    Sustainable seabed mining: guidelines and a new concept for Atlantis II Deep

    The feasibility of exploiting seabed resources is subject to the engineering solutions, and economic prospects. Due to rising metal prices, predicted mineral scarcities and unequal allocations of resources in the world, vast research programmes on the exploration and exploitation of seabed minerals are presented in 1970s. Very few studies have been published after the 1980s, when predictions were not fulfilled. The attention grew back in the last decade with marine mineral mining being in research and commercial focus again and the first seabed mining license for massive sulphides being granted in Papua New Guinea’s Exclusive Economic Zone.Research on seabed exploitation and seabed mining is a complex transdisciplinary field that demands for further attention and development. Since the field links engineering, economics, environmental, legal and supply chain research, it demands for research from a systems point of view. This implies the application of a holistic sustainability framework of to analyse the feasibility of engineering systems. The research at hand aims to close this gap by developing such a framework and providing a review of seabed resources. Based on this review it identifies a significant potential for massive sulphides in inactive hydrothermal vents and sediments to solve global resource scarcities. The research aims to provide background on seabed exploitation and to apply a holistic systems engineering approach to develop general guidelines for sustainable seabed mining of polymetallic sulphides and a new concept and solutions for the Atlantis II Deep deposit in the Red Sea.The research methodology will start with acquiring a broader academic and industrial view on sustainable seabed mining through an online survey and expert interviews on seabed mining. In addition, the Nautilus Minerals case is reviewed for lessons learned and identification of challenges. Thereafter, a new concept for Atlantis II Deep is developed that based on a site specific assessment.The research undertaken in this study provides a new perspective regarding sustainable seabed mining. The main contributions of this research are the development of extensive guidelines for key issues in sustainable seabed mining as well as a new concept for seabed mining involving engineering systems, environmental risk mitigation, economic feasibility, logistics and legal aspects

    Driven by ambitious technological developments in automation, statistical figures illustrating that up to ninety per cent of maritime accidents are caused directly or indirectly by Human Element and last but not least by the aspiration to make shipping cos-effective, there are numerous ongoing research and technological developments to realize unmanned ships. In the light of those recent developments this dissertation studies if there is a necessity for changes of existing conventions when introducing unmanned ships into the current maritime transportation system. ’Unmanned ships’ is new trend and there are a lot of ongoing projects. However, there are still many topics to be solved. Among others, the dissertation focuses on survey schemes especially in respect to regulations of SOLAS Chapter V. Firstly, for the studies a clarifying definition of unmanned ships is developed through literature survey. A selection of recent projects dealing with unmanned ships is summarized and explained to understand the current situation of unmanned ships. Challenges and problems are identified for three sectors: technical, administrative/regulatory and operational. Secondly, the existing survey scheme is studied and challenges are identified through case studies. In particular, flag state survey, interval of surveys and PSC are analysed and potential solutions and approaches to overcome are developed and discussed. Thirdly, the applicability of SOLAS Chapter V regulations is considered and challenges are identified using specific scenario studies. Especially, definition of master, officer and crew, requirement of minimum manning and pilot services are discussed and potential solutions are drafted and explained. Lastly, conclusion of the dissertation is provided and recommendations for technology, legislation and operational aspects are given

Lethal Autonomy provides constrained military/security forces with a viable option, but only if implementation has got proper empirically supported foundations. Autonomous weapon systems can be designed and developed to conduct ground, air and naval operations.     Deliverable 1.4 is aimed at identification of existing and operable observing systems and sensors which are relevant to COMMON SENSE objectives. Report aggregates information on existing observing initiatives, programmes, systems, platforms and sensors. The Report includes: • inventory of previous and current EU funded projects. Some of the them, even if started before 2007, were aimed at activities which are relevant or in line with those stemming from MSFD in 2008. The ‘granulation’ of the contents and objectives of the projects varies from sensors development through observation methodologies to monitoring strategies, • inventory of research infrastructure in Europe. It starts from an attempt to define of Marine Research Infrastructure, as there is not a single definition of Research Infrastructure (RI) or of Marine Research Infrastructure (MRI), and there are different ways to categorise them. The chapter gives the categorization of the MRI, together with detailed description and examples of MRI – research platforms, marine data systems, research sites and laboratories with respect of four MSFD descriptors relevant to COMMON SENSE project, • two chapters on Research Programs and Infrastructure Networks; the pan-European initiatives aimed at cooperation and efficient use of infrastructural resources for marine observation and monitoring and data exchange are analysed. The detailed description of observing sensors and system are presented as well as frameworks for cooperation, • information on platforms (research vessels) available to the Project for testing developed sensors and systems. Platforms are available and operating in all three regions of interest to the project (Mediterranean, North Sea, Baltic), • annexed detailed description of two world-wide observation networks and systems. These systems are excellent examples of added value offered by integrated systems of ocean observation (from data to knowledge) and how they work in practice. Report concludes that it is seen a shortage of new classes of sensors to fulfil the emerging monitoring needs. Sensors proposed to be developed by COMMON SENSE project shall answer to the needs stemmed from introduction of MSFD and GES descriptors

    Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Communication Networks for the Maritime Internet of Things: Key Technologies, Opportunities, and Challenges

    With the rapid development of marine activities, there has been an increasing number of maritime mobile terminals, as well as a growing demand for high-speed and ultra-reliable maritime communications to keep them connected. Traditionally, the maritime Internet of Things (IoT) is enabled by maritime satellites. However, satellites are seriously restricted by their high latency and relatively low data rate. As an alternative, shore & island-based base stations (BSs) can be built to extend the coverage of terrestrial networks using fourth-generation (4G), fifth-generation (5G), and beyond 5G services. Unmanned aerial vehicles can also be exploited to serve as aerial maritime BSs. Despite of all these approaches, there are still open issues for an efficient maritime communication network (MCN). For example, due to the complicated electromagnetic propagation environment, the limited geometrically available BS sites, and rigorous service demands from mission-critical applications, conventional communication and networking theories and methods should be tailored for maritime scenarios. Towards this end, we provide a survey on the demand for maritime communications, the state-of-the-art MCNs, and key technologies for enhancing transmission efficiency, extending network coverage, and provisioning maritime-specific services. Future challenges in developing an environment-aware, service-driven, and integrated satellite-air-ground MCN to be smart enough to utilize external auxiliary information, e.g., sea state and atmosphere conditions, are also discussed

    MULTI-VESSELS COLLISION AVOIDANCE STRATEGY FOR AUTONOMOUS SURFACE VEHICLES BASED ON GENETIC ALGORITHM IN CONGESTED PORT ENVIRONMENT

    An improved genetic collision avoidance algorithm is proposed in this study to address the problem that Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASV) need to comply with the collision avoidance rules at sea in congested sea areas. Firstly, a collision risk index model for ASV safe encounters is established taking into account the international rules for collision avoidance. The ASV collision risk index and the distance of safe encounters are taken as boundary values of the correlation membership function of the collision risk index model to calculate the optimal heading of ASV in real-time. Secondly, the genetic coding, fitness function, and basic parameters of the genetic algorithm are designed to construct the collision avoidance decision system. Finally, the simulation of collision avoidance between ASV and several obstacle vessels is performed, including the simulation of three collision avoidance states head-on situation, crossing situation, and overtaking situation. The results show that the proposed intelligent genetic algorithm considering the rules of collision avoidance at sea can effectively avoid multiple other vessels in different situations
