors suggest that there is a mutual dependency between the success of these two approaches, as complex Learning Designs require the ability to call on a range of tools, while remaining technology neutral.
The paper describes a project at the UK Open University, SLeD, which sought to develop a Learning Design player that would utilise the service-oriented approach. This acted both as a means of exploring some of the issues implicit within both approaches and also provided a practical tool. The SLeD system was successfully implemented in a different university, Liverpool Hope, demonstrating some of the principles of re-use
The Joint COntrols Project Framework
The Framework is one of the subprojects of the Joint COntrols Project (JCOP),
which is collaboration between the four LHC experiments and CERN. By sharing
development, this will reduce the overall effort required to build and maintain
the experiment control systems. As such, the main aim of the Framework is to
deliver a common set of software components, tools and guidelines that can be
used by the four LHC experiments to build their control systems. Although
commercial components are used wherever possible, further added value is
obtained by customisation for HEP-specific applications. The supervisory layer
of the Framework is based on the SCADA tool PVSS, which was selected after a
detailed evaluation. This is integrated with the front-end layer via both OPC
(OLE for Process Control), an industrial standard, and the CERN-developed DIM
(Distributed Information Management System) protocol. Several components are
already in production and being used by running fixed-target experiments at
CERN as well as for the LHC experiment test beams. The paper will give an
overview of the key concepts behind the project as well as the state of the

FRAMEWORK FOR FLEXIBLE REUSE AND ASSEMBLY OF LEARNING OBJECTS – A PILOT PROJECT

Linked Data based video annotation and browsing for distance learning
We present a pair of prototype tools that enable users to mark up video with annotations and later explore related materials using Semantic Web and Linked Data approaches. The �first tool helps academics preparing Open University course materials to mark up videos with information about the subject matter and audio-visual content. The second tool enables users, such as students or academics, to find video and other materials relevant to their study

IRS III: a platform and infrastructure for creating WSMO based semantic web services
The IRS project has the overall aim of supporting the automated or semi-automated construction of semantically enhanced systems over the inter-net. IRS-I supported the creation of knowledge intensive systems structured acording to the UPML framework and IRS-II integrated the UPML framework with web service technologies. In this paper we describe IRS-III. Within IRS-III we have now incorporated and extended the WSMO ontology. Our extensions to WSMO include the addition of input and output roles to goals and web services and a new type of mediator. As well as summarizing our additions to WSMO we outline the architecture of IRS-III and the associated interfaces

A computer-based product classification and component detection for demanufacturing processes

http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/0951192X.2011.579169.The aim of this paper is to propose a novel computer-based product classification, component detection and tracking for demanufacturing and disassembly process. This is achieved by introducing a series of automated and sequential product scanning, component identification, image analysis and sorting – leading to the development of a bill of material (BOM). The produced BOM can then be associated with the relevant disassembly/demanufacture proviso. The proposed integrated image sorting and product classification (ISPC) approach can be considered as a step forward in automation of demanufacturing activities. The ISPC model proposed in this paper utilises and builds on the state-of-the-art technology and current body of research in computer-integrated demanufacturing and remanufacturing (CIDR). An appraisal of the latest research material and the factors that inhibit CIDR methods inpractice are presented. A novel solution for the integration of imaging and material identification techniques toovercome some of the existing shortcomings of automated recycling processes is proposed in this paper. The proposed product scanning and component detection ISPC software consists of four distinct models: the repertory database, the search engine, the product-attributes updater and the image sorting and classification algorithm. The software framework that integrates the four components is presented in this paper.
