    Designing for Design Activity

    The area of graphic design has expanded since digital media was introduced, and it requires new creative thinking skills in the design process. This paper proposes a design process for a graphic design graduate class using activity theory as a theoretical background. This design process consists of three phases to solve the design problems within diverse design projects. Each phase was examined in terms of how the elements of activity theory could apply to the design process. As a research method, Engestrƶmā€™s activity system model was adapted and explored in the design processes.     Transcribing Content from Structural Images with Spotlight Mechanism

    Transcribing content from structural images, e.g., writing notes from music scores, is a challenging task as not only the content objects should be recognized, but the internal structure should also be preserved. Existing image recognition methods mainly work on images with simple content (e.g., text lines with characters), but are not capable to identify ones with more complex content (e.g., structured symbols), which often follow a fine-grained grammar. To this end, in this paper, we propose a hierarchical Spotlight Transcribing Network (STN) framework followed by a two-stage "where-to-what" solution. Specifically, we first decide "where-to-look" through a novel spotlight mechanism to focus on different areas of the original image following its structure. Then, we decide "what-to-write" by developing a GRU based network with the spotlight areas for transcribing the content accordingly. Moreover, we propose two implementations on the basis of STN, i.e., STNM and STNR, where the spotlight movement follows the Markov property and Recurrent modeling, respectively. We also design a reinforcement method to refine the framework by self-improving the spotlight mechanism. We conduct extensive experiments on many structural image datasets, where the results clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of STN framework.Comment: Accepted by KDD2018 Research Track.     Model based safety analysis for an Unmanned Aerial System

    This paper aims at describing safety architectures of autonomous systems by using Event-B formal method. The autonomous systems combine various activities which can be organised in layers. The Event-B formalism well supports the rigorous design of this kind of systems. Its refinement mechanism allows a progressive modelling by checking the correctness and the relevance of the models by discharging proof obligations. The application of the Event-B method within the framework of layered architecture specification enables the emergence of desired global properties with relation to layer interactions. The safety objectives are derived in each layer and they involve static and dynamic properties such as an independence property, a redundant property or a sequential property. The originality of our approach is to consider a refinement process between two layers in which the abstract model is the model of the lower layer. In our modelling, we distinguish nominal behaviour and abnormal behaviour in order to well establish failure propagation in our architecture

    Intellectual Capital Architectures and Bilateral Learning: A Framework For Human Resource Management

    Both researchers and managers are increasingly interested in how firms can pursue bilateral learning; that is, simultaneously exploring new knowledge domains while exploiting current ones (cf., March, 1991). To address this issue, this paper introduces a framework of intellectual capital architectures that combine unique configurations of human, social, and organizational capital. These architectures support bilateral learning by helping to create supplementary alignment between human and social capital as well as complementary alignment between people-embodied knowledge (human and social capital) and organization-embodied knowledge (organizational capital). In order to establish the context for bilateral learning, the framework also identifies unique sets of HR practices that may influence the combinations of human, social, and organizational capital

    Designinig Coordination among Human and Software Agents

    The goal of this paper is to propose a new methodology for designing coordination between human angents and software agents and, ultimately, among software agents. The methodology is based on two key ideas. The first is that coordination should be designed in steps, according to a precise software engineering methodology, and starting from the specification of early requirements. The second is that coordination should be modeled as dependency between actors. Two actors may depend on one another because they want to achieve goals, acquire resources or execute a plan. The methodology used is based on Tropos, an agent oriented software engineering methodology presented in earlier papers. The methodology is presented with the help of a case study
