Qualitative Properties of alpha-Weighted Scheduling Policies
We consider a switched network, a fairly general constrained queueing network
model that has been used successfully to model the detailed packet-level
dynamics in communication networks, such as input-queued switches and wireless
networks. The main operational issue in this model is that of deciding which
queues to serve, subject to certain constraints. In this paper, we study
qualitative performance properties of the well known -weighted
scheduling policies. The stability, in the sense of positive recurrence, of
these policies has been well understood. We establish exponential upper bounds
on the tail of the steady-state distribution of the backlog. Along the way, we
prove finiteness of the expected steady-state backlog when , a
property that was known only for . Finally, we analyze the
excursions of the maximum backlog over a finite time horizon for . As a consequence, for , we establish the full state space
collapse property.Comment: 13 page
Narrow Line Cooling and Momentum-Space Crystals
Narrow line laser cooling is advancing the frontier for experiments ranging
from studies of fundamental atomic physics to high precision optical frequency
standards. In this paper, we present an extensive description of the systems
and techniques necessary to realize 689 nm 1S0 - 3P1 narrow line cooling of
atomic 88Sr. Narrow line cooling and trapping dynamics are also studied in
detail. By controlling the relative size of the power broadened transition
linewidth and the single-photon recoil frequency shift, we show that it is
possible to continuously bridge the gap between semiclassical and quantum
mechanical cooling. Novel semiclassical cooling process, some of which are
intimately linked to gravity, are also explored. Moreover, for laser
frequencies tuned above the atomic resonance, we demonstrate momentum-space
crystals containing up to 26 well defined lattice points. Gravitationally
assisted cooling is also achieved with blue-detuned light. Theoretically, we
find the blue detuned dynamics are universal to Doppler limited systems. This
paper offers the most comprehensive study of narrow line laser cooling to date.Comment: 14 pages, 19 figure
Systematic Comparison of HF CMOS Transconductors
Transconductors are commonly used as active elements in high-frequency (HF) filters, amplifiers, mixers, and oscillators. This paper reviews transconductor design by focusing on the V-I kernel that determines the key transconductor properties. Based on bandwidth considerations, simple V-I kernels with few or no internal nodes are preferred. In a systematic way, virtually all simple kernels published in literature are generated. This is done in two steps: 1) basic 3-terminal transconductors are covered and 2) then five different techniques to combine two of them in a composite V-I kernel. In order to compare transconductors in a fair way, a normalized signal-to-noise ratio (NSNR) is defined. The basic V-I kernels and the five classes of composite V-I kernels are then compared, leading to insight in the key mechanisms that affect NSNR. Symbolic equations are derived to estimate NSNR, while simulations with more advanced MOSFET models verify the results. The results show a strong tradeoff between NSNR and transconductance tuning range. Resistively generated MOSFETs render the best NSNR results and are robust for future technology developments
