Teaching Concurrent Software Design: A Case Study Using Android
In this article, we explore various parallel and distributed computing topics
from a user-centric software engineering perspective. Specifically, in the
context of mobile application development, we study the basic building blocks
of interactive applications in the form of events, timers, and asynchronous
activities, along with related software modeling, architecture, and design
topics.Comment: Submitted to CDER NSF/IEEE-TCPP Curriculum Initiative on Parallel and

Minimum-weight triangulation is NP-hard
A triangulation of a planar point set S is a maximal plane straight-line
graph with vertex set S. In the minimum-weight triangulation (MWT) problem, we
are looking for a triangulation of a given point set that minimizes the sum of
the edge lengths. We prove that the decision version of this problem is
NP-hard. We use a reduction from PLANAR-1-IN-3-SAT. The correct working of the
gadgets is established with computer assistance, using dynamic programming on
polygonal faces, as well as the beta-skeleton heuristic to certify that certain
edges belong to the minimum-weight triangulation.Comment: 45 pages (including a technical appendix of 13 pages), 28 figures.

A DAQ System for Linear Collider TPC Prototypes based on the ALEPH TPC Electronics
Within the international studies of a high energy linear electron positron
collider, several groups are developing and testing prototypes for a Linear
Collider TPC. This detector is planned to be used as a central part in the
tracking system of a detector at such a machine. In this note we describe a DAQ
system, which has been developed for the use in tests of TPC prototypes. It is
based on electronics used at the ALEPH experiment at CERN.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
