Revolution Beyond the Event
Revolution Beyond the Event brings together leading international anthropologists alongside emerging scholars to examine revolutionary legacies from the MENA region, Latin America and the Caribbean. It explores the idea that revolutions have varied afterlives that complicate the assumptions about their duration, pace and progression, and argues that a renewed focus on the temporality of radical politics is essential to our understanding of revolution. Approaching revolution through its relationship to time, the book is a critical intervention into attempts to define revolutions as bounded events that act as sequential transitions from one political system to another. It pursues an ethnographically driven rethinking of the temporal horizons that are at stake in revolutionary processes, arguing that linear views of revolution are inextricably tied to notions of progress and modernity. Through a careful selection of case studies, the book provides a critical perspective on the lived realities of revolutionary afterlives, challenging the liberal humanist assumptions implicit in the ‘modern’ idea of revolution, and reappraising the political agency of people caught up in revolutionary situations across a variety of ethnographic contexts
Gratitude in Healthcare an interdisciplinary inquiry
The expression and reception of gratitude is a significant dimension of interpersonal communication in care-giving relationships. Although there is a growing body of evidence that practising gratitude has health and wellbeing benefits for the giver and receiver, gratitude as a social emotion made in interaction has received comparatively little research attention. To address this gap, this thesis draws on a portfolio of qualitative methods to explore the ways in which gratitude is constituted in care provision in personal, professional, and public discourse. This research is informed by a discursive psychology approach in which gratitude is analysed, not as a morally virtuous character trait, but as a purposeful, performative social action that is mutually co-constructed in interaction.I investigate gratitude through studies that approach it on a meta, meso, macro, and micro level. Key intellectual traditions that underpin research literature on gratitude in healthcare are explored through a metanarrative review. Six underlying metanarratives were identified: social capital; gifts; care ethics; benefits of gratitude; staff wellbeing; and gratitude as an indicator of quality of care. At the meso (institutional) level, a narrative analysis of an archive of letters between patients treated for tuberculosis and hospital almoners positions gratitude as participating in a Maussian gift-exchange ritual in which communal ties are created and consolidated.At the macro (societal) level, a discursive analysis of tweets of gratitude to the National Health Service at the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic shows that attitudes to gratitude were dynamic in response to events, with growing unease about deflecting attention from risk reduction for those working in the health and social care sectors. A follow-up analysis of the clap-for-carers movement implicates gratitude in embodied, symbolic, and imagined performances in debates about care justice. At the micro (interpersonal) level, an analysis of gratitude encounters broadcast in the BBC documentary series, Hospital, uses pragmatics and conversation analysis to argue that gratitude is an emotion made in talk, with the uptake of gratitude opportunities influencing the course of conversational sequencing. The findings challenge the oftenmade distinction between task-oriented and relational conversation in healthcare.Moral economics are paradigmatic in the philosophical conceptualisation of gratitude. My research shows that, although balance-sheet reciprocity characterised the institutional culture of the voluntary hospital, it is hardly ever a feature ofinterpersonal gratitude encounters. Instead, gratitude is accomplished as shared moments of humanity through negotiated encounters infused with affect. Gratitude should never be instrumentalised as compensating for unsafe, inadequatelyrenumerated work. Neither should its potential to enhance healthcare encounters be underestimated. Attention to gratitude can participate in culture change by affirming modes of acting, emoting, relating, expressing, and connecting that intersect with care justice.This thesis speaks to gratitude as a culturally salient indicator of what people express as worthy of appreciation. It calls for these expressions to be more closely attended to, not only as useful feedback that can inform change, but also because gratitude is a resource on which we can draw to enhance and enrich healthcare as a communal, collaborative, cooperative endeavour
Facilitating prosociality through technology: Design to promote digital volunteerism
Volunteerism covers many activities involving no financial rewards for volunteers but which contribute
to the common good. There is existing work in designing technology for volunteerism in HumanComputer Interaction (HCI) and related disciplines that focuses on motivation to improve
performance, but it does not account for volunteer wellbeing. Here, I investigate digital volunteerism
in three case studies with a focus on volunteer motivation, engagement, and wellbeing. My research
involved volunteers and others in the volunteering context to generate recommendations for a
volunteer-centric design for digital volunteerism. The thesis has three aims:
1. To investigate motivational aspects critical for enhancing digital volunteers’ experiences
2. To identify digital platform attributes linked to volunteer wellbeing
3. To create guidelines for effectively supporting volunteer engagement in digital volunteering
platforms
In the first case study I investigate the design of a chat widget for volunteers working in an
organisation with a view to develop a design that improves their workflow and wellbeing. The second
case study investigates the needs, motivations, and wellbeing of volunteers who help medical
students improve their medical communication skills. An initial mixed-methods study was followed by
an experiment comparing two design strategies to improve volunteer relatedness; an important
indicator of wellbeing. The third case study looks into volunteer needs, experiences, motivations, and
wellbeing with a focus on volunteer identity and meaning-making on a science-based research
platform. I then analyse my findings from these case studies using the lens of care ethics to derive
critical insights for design.
The key contributions of this thesis are design strategies and critical insights, and a volunteer-centric
design framework to enhance the motivation, wellbeing and engagement of digital volunteers

Children feature centrally in the ubiquitous narratives of ‘migration crises’. They are often depicted as essentially vulnerable and in need of special protections, or suspiciously adult-like and a threat to national borders. At the same time, many voices, experiences, and stories are rarely heard, especially about children on the move within the global South. This bilingual book, written in English and Spanish, challenges simplistic narratives to enrich perspectives and understanding. Drawing on collaborations between young (im)migrants, researchers, artists and activists, this collection asks new questions about how crises are produced, mobility is controlled, and childhood is conceptualised. Answers to these questions have profound implications for resources, infrastructures, and relationships of care. Authors offer insights from diverse global contexts, painting a rich and insightful tapestry about childhood (im)mobility. They stress that children are more than recipients of care and that the crises they face are multiple and stratifying, with long historical roots. Readers are invited to understand migration as an act of concern and love, and to attend to how the solidarities between citizens and ‘others’, adults and children, and between children, are understood and forged.La niñez ocupa un lugar central en las narrativas omnipresentes de las ""crisis migratorias"". A menudo ésta es representada como esencialmente vulnerable y necesitada de protección especial, como sospechosamente parecida a los adultos, o como una amenaza para las fronteras nacionales. A Taxonomy of Freehand Grasping Patterns in Virtual Reality
Grasping is the most natural and primary interaction paradigm people perform every day, which allows us to pick up and manipulate objects around us such as drinking a cup of coffee or writing with a pen. Grasping has been highly explored in real environments, to understand and structure the way people grasp and interact with objects by presenting categories, models and theories for grasping approach. Due to the complexity of the human hand, classifying grasping knowledge to provide meaningful insights is a challenging task, which led to researchers developing grasp taxonomies to provide guidelines for emerging grasping work (such as in anthropology, robotics and hand surgery) in a systematic way.
While this body of work exists for real grasping, the nuances of grasping transfer in virtual environments is unexplored. The emerging development of robust hand tracking sensors for virtual devices now allow the development of grasp models that enable VR to simulate real grasping interactions. However, present work has not yet explored the differences and nuances that are present in virtual grasping compared to real object grasping, which means that virtual systems that create grasping models based on real grasping knowledge, might make assumptions which are yet to be proven true or untrue around the way users intuitively grasp and interact with virtual objects.
To address this, this thesis presents the first user elicitation studies to explore grasping patterns directly in VR. The first study presents main similarities and differences between real and virtual object grasping, the second study furthers this by exploring how virtual object shape influences grasping patterns, the third study focuses on visual thermal cues and how this influences grasp metrics, and the fourth study focuses on understanding other object characteristics such as stability and complexity and how they influence grasps in VR. To provide structured insights on grasping interactions in VR, the results are synthesized in the first VR Taxonomy of Grasp Types, developed following current methods for developing grasping and HCI taxonomies and re-iterated to
present an updated and more complete taxonomy.
Results show that users appear to mimic real grasping behaviour in VR, however they also illustrate that users present issues around object size estimation and generally a lower variability in grasp types is used. The taxonomy shows that only five grasps account for the majority of grasp data in VR, which can be used for computer systems aiming to achieve natural and intuitive interactions at lower computational cost. Further, findings show that virtual object characteristics such as shape, stability and complexity as well as visual cues for temperature influence grasp metrics such as aperture, category, type, location and dimension. These changes in grasping patterns together with virtual object categorisation methods can be used to inform design decisions when developing intuitive interactions and virtual objects and environments and therefore taking a step forward in achieving natural grasping interaction in VR
Breastfeeding, motherhood and employment: the experience of breastfeeding mothers returning to work in Qatar
Participation of women in employment in Qatar has increased significantly over the past
10 years, from 12.4% in 2011 to 37% in 2020, with 64.1% of working women also being
married (Planning and Statistics Authority, Qatar). Their professional commitments
notwithstanding, most of these women are also mothers, with many breastfeeding. The Quran
demands that mothers breastfeed their children for the first two years of their lives. This thesis
explores this tension between a rapid increase in mothers entering the labour market, and the
specific historic, cultural and religious expectations upon mothers in Qatar, which create
challenges for mothers, employers and policy makers that are different from those of working
mothers in the Global North and need further consideration.
This thesis employed a qualitative research methodology in which a total of 50
breastfeeding, professional, working mothers in the public and private sectors of Qatar were
interviewed. The thesis adopts a multifaceted theoretical framing. First, matricentric feminism
(O’Reilly, 2016) and Hay’s concept of intensive mothering are considered in terms of their
applicability, and expanded upon in seeking to make sense of the tensions and challenges the
women experienced as they returned to work following birth and a relatively short maternity
leave of only 50 and 60 days, in the private and public sectors respectively, within this particular
context in the Global South. Second, the theory of the gendered institution, as proposed by
Acker in 1990, posits that breastfeeding mothers cannot embody the ‘ideal worker’ construct
due to considerations such as the roles they can handle, interpersonal interactions, self-efficacy,
and culture. Third, under maternal bodies at work theory by Gatrell, Cooper and Kossek's
(2017), breastfeeding mothers are perceived as social pollutants. According to this theory,
women's experiences are influenced by the perspective that maternal bodies belong in the
private sphere and that their presence in the workplace is repugnant to other workers. Finally,
the experiences of breastfeeding women are analysed from the perspective of their
embeddedness in multiple layers of contexts, in line with the theorisation of Lewis and Den
Dulk (2008). There are four layers of contexts taken into account the global, national/regional
and institutional layers. Under this theoretical position, the thesis appreciates the reality that
different factors interact to produce magnified or suppressed effects. Through the lens of this
multifaceted theoretical framework, the findings from the interviews are analysed through
thematic analysis.This thesis therefore significantly contributes to the literature on working
mothers through its location in an Islamic country, and through its orientation and exploration
of the significance of the religious context at the intersection of gender and employment in
particular, which remains underexplored.
The findings show how the mothers’ return to work is complicated by the ways in which
employment policies on pregnancy, maternity and breastfeeding are not aligned with Islamic
doctrine on what is expected of women seeking to conform to ideas of being a ‘good Muslim
mother’ In line with matricentric feminism, the findings show that Qatari women have
displayed increased propensity to seek opportunities under professional employment as a way
of advancing their interests as women and mothers, while also taking care of their families. The
participation of women in the workplace has magnified the effects of intensive mothering,
whereby women are expected to pursue professional acheivements in the workplace, while also
being a good mother in accordance with the guidelines by Islam. These guidelines impose two
years breastfeeding period after the birth of a baby, in addition to other domestic
responsibilities. However, the novel work-related responsibilities have made fulfilling this
mandate challenging for these women. The limitations arise from circumstances that can be
explained through elements of the gendered organisation since most workplaces are not set up
to facilitate breastfeeding. Similarly, women are found not to fit the ‘ideal worker’ image, thus
limiting the extent to which they can exercise agency. It is also apparent from the resrach
findings that the maternal body of the Qatari breastfeeding women in the study is perceived as
a pollutant and repugnant in most workplaces and public spaces. While providing breastfeeding
facilities in the workplace and accommodating breastfeeding activities could solve some of
these challenges, most of the workplaces where the women interviewed work have not taken
such measures. Finally, there is evidence that most breastfeeding mothers' experiences can be
linked to multiple factors based on layers of contexts, starting with the global, national/regional
and finally at the institutional level. The effects of the failure by Qatar to ratify the Maternity
Protection Convention, 2000 (No. 183) has played a role in subsequent actions such as the
provision of insufficient leave days. Furthermore, institutions have not been mandated to
accommodate the interests of breastfeeding mothers by providing the necessary facilities, such
as private rooms for breastfeeding or for the expression of milk. These circumstances function
to cause and magnify the challenges that breastfeeding mothers experience in practice upon
their return to work. It also highlights the different ways they sought to overcome these
challenges. It highlights how women in Qatar find themselves in a situation in which they are
compelled to adhere to religious guidelines and organisational policies that are in conflict with
each other.
The implications of these findings for theory, policy and practice are explored from a
feminist perspective in the final discussion and conclusion. The proposal for policy changes
focus on adjustments to the limited maternal leave days to provide breastfeeding mothers with
more time to take care of the infant. Changes to Human Rresources policies in the workplace
such as job-sharing can also provide stop-gap measures to accommodate the interests of
breastfeeding mothers. For practice, it is necessary for a multi-stakeholders and multi-sector
approach to developing solutions to the challenges that contribute to the negative experiences
of Qatari mothers who breastfeed at work

Doing Diversity in Museums and Heritage
The museum and heritage sector has been shaken by debates over how to address colonialism, migration, Islamophobia, LGBTI+ and multiple other forms of difference. This major multi-researcher ethnography of museums and heritage in Berlin provides new insight into how ›diversity‹ is understood and put into action in museums and heritage. Exploring new initiatives and approaches, the book shows how these work - or do not - in practice. By doing so, it highlights ways forward - for research and action - for the future. The fieldwork locations on which this book is based include the Humboldt Forum, the Museum of Islamic Art, the Museum für Naturkunde, and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, as well as Berlin streets and protests
