Feasibility Study of Ubiquitous Interaction Concepts
AbstractThere are all sorts of consumer electronics in a home environment. Using âappsâ to interact with each device is neither feasible nor practical in an ubicomp future. Prototyping and evaluating interaction concepts for this future is a challenge. This paper proposes four concepts for device discovery and device interaction implemented in a virtual environment. The interaction concepts were compared in a controlled experiment for evaluation and comparison. Some statistically significant differences and subjective preferences could be observed in the quantitative and qualitative data respectively.Overall, the results indicate that the proposed interaction concepts were found natural and easy to use
Towards virtual communities on the Web: Actors and audience
We report about ongoing research in a virtual
reality environment where visitors can interact with
agents that help them to obtain information, to perform
certain transactions and to collaborate with them in order
to get some tasks done. Our environment models a
theatre in our hometown. We discuss attempts to let this
environment evolve into a theatre community where we
do not only have goal-directed visitors, but also visitors
that that are not sure whether they want to buy or just
want information or visitors who just want to look
around. It is shown that we need a multi-user and multiagent
environment to realize our goals. Since our environment
models a theatre it is also interesting to investigate
the roles of performers and audience in this environment.
For that reason we discuss capabilities and personalities of agents. Some notes on the historical development of networked communities are included
Ubiquitous Computing in a Home Environment, Controlling Consumer Electronics
Building interaction prototypes for ubiquitous computing is inherently difficult, since it involves a number of different devices and systems. Prototyping is an important step in developing and evaluating interaction concepts. The ideal prototyping methodology should offer high fidelity at a relatively low cost. This thesis describes the development of interaction concepts for controlling consumer electronics in a ubiquitous computing home environment, as well as the setup, based on immersive virtual reality, used to develop and evaluate the interaction concepts. Off-the-shelf input/output devices and a game engine are used for developing two concepts for device discovery and two concepts for device interaction. The interaction concepts are compared in a controlled experiment in order to evaluate the concepts as well as the virtual reality setup. Statistically significant differences and subjective preferences could be observed in the quantitative and qualitative data respectively. Overall, the results suggest that the interaction concepts could be acceptable to some users for some use cases and that the virtual reality setup offers the possibility to quickly build interaction concepts which can be evaluated and compared in a controlled experiment
Internet of things: why we are not there yet
Twenty-one years past since Weiserâs vision of ubiquitous computing (UbiComp) has
been written, and it is yet to be fully fulfilled despite of almost all the needed technologies
already available. Still, the widespread interest in UbiComp and the results in some of its fields
pose a question: why we are not there yet? It seems we miss the âoctopusâ head. In this paper,
we will try to depict the reasons why we are not there yet, from three different points of view:
interaction media, device integration and applications
The Application of Patent Mining in the Forecast of Smart Home Industry
With the rapid development of the Internet, the Internet of things and the intelligent terminals, Smart Home has caused the great attention. This paper applies data mining method into patent analysis, and creates a visual-based patent mining analytical framework. We carry on the statistical analysis of the invention patents of Smart Home in China, and point out the development of smart home-related products and technologies, the main patent applicant and the corresponding type. Besides, we find out the technology hot spots and patent vacancies of Smart Home through Patent Network and Patent Map, to provide reference for the related research field
