Ontology and Formal Semantics - Integration Overdue
In this note we suggest that difficulties encountered in natural language semantics are, for the most part, due to the use of mere symbol manipulation systems that are devoid of any content. In such systems, where there is hardly any link with our common-sense view of the world, and it is quite difficult to envision how one can formally account for the considerable amount of content that is often implicit, but almost never explicitly stated in our everyday discourse. \ud
The solution, in our opinion, is a compositional semantics grounded in an ontology that reflects our commonsense view of the world and the way we talk about it in ordinary language. In the compositional logic we envision there are ontological (or first-intension) concepts, and logical (or second-intension) concepts, and where the ontological concepts include not only Davidsonian events, but other abstract objects as well (e.g., states, processes, properties, activities, attributes, etc.) \ud
It will be demonstrated here that in such a framework, a number of challenges in the semantics of natural language (e.g., metonymy, intensionality, metaphor, etc.) can be properly and uniformly addressed.\u
A Survey on Semantic Processing Techniques
Semantic processing is a fundamental research domain in computational
linguistics. In the era of powerful pre-trained language models and large
language models, the advancement of research in this domain appears to be
decelerating. However, the study of semantics is multi-dimensional in
linguistics. The research depth and breadth of computational semantic
processing can be largely improved with new technologies. In this survey, we
analyzed five semantic processing tasks, e.g., word sense disambiguation,
anaphora resolution, named entity recognition, concept extraction, and
subjectivity detection. We study relevant theoretical research in these fields,
advanced methods, and downstream applications. We connect the surveyed tasks
with downstream applications because this may inspire future scholars to fuse
these low-level semantic processing tasks with high-level natural language
processing tasks. The review of theoretical research may also inspire new tasks
and technologies in the semantic processing domain. Finally, we compare the
different semantic processing techniques and summarize their technical trends,

Deep Emotion Recognition in Textual Conversations: A Survey
While Emotion Recognition in Conversations (ERC) has seen a tremendous
advancement in the last few years, new applications and implementation
scenarios present novel challenges and opportunities. These range from
leveraging the conversational context, speaker and emotion dynamics modelling,
to interpreting common sense expressions, informal language and sarcasm,
addressing challenges of real time ERC, recognizing emotion causes, different
taxonomies across datasets, multilingual ERC to interpretability. This survey
starts by introducing ERC, elaborating on the challenges and opportunities
pertaining to this task. It proceeds with a description of the emotion
taxonomies and a variety of ERC benchmark datasets employing such taxonomies.
This is followed by descriptions of the most prominent works in ERC with
explanations of the Deep Learning architectures employed. Then, it provides
advisable ERC practices towards better frameworks, elaborating on methods to
deal with subjectivity in annotations and modelling and methods to deal with
the typically unbalanced ERC datasets. Finally, it presents systematic review
tables comparing several works regarding the methods used and their
performance. The survey highlights the advantage of leveraging techniques to
address unbalanced data, the exploration of mixed emotions and the benefits of
incorporating annotation subjectivity in the learning phase
From Introspection to Essence: The Auditory Nature of Inner Speech
To some it is a shallow platitude that inner speech always has an auditory-phonological component. To others, it is an empirical hypothesis with accumulating support. To yet others it is a false dogma. In this chapter, I defend the claim that inner speech always has an auditory-phonological component, confining the claim to adults with ordinary speech and hearing. It is one thing, I emphasize, to assert that inner speech often, or even typically, has an auditory-phonological component—quite another to propose that it always does. When forced to argue for the stronger point, we stand to make a number of interesting discoveries about inner speech itself, and about our means for discriminating it from other psycholinguistic phenomena. Establishing the stronger conclusion also provides new leverage on debates concerning how we should conceive of, diagnose, and explain auditory verbal hallucinations and “inserted thoughts” in schizophrenia
Common Sense Reasoning for Detection, Prevention, and Mitigation of Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying (harassment on social networks) is widely recognized as a serious social problem, especially for adolescents. It is as much a threat to the viability of online social networks for youth today as spam once was to email in the early days of the Internet. Current work to tackle this problem has involved social and psychological studies on its prevalence as well as its negative effects on adolescents. While true solutions rest on teaching youth to have healthy personal relationships, few have considered innovative design of social network software as a tool for mitigating this problem. Mitigating cyberbullying involves two key components: robust techniques for effective detection and reflective user interfaces that encourage users to reflect upon their behavior and their choices.
Spam filters have been successful by applying statistical approaches like Bayesian networks and hidden Markov models. They can, like Google’s GMail, aggregate human spam judgments because spam is sent nearly identically to many people. Bullying is more personalized, varied, and contextual. In this work, we present an approach for bullying detection based on state-of-the-art natural language processing and a common sense knowledge base, which permits recognition over a broad spectrum of topics in everyday life. We analyze a more narrow range of particular subject matter associated with bullying (e.g. appearance, intelligence, racial and ethnic slurs, social acceptance, and rejection), and construct BullySpace, a common sense knowledge base that encodes particular knowledge about bullying situations. We then perform joint reasoning with common sense knowledge about a wide range of everyday life topics. We analyze messages using our novel AnalogySpace common sense reasoning technique. We also take into account social network analysis and other factors. We evaluate the model on real-world instances that have been reported by users on Formspring, a social networking website that is popular with teenagers.
On the intervention side, we explore a set of reflective user-interaction paradigms with the goal of promoting empathy among social network participants. We propose an “air traffic control”-like dashboard, which alerts moderators to large-scale outbreaks that appear to be escalating or spreading and helps them prioritize the current deluge of user complaints. For potential victims, we provide educational material that informs them about how to cope with the situation, and connects them with emotional support from others. A user evaluation shows that in-context, targeted, and dynamic help during cyberbullying situations fosters end-user reflection that promotes better coping strategies
