    Advanced resource planning as decision support module to ERP.

    In this paper, we show that the planning and decision-support capabilities of the MPC (Manufacturing Planning and Control) system, which forms the core of any ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) package, may be substantively enhanced by including a Decision Support Module (DSM) as an add-on at the midterm planning level. This DSM, called Advanced Resource Planning (ARP), serves as parameter setting process as well as tool for improving the structure of the ERP system itself. The ultimate goal of the DSM is to yield realistic information both for scheduling, sales and marketing, strategic and operational decision making and suppliers and customers.

    In this paper, we show that the planning and decision support capabilities of the MPC (Manufacturing Planning and Control) system, which forms the core of any ERP package, may be greatly enhanced by including an Advanced Resource Planning (ARP) module as an add-on at the midterm planning level. This ARP module enables to estimate the impact of variability, complexity and dynamic system behavior on key planning parameters. As such, it yields realistic information both for short-term planning purposes and for reliable lead time quotations. We show how dynamic behavior impacts the operational performance of a manufacturing system, and discuss the framework for incorporating the ARP module into the ERP system.Planning; Operational performance; Performance; International; Science;

    Improving workforce scheduling of aircraft line maintenance at Sabena Technics.

    This paper presents our application of a visualization tool and optimization model based on mixed-integer linear programming to solve a workforce staffing and scheduling problem at Sabena Technics, a major aircraft maintenance company in Belgium. We used the software to generate many alternative, cost-efficient schedules and to analyze multiple scenarios. In several management meetings, takeholders evaluated the schedules and raised concerns. We subsequently changed the model to successfully address their concerns. The model has resulted in considerable savings and a more efficient use of human resources.Workforce staffing; Scheduling; Optimization; Visualization; Aircraft maintenance;

    Dynamic hybrid simulation of batch processes driven by a scheduling module

    Simulation is now a CAPE tool widely used by practicing engineers for process design and control. In particular, it allows various offline analyses to improve system performance such as productivity, energy efficiency, waste reduction, etc. In this framework, we have developed the dynamic hybrid simulation environment PrODHyS whose particularity is to provide general and reusable object-oriented components dedicated to the modeling of devices and operations found in chemical processes. Unlike continuous processes, the dynamic simulation of batch processes requires the execution of control recipes to achieve a set of production orders. For these reasons, PrODHyS is coupled to a scheduling module (ProSched) based on a MILP mathematical model in order to initialize various operational parameters and to ensure a proper completion of the simulation. This paper focuses on the procedure used to generate the simulation model corresponding to the realization of a scenario described through a particular scheduling
